What small animal should i get: rats, or birds….?

Category: Cockatiel Sounds

ok, well i am 18. i’d really like to get a small pet. i’ve done a lot of research on rats, cockatiels, and lovebirds. they all sound great. i just can’t decide which one i should get. i am leaning towards 2 rats more than anything…but my bedroom really isn’t a rat proof room. plus, i have a cat who is a killer. she kills wild mice all the time. of course if i got rats i’d keep my cat & the rats away from each other, but i don’t know. what should i get, rats, cockatiels, or lovebirds?

thanks :)

please for the love of animals do not get a cockatiel. You have a cat and they won’t get along. If you have a dog these two get along great. I have both and they are the best companions ever. They are the most loving and attention needing birds, if you don’t have time for this type of pet do not get it. especially if your not prepared for the music.

If you want a good companion with alot of personality get a cockatiel, cats and dogs dont matter just keep them away I have two cats and I haven’t had trouble. If you dont have time or aren’t looking for a close friend get a rat. Cockatiels are alot more fun =D

Personally I think diamond doves are a better starter bird. They are just as easy to care for if not easier than cockatiels or lovebirds and don’t have some of the personality and noise issues the other two have. Also if you’re not used to having bird sounds in your house their soft cooing is a lot easier to stand. I also have cats and have had my fair share of cats and birds getting to know each other and the doves always seemed to handle it much better than I though they would have, though I still don’t recommend testing fate and letting your cat get to curious with whatever pet you do choose. Your room will definitely have to be a cat free zone.
