Why does my Cockatiel not want to stay in his cage?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
I bought a young male Cockatiel about three weeks ago. He is very tame, he was hand reared, and he likes to be handled. He spends hours every day happily out of his cage on my shoulder. However, when it is time for me to put him in the cage he will run back and forth on his perch and whistle loudly until I let him out again. Why doesn’t he want to ever stay in his cage?

because he is bored in there and wants your attention try putting toys in and never take him out when he makes a scene, its only reinforcing bad behaviour, its hard but try to ignore it or leave the room.
Mine did the same thing as yours. I got my weiro last Monday and I feel like being a bird mom. Over the first four days I been spending many hours with her and when I put her back to the cage she be walking back and forth and whistle. She also wouldnt eat in her cage unless I let her out and bring her the food and water bowls. But the next day onwards I’d to go to work so I’d no choice but to leave her in her cage. I worked 3 days in a row and was gone for 10 hours each day. I only played with her before I went to work and when I came home before her bedtime.
Today I was home the whole day and I let her out the cage for an hour (5 times all up) then put her back in her cage. She didnt make a lot of noise or jump around in the cage. She also ate her food in the cage. I guess we should not spoil out birds too much and should ignore them when they’re trying to get it their way.
He enjoys being out of the cage and, like you probably would if you were put in a cage, gets very bored in the cage… Make the cage more fun for him, put treats in there that he likes, a bunch of toys that make cool sounds, and stuff that is fun to shred to pieces because cockatiels like that…
