What happens when a baby cockatiel comes out of the nest for the first time?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by Taylor iz my husband!!!: What happens when a baby cockatiel comes out of the nest for the first time?
When the babies first come out of the nest, do they land on a perch or fall to the ground? I also hear that as soon as the babies have fledged the parents will start teaching them to eat seed. Do the parents do this at the food container or on the bottom of the cage?
Thank You

They just fly off
usually they are very curious and will want to look around and eventually fly away.
At first, they start to pop their heads out of the nest to see whats going on. Then, gradually they start to come out until they finally stay outside all day and spend the night on the perch (and yes, they do perch). If they fall on the ground they’re not ready yet. I had one of those, he was the runt of the clutch
They probably copy the parents and learn where the food is, and they eat seeds although at the beginning, the parents might occassionally feed them.
Since they are fledged, they should come out properly, be able to fly and perch, etc. There is no reason why they should be at the bottom of the cage.
They usually fly up to a perch. Once in a while, you will have one that will fall to the ground. Then it will realizes that it can fly, and will then fly up to a perch.
As far as food, the parents will continue to feed it until they teach it where to find the food.
Most of the time, the parents will teach the fledged at the food container on what to eat.

mine usually fall to the bottom and scream a little, in the middle of the night, they are fine but a little scared.they do not sit on a perch right away, not strong enough yet. the father feeds them for awhile, they are about 4 weeks old at that time.i take my birds out of their cage all day, i put the babies where i put the food, on a table, the babies try to eat by them selves their beaks are not strong enough to bite the food, they follow their parents around and learn by watching them. i give them veggies, fruit, etc.i also have free standing perches in different parts of the room, they learn to fly and land by following their parents.
