How do I get my Cockatiel out of his cage for the first time to go to the vet???

Question by Theo A: How do I get my Cockatiel out of his cage for the first time to go to the vet???
I just bought a male 7 or 8 month old cockatiel from a pet store. He has been pretty nice to me so far, I think because I am spoiling him. Even in the three days I’ve had him, he’s already eating millet out of my fingers at a close distance and rarely makes a big fuss when I’m messing around in his cage. My question then is pretty silly. I really want to take him out of his cage, and begin building our relationship. For that to work best, and to make sure he is healthy, I want to take him to a vet for a check-up and wing trimming. How do I effectively take him out of his cage without making him too upset or hurt? This would be his first time out of the cage and his wings have never been clipped before. At least not since I’ve had him. Any help is much appreciated!!
What I am afraid of is letting him out of his cage because his wings are not clipped and he will hurt himself. I can’t see myself being able to successfully towel him inside his cage. And I don’t want to just grab him…not sure what to do..

Your best bet is to wrap him in a towl. This will prevent the bird from thrashing around and possibly injury itself. Once you have him in the towl, it’s best if you put him in a small crate. This will help with the transport and hopefully minimize the stress to him.

My birds were like that their first time out of the cage.
I would put a food dish or some toys out, so he has some motovation to move around.
open a window, let him sit on the sill.
Get creative to help him interact in your household

first time cockatiel owner?

Question by Anto: first time cockatiel owner?
I have a female cockatiel just over a year old who regurgitates her food and chews it and swallows it…is that normal? I’m a first time bird owner and have had her about 2 weeks now..

Best answer:

Answer by Parrots
Yes, while not exactly the nicest thing to watch, this is entirely normal!

A cockatiel, male or female, regurtitates its food to feed its mate, and its young. If she is doing this when she is with you, she may have bonded with you already, and considers you her mate :)

Is it time for a trip to the avian vet?

Question by Clumsical of the !MC! Squad: Is it time for a trip to the avian vet?
I think I may be a little paranoid, but I think my cockatiel may be sick, once again.

He hasn’t been eating very much. He’s usually a very heavy eater but he hasn’t hardly touched his food in two days. Because of this, he has lost a bit of weight.

He’ll occasionally breath through his mouth. Not a lot, but for no reason he will occasonially become really short of breath and breath through his mouth for maybe five minutes.

He’s been really… short tempered… recently. A lot more lethargic, too.

Can all of this be related to the fact that he’s molting at the moment, or should I schedule a trip to our avian vet on Tuesday?
Might as well add this in. If he IS sick, are their any good home remedies I could use for the next two days until he can get into the vet? There are only two avian vets in my area. One that I refuse to use because she insists upon over medicating a bird every time it shows even a mild symptom of sickness, and the one we use that is only at the particular vet’s office that we go to on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If he gets bad, I suppose it would be worth spending the extra $ 1,000 for the emergency vet, but I don’t think it’s at that point yet.

Your little companion defiantly needs a little extra attention. I would look online at some different sites on the web for what it might be, it should tell you how to cure it and what it is. I know I wasn’t much help! Sorry :(

When is the best time to bring a hand-reared cockatiel home?

Question by abdul r: When is the best time to bring a hand-reared cockatiel home?
The breeder has 3 hand reared cockatiel which are spoon-fed and im planning on buying a cockatiel normal gray, the breeder is reputable and actually earns a living off it, and the cockatiel is 6 weeks old, I plan on getting it next saturday, so by then he’d be 7 weeks old? He told me the cockatiel will be ready by mid next week but we still decided to pick up the bird after a week. He showed millet that was eaten and he had place seeds and a piece of apple. Is getting the bird at age of 7 weeks is fine? I have no clue on how to feed it formula, he told me the bird is refusing the formula and is eating seeds. Also when I put my finger near its breast it stepped on my finger and was very calm, while his pied cockatiel brother was screeching for food, while the normal gray remained calm and quiet. Also will the bird survive if I get it next week or will it manage? I’d appreciate any help.

This question was asked and answered only a few hours ago. ARe you expecting a different answer?:
Don’t take it home unless it’s completely weaned. Some birds, like cockatiels and budgies, wean at only a few weeks (8 sounds more reasonable than 7 and you should never rush it).
I have three caiques and two of them came to me as fully weaned babies. One was just weaned at 3 months old and the other was 6 months old, but had weaned at 3 months.

DO NOT take this bird home if it’s still hand-feeding. No breeder worth their reputation would EVER let an unweaned baby be taken away.
Handfeeding is very tricky and you can seriously hurt the bird — you have to heat the formula a little bit before giving it to the bird and you can actually scald its crop and kill it, or you can OVERfeed it and kill it by practically drowning it with food.

As long as the bird is eating fully on its own and does not need any formula, it’ll be fine.

Why does my cockatiel do this all the time?

Question by ???: Why does my cockatiel do this all the time?
I know hes not sick because he is healthy and active, and does not appear in any way to be sick. He sits in the corner of his cage that he shares with a loved female parakeet (love as in friends) with his tail sticking up as if guarding the cage. He rips up the paper towel sometimes and forms a nest. If you get within three feet of the cage he will jump out and literally fly into your face and attack you. He is two years old. Why does he do this? Sometimes he is very nice and talks and snuggles you. He used to be this nicest bird I know! WHAT DO I DO?

Hes gaurding the parakeet as a mate, put the parakeet in a cage right next to him and he will chill out.

My cockatiel chirped for the first time, and keeps doing that, is anything wrong?

Question by grs: My cockatiel chirped for the first time, and keeps doing that, is anything wrong?
I got him yesterrday, took him out 3 times today to play with him. and he’s learned how to step up. i also took him too the vet today. he FINALLLY ate and found his water and food bowl and was able to get to it after i put him on there. He’s 3 months old. He just started chirpping after 10 minutes when i turned on the t.v. , nothing is wrong right? he isn’t stuck on his perch is he? (he is on his perch chirrping, is he just hanging out)? he also preens his feathers ALOT like every 5 minutes for like 1 minute straight. and his crest goes all the way up when someone makes an unfamiliar noise. then when he make noises that he knows like say ‘hello’ he twitches his head sometimes and lowers his crest. what does that mean?
