Letting a cockatiel out for the first time!?

Question by ` M <33: Letting a cockatiel out for the first time!?
Okay i want to let my cockatiel out of its cage for the first time o-O. I just got him like 3 days ago (3rd day starting today) he seems okay now, like he plays with his toys and moves around the cage a bit more. So umm this is the first time i’m letting a bird out and i don’t know what it will do. Will it jump and try to fly away (even though wings are clipped)? Can you tell your experience of letting a bird out for the first time ? Please? I’m very nervous

Believe it or not, having wings clipped could possible put him in more danger that if they had been left alone. It depends entirely on how skilled the person was who did the clipping. Because we, or at least I, don’t know, I do not recommend that you just open the door and let him go, just yet. You need to check for the safety of the clip. A proper clip is not intended, and should not, prevent them from flying. It should only prevent them from gaining altitude. A properly trimmed bird will still be able to fly/glide, for 15-20 feet, gradually losing altitude, and should be in control at all times. It should be able to make a controlled, balanced landing. If it cannot, then it’s either over clipped, or the wings don’t match, or both. To check this out, take your bird into a bedroom, hopefully with carpet. Under no circumstances, turn him loose from any height, over a hard floor. Release him from about waist high, over the bed and observe what kind of flight and landing he can make. Another thing is to sit him on the floor and allow him to realize that his wings are clipped. You want him to discover his limitation from ground level, not from up high. Cockatiels are particularly at risk of injury from improper clips because of how they land. They always land tail first. If they are over clipped, or out of balance, they will fall like a rock. The stiff tail feathers will hit first. The sharp upward bend will tear the skin near their vent. (Anus) This happened to one of mine, (clipped before I adopted it) and he immediately was pouring blood. If I had not been able to get him to the vet in about 15 minutes, he would have bled to death. Even so, he required IV fluids to save him and 4 stitches to mend the tear. Just be very careful until you determine how proper the clip is, and until you know he knows his limitations. If he does drop to fast or is not in control, then you will have no choice but to keep him caged until the flight feathers grow out. Then next time, either leave him fully flighted, or make sure the person doing the trimming knows what they are doing.

What should I do the first time I hold my cockatiel?

Question by krbowmaster: What should I do the first time I hold my cockatiel?
I adopted my first cockatiel three days ago. In a few days I want to let her explore her new home but I am really nervous about taking her out of her room (cage) for the first time. Anyone with advide on how to go towards her without scarying her, maybe giving steps? Also, will she most likely bite me the first time I pick her up and does a female cockatiels bite hurt? Thanks =]

Answer by neonzebra11
yes, the do hurt, enough to make you bleed :/ id suggest getting her wigs clipped so she cant fly around and picking her up gently and quickly and place her on your shoulder. thats the best place :]

When is a good time for me to start taking my bird out of it’s cage without me being bitten?

Question by gangsta_bunny: When is a good time for me to start taking my bird out of it’s cage without me being bitten?
I just got a bird (cockatiel) yesterday, (i’ve never had one before) and it apparently hates me, but it occasionally chirps. (is this a good sign?) and i would like to know when i can start taking him out of the cage on my finger without the risk of him biting me?

Best answer:

Answer by Pie-O-My
If you wait for a “good” time, you’ll never get it out of that cage. The ONLY way to get a new bird used to you is to handle it as much as possible. You will HAVE to learn to accept a few bites. You can deflect them by turning your fingers under when it makes a move to bite — it’s harder for a small beak to get hold of a large knuckle. DO NOT wear gloves — instead, use a dowel-type perch to get the bird out of the cage or use a towel (but be careful you don’t crush the bird in the process). You have to take the initiative here and NOT wait for the bird to “let” you in.

If the bird’s wings are not clipped, it will take even longer. If they’re not clipped, take it to a vet or pet store to have the wings trimmed. This way, the bird will learn that it can’t just fly away when you try to handle it.

What is the average time it will take to teach my cockatiel to talk?

Question by Dorsky: What is the average time it will take to teach my cockatiel to talk?
What is the average time it will take to teach my cockatiel to talk? I got my male albino cockatiel around 4 weeks ago and have been repeating the word hello to him whenever i enter the room, feed him, pick him up or open up his cage. i was just wondering roughly how long you believe it will take him to learn to say hello?

