Why is my cockatiel sitting this way?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by B L: Why is my cockatiel sitting this way?
Hi, I got a my first cockatiel a week ago and he is two years old. For some reason he sits in the bottom corner of his cage from time to time and if I try to give him scratchies or food he lashes out biting. He also only seems to chirp on the mornings. I have had him out of the cage and he likes to climb up my arm onto my shoulder. I thought it might be boredom so I purchased a few toys yesterday and I have put them on the table next to his cage so he can get use to them. I have been changing his water and seed daily and tired to introduce him to vegetables but he only seems to want broccoli. What more can I do? Should I see a vet?

Seems Like Lonliness or Boredom to me, make sure the bird is not by a window and has a large enough cage. E-mail Freevetelp@yahoo.com if you have more questions

I have a cockatiel that has flown against his cage so much he is bleeding. What do i do to stop this?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by CrazyMagoo: I have a cockatiel that has flown against his cage so much he is bleeding. What do i do to stop this?
My bird, Spike, is a really neat bird. Unfortunately, lately he has done something he has never done before. He randomly gets spooked by something. He has done it twice now, and i thought that maybe the first time he was just really scared by something, and he didn’t bleed much… just some on the tip of his wing. He did it again today, and he hadn’t done it for a few weeks, so i thought he was over it. He was bleeding so much at the time that he got quite a lot on the cage. He has stopped bleeding, and he is alert and calm now, and it doesn’t look like he is in shock. Any ideas? Does he need a bigger cage? Should we clip his wings more often? we ha vent done it for a long time. If anyone has any ideas, please tell me… i fear my bird is being hurt for something i can fix.
We do not know his age, he is definatly over 2 or 3 years of age.

I would recommend a blanket or towel to drape over the cage to help calm him the next time it happens.

I wouldn’t top 3-4. Any more can cause territory and personality issues.

My cockatiel is 19 and has become cage bound. Is this normal behaviour?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by Maree Pearson: My cockatiel is 19 and has become cage bound. Is this normal behaviour?
For the first few years of his life, he was always out and after leaving him with my parents to go overseas, he stayed in his cage and wont let me even pat him. He lives in a big cage and I move him around all day for comfort ie: I follow the sun around outside all day, then inside at night and even in the warm loungeroom in cold weather. I leave the cage door open all the time whilst he is in the house but he onle comes out about once every 2 months. It saddens me and would he be better off with a breeder or other birds? Needless to say he still sings and seems happy.

Answer by Alice
He’s prolly just getting older and just trying to relax more. A lot of animals get cranky as they age. No, he wouldn’t be a good breeder bird because of his age. I think it would be too hard on him. But maybe you could get him another bird friend. If the cage is big enough for 2 tiels, maybe you should get another one to keep him company in there? And another younger tiel might actually encourage him to want to come out of the cage more since the younger one will love coming out of the cage itself.
Other than that, just keep loving him. Talk to him outside his cage, if he doesn’t want to be pet then just leave him be. Always leave the door open though so if he wants to come out he can

It is too small. A cage should be the biggest you can afford, and a minimum 18X18X24. Also, the bar spacing should not be too big – at a maximum 3/4 of an inch.
EDIT: Mama said it much more politely than I would have. I didn’t want to bring it up because I had some pretty choice words to say to the idiot who thought it would be good to cram 5 birds into a cage I wouldn’t even keep a pet rock in!

Is this cage good for a sugar glider?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by sprtsking17: Is this cage good for a sugar glider?
I was wondering if this cage was good for a sugar glider. It was originally a bird cage but our bird died so I was wondering if this would work for a sugar glider. I wanna make sure they wont be able to escape and it will give them enough room. Thanks!

Yes, that would be just fine for a sugar glider as long as they have toys.
