What age should I mist water on a cockatiel? And what age should I put cuttlefish bone in its cage?

Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A

I got a 7 week cockatiel dont know if its male or female. It preens alot even on my finger, I was wondering if I should I mist it with water or is it too young and might catch a cold? Also is it alright to put a cuttlefish bone in its cage, or will it choke on it?

Yes, to both…it’s okay. What I do is take my tiel in the shower with me lol I even have a little perch he sits on, he loves it! My tiel was about 5 months when I got him and he ate cuttlefish at that age so he/she will be fine. If you would like to read more about parrots here is a site. I used to own several cockatiels and I never got them wet for any reason. I don’t see the need to do that. They could get chilled or sick. They had a large water bowl and not once did I ever see them play in the water. They are not ducks.

Cuttlefish bone should be safe to give them. It’s a good source of calcium. It’s sort of soft so they might just chew it up in a day so don’t be surprised if yours does this.

‘Tiels like water. Mine tries to take a bath in her water dish all the time. She also loves getting in the shower with me–of course, I’m careful not to let her get into my shampoo or bath soap, but she loves sitting on my shoulder when I’m wetting my hair before washing it. My vet says that ‘tiels need to be misted 2-3 times, per week to help keep dander down and their feathers properly oiled. Mine won’t quite go for it that often, but once a week is about usual and sometimes twice. The calcium in the cuttlebone in very important for bone strength, so don’t hesitate with that. My girl’s is attached to the side of the cage where she can reach it easily, but not in a spot she poops a lot.
