When is a good time for me to start taking my bird out of it’s cage without me being bitten?

Question by gangsta_bunny: When is a good time for me to start taking my bird out of it’s cage without me being bitten?
I just got a bird (cockatiel) yesterday, (i’ve never had one before) and it apparently hates me, but it occasionally chirps. (is this a good sign?) and i would like to know when i can start taking him out of the cage on my finger without the risk of him biting me?

If you wait for a “good” time, you’ll never get it out of that cage. The ONLY way to get a new bird used to you is to handle it as much as possible. You will HAVE to learn to accept a few bites. You can deflect them by turning your fingers under when it makes a move to bite — it’s harder for a small beak to get hold of a large knuckle. DO NOT wear gloves — instead, use a dowel-type perch to get the bird out of the cage or use a towel (but be careful you don’t crush the bird in the process). You have to take the initiative here and NOT wait for the bird to “let” you in.

If the bird’s wings are not clipped, it will take even longer. If they’re not clipped, take it to a vet or pet store to have the wings trimmed. This way, the bird will learn that it can’t just fly away when you try to handle it.

Removing pin feathers without making bird hate you?

Question by Anna: Removing pin feathers without making bird hate you?
My cockatiel has some feathers covered in a skin, I guess they are pin feathers. It makes him look like he got grass growing out of his head. I tried restraining him so I could roll it off but he cries and stresses out. Any tips or info? And no my bird is not food motivated so treats don’t work.

Best answer:

Answer by Suzi Q
Leave it alone. This is a normal part of the molting process. Molting is stressful, and you are making it worse. The sheaths will break away by themselves. Your bird does not want or need any help.

How do i get my partially tamed cockatiel out of his cage without hurting him?

Question by collin: How do i get my partially tamed cockatiel out of his cage without hurting him?
I recently bought a cockatiel. I’ve worked with him and he knows how to step up onto my finger now without biting me. But thats only when hes not in his cage. Whenever hes out of his cage hes a sweet loving bird but when hes in his cage hes the complete opposite. To get him out i have to chase him down in his cage and grab him then pull him out of his cage. It’s just to much stress for the both of us because sometimes he bites me and i get frustrated. I know thats not how your supposed to get a tiel out of their cage but he needs to get out of his cage doesnt he? How can i get him to come out of his cage willingly? Is target training the best option? And if it is how do i target train him? Please Answer ASAP
i tried to bribe him with millet, that didnt work. Once i get him out hes all over me, trying to go to my shoulder, giving me kisses, and talking to me. Ive tried leaving the cage door open before and that didnt work. What else can i do?
Also will hand feeding him millet help? I started that today and he just eats it right out of my hand. Will this help him build more trust with me?

Harness Training Without Force!

After a long and boring break from harness training Achilles, my blind cockatiel, I found I had some spare time from school one day and started it back up! Take a look at how far she has come since my last recording. Also notice how he has become conditioned to enthusiastically put her head in the harness. This was achieved using only Positive Reinforcement and Food Management. The inhumane and over-use of weight management is NEVER used! In a different popular harness training video you can see consistent use of Negative Reinforcement. The side effects of such training are akin to the use of Positive Punishment. Do NOT use the first method in training if you can avoid it (and you always can avoid it if you think)! And always stay clear of the last method, for you and your animal will suffer consequences moste dire!

how long can a cockatiel live without water?

Question by Robyn C: how long can a cockatiel live without water?
Monday evening I bought my cockatiel a new cage, and since then I haven’t seen him drink any water. He does not seem weak at all so maybe he’s been drinking while I’m not looking. It’s been about four days can they go that long without water. If they can how can I get him to drink? I’ve had him for 13 years and I don’t want to lose him.

Best answer:

Answer by DogzDude
There is a few simple answers, either (as you said) he’s drinking when you aren’t looking (mine does that a lot), or he’s decided it’s time to move on. I doubt the second one because these birds can last 15-30 years.

How to clip my cockatiel’s wings safely without harm?

Question by Loz: How to clip my cockatiel’s wings safely without harm?
Age: 2 years

Gender: Male

Colour: Grey lol

i am getting sick of him flying so i want his wings clipped but how do i do it?

Best answer:

Answer by dobie.pants
I would say the first time, go get it cut by someone who KNOWS what they’re doing. and you can watch.
generally bird stores will do it for a small fee, the place close to me only charges for it. there are websites on it, but i would REALLLLLLLY suggest you get it shown to you by a professional first. as birds have blood veins that run through their feathers and if you get one of them… well its not pleasant..
same goes with their toe nails.

Can I put my cockatiel in a larger cage without her getting upset, she has been in there for over a year.?

Question by : Can I put my cockatiel in a larger cage without her getting upset, she has been in there for over a year.?

this is an article i wrote

Introduce two birds slowly. Although they may take to each other immediately, it is not worth the risk of putting them in the same cage right away. Also, before you get a friend for your friend, make sure she is of a breed that likes the companionship of other birds.

Your new bird is dealing with a stressful situation. Besides worrying about the two birds getting along, you need to be careful of how you introduce the new bird to her new home. You can follow steps that will make life easier for her during this time of change.

First, provide separate cages for each bird. Put the new birdcage in another room so they cannot see each other. You are not going to put the two birds in the same cage for about two weeks. During this time, the new bird will get used to you and the new house, and the older bird will get used to hearing the new bird and “feeling” her presence. At the end of two weeks, put both cages in the same room. The cages can be placed close together, but not so close that the birds can reach each other through the cages. Leave the cages like that for three days. After three days, put the new bird in with the old bird.

Hopefully, your birds will be the best of pals. But be sure not to put them together and leave the room. Stay with them awhile to make sure they are getting along. If they are, they’re sure to become best friends.

how do I know that my cockatiel is sick if I’m buying it without taking it to the VET?

Question by Sherine: how do I know that my cockatiel is sick if I’m buying it without taking it to the VET?

Best answer:

Answer by Melon-Collie
Buy from a reputable breeder who gives a 7-14 day health policy for vet checkup.

This allows you time to get the bird to the vet, and a few days for test results.