Best answer:

Answer by Shana B
Well it really depends on the bird. Some of them pick up new words in a few days, some take months and some times they never learn to talk. However males are much more likely to and you’re doing it right by repeating the word frequently. Best of luck to you!

I bought a very recently rescued cockatiel.I know he needs time to adjust but his cage is dirty. What do I do?

Question by Me-n-My Bird: I bought a very recently rescued cockatiel.I know he needs time to adjust but his cage is dirty. What do I do?
Last night I brought home a rescued cockatiel. He was rescued by people who were unexperienced with cockatiels. They did a great job but the cage is dirty. I know when first getting a new tiel you should just talk to them for the first few days. I actually have a bigger cage for him but I figured that would be too much too soon. I still think this cage is too dirty. Do I clean it and freak him even more or just wait the few days?

Best answer:

Answer by Suzi
Go ahead and put him in the new cage. He’ll be a little confused, but will calm down quickly.

Just make sure the new cage is set up with food and water.

Best of luck to you and your new bird!

For the initial stage, you may try using some of his favorite treats to lure him out of his cage. Spend more time with him outside his cage. Tiels love facial massage & gentle scratch at behind of his head. While massaging him, whisper softly to him, telling him love him or whatever. It’s not proven in scientific but usually they will be more likely to bond with you after constantly doing that.

Why does my cockatiel spend time in the bottom of her cage? She seems to be rearranging the paper.?

Question by Tristan: Why does my cockatiel spend time in the bottom of her cage? She seems to be rearranging the paper.?

Best answer:

Answer by ?Rayla?
She’s preparing to make a nest. This happens with many female cockatiels ready to breed. They will spend time in a corner of their cage and tear up their cage lining in an attempt to create a nest. It’s a good idea to know what to expect during this time. More information can be found here: http://www.cockatielcottage.net/egg_laying.html

birds dying? Same time?

Question by Jullie: birds dying? Same time?
Hi,
i have had two cockatiels and they both died in a matter of 2 weeks from coming to my home. We bought them from a bird store and the first one died so we went back to the store and they gave us another and it died in two weeks. And some people say is your house dirty? I dont want to sound braggy but we are quite wealthy and live in a nice clean big house. So its not that. I dont know what it is and i am scared to get another bird. What could it be?
Now the store did close down 2 months later maybe a bird flu went around? and the weird thing is is my mom got up at 6:00 and the bird was fine and showed NO symptoms f being sick and an hour later when she went to wake me the bird was dead. It was so weird and the birds would have their heads tucked under their wings. I dont know. PLZ help
Ya I returned the cage ( after i scrubbed it with bleach)
and i am hesitent to get another bird
Yes we do i should check that.
No i wasnt trying to brag about being “wealthy” i just get so many answers saying “well if u live in a messy house u probably killed them iwith some mold or something” i am just tired of those answers so i was making it clear.

yes we do use that.
No one smokes in our house tho only my bro does and hes moving out when he graduates high school when school ends. But he NEVER smokes inside always outside. he knows he would never do that even he thinks its gross
**WOW***
wow okay thank you,
i learned lot of things i did lots of research and took really good care of my birds (i am kind of perfectionest and like things to be clean but i am not crazy)
so i cleaned their dishes and cash every day between my family the birds were almost always out. so thank you very much
i didnt know air fresheners and such hurt birds i knew non stick cook ware did tho
thank you very much
also i know ALL about puppy mills i didnt know they did it with other animals too until i saw this thing on MSN with a video of petsmart animals and there was this one guy neuturing a rabbit with our gloves, he used clorax wipes to disinfect ANd the poor rabbit wasnt funny put to sleep so it could still feel pain
AWFUL do ppl think animals cant feel pain or something?
I DID DO RESEARCH!!!!
I AM FULLY
aware that teflon is poisinous to birds

Best answer:

Answer by cdsgeo2
Petsmart was closed down because the birds were all sick from the breeder they bought from.
If this is where you bought them ask for your money back and tell why.

Birds can die fast, they don’t show the signs of sickness like dogs and cats do.

I am so sorry you had to go through this.
Scrub down the cage with hot water and bleach, then rinse and rinse really well and dry and air well before ever putting another bird in this same cage.

These babies were sick when you bought them.
