I have two parakeets and a friend of mine is giving me a baby cockatiel. I mean, baby-baby, as in is still growing his feathers. I want to wait a little bit before introducing him, but I’m worried that the parakeets might not like him or might do him harm.

Would they get along or should I invest in a second cage?

get two cages and put them next to each other to introduce them to each other and depending on what happens when they are near each other will let you know if they can be put in the same cage. Introduce them to living together gradually.

A cockatiel “might” be ok. But basically it’s not a good idea to mix breeds of birds unless they are babies. The reason?? More often than not, one will try to kill the other. Simply put.

I can honestly answer this because I have cockatiels of my own. One cockatiel (both being males) lives quite nicely (make sure there is plenty of space between them in order to move around in their house) with my Sun Conure, I would assume (however, call a bird store to get more info) that not only their own type of species, but the small parrot family line of birds I believe cockatiels would be able to adapt to.
