The sooner the better. Just talk to her first in a soothing voice and reach your finger up towards her perch to see if she will climb on.
It may seem that she is trying to bite at first because they will taste your finger. It’s their way of checking to see if the new ‘branch’ is sturdy enough.
Watch her body language. If her feathers on top of her head are curled foreward, go slowly and if she hisses, just back away from her.
Holding out a treat to her makes her accept you easier, they especially love red pepper flakes or scrambled eggs.
Love and patience is the only way she or he will understand you won’t hurt her.
Best of luck to you and your new feathered friend.

How should I tame my grumpy cockatiel?

Question by NOODLE: How should I tame my grumpy cockatiel?
I have a cockatiel who we have had for 6 months, he hates anyone going near him and goes berserk if you touch him and flaps all around his cage til you take your hand out. I don’t know how to make him tame as he won’t even eat food from our hands and cannot even have a hand in his cage without feeling scared. What should I do to tame him?

should I clip my cockatiel’s wings?

Question by AMG: should I clip my cockatiel’s wings?
My cockatiel, Tre’, is about 3 years old. He’s had the privelege of flight since he first molted and grew his flight feathers out a couple years ago. When I bought him as a handfed baby, he was the sweetest thing and the way he jumped off the cage trying to fly broke my heart. I felt like it was his right as a bird to fly and I shouldn’t take that away from him. And so he flew… and things were fine.

Today, Tre’ is a troublemaking, cocky monster most of the time. He divebombs certain people, even ripped my friend’s glasses off in the process. He spends most of his time out trying to destroy my things. He lands on doors and chews the trim above them, knocks things off my walls so he can chew on them when they hit the floor, lands on my desk and chews up papers, etc.

He has a huge 33x30x18 cage filled with toys that I switch around (and I buy new ones regularly) so he can’t be bored. I even bought him a companion cockatiel (who’s wings are clipped) to keep him company. He has little interest in these things.

My question is, do you think Tre’ would be taken down a notch if I clipped his wings, too? I’m afraid he’s going to do the same heartbreaking jumps off his cage trying to fly again, and hate me for doing that to him… but the destruction and constant chasing him off of things is really getting old.

Thank you for your time.

Just put the bird in another room maybe. But don’t clip its wings.Isn’t it cruel to clip a birds wings? If you cant take care of the bird just give it away. But never do something like that. My friend has a special room for his African Gray Parrot. You know that s the cost of it.

Question by jbeets52: when should i take the babies away from its nest i wont my chicks to get tame.how old should the cockatiel .?
when is it safe to take baby cockatiel out of the nest, from mom.they are almost 3weeks old one baby is bigger then the other.is it safe to try to hand feed them now?

Best answer:

Answer by Joey E
I don’t know the age, but when they can eat on there own you can teach them to eat out of a spoon and work on eating out of your hand. Take them out and spend time with them. You don’t have to completely take them from there mother. Just spend time with them everyday and they will learn to trust you. I hope this helps.

Can I give my cockatiels raw corn cob? Should the nesting box be on the floor or top inside cage?

Question by TangTang: Can I give my cockatiels raw corn cob? Should the nesting box be on the floor or top inside cage?
Should I boild the corn cob before I serve it to my cockatiels or give it raw? Do I boil potato to soft to serve or must I mash it? My cage is +- 30″wide, 18″deep and 17″high. Now the nesting box is mounted inside in the top corner, but should it be on the floor of the cage? How about when the babies need to move around the cage and leave the box?

Best answer:

Answer by annepatriciawebb
Cockatiels LOVE corn on the cob – wash and give it raw. Not too often, once a week is fine. Raw vegetables should be given always. Mine like peas from the pod, it’s their favourite treat! I successfully bred a family indoors, place the cage up as high as you can, position a perch close to the entrance so they can hop in and out. If they produce eggs – leave them alone, or risk being pecked by Mum! They are wonderful parents. Once eggs start to appear, don’t panic if they don’t sit on them immediately, they can lay up to 10 eggs over a few days (my max was 8) and once they are all layed – then they will sit on them. Dad will sit in the daytime and Mum at night – usually. Get some Egg Food from the pet store (EMP is a good one) I usually mix it will a drop of warm water and put a little bit of smooth peanut butter with it – they love this dry crumbly mash! Also, when chicks have hatched they use it to feed them – so you will need to keep a supply handy. Not too much greenstuff, specially lettuce (which is not good for them, gives them the runs!) . The chicks will eventually venture out and hop onto the perch outside their nest – the rest is up to them. Clear swings and stuff out of their way as they are very clumsy – I used to let mine fly around the room to start with, closing the curtains first to stop them crashing into windows – they can easily be recaptured once they have attached themselves to your curtains! My birds are now outside in an aviary – they live with three canaries and about 30 zebra finches and all get along very well! Best of luck!

What Should I Do With This Bird?

Question by Mirth Fortune: What Should I Do With This Bird?
A Week ago My vet was trying to re-home a pigieon (Archangel) and gave him to me. I took him for a week to see how well he tames. He has tamed well and fits in very nicely here, HOWEVER!!!!! Here is where it gets sticky, I have a 7 month cockteil that I got while he was still weaning off. I have school and other life stuff for me to attend to. I don’t feel as if I can/am spending my time equally bettween them and that I am not able(with 2 birds) to give them both the time they dezerve. They are both wonderfull creature and I hate to let one go, but I wanted to know what other thought.

One major problem I have with this is that the vet that I would have to return him to, is NOT an avain vet! He knows close to nothing about him, as how to hold him so he is comfterble with people and what to feed him. When I picked him up they had been feeding him wild turkey feed. He said he had a friend that would take him, but it sounds as if this friend might just have a coup outside. He is pretty socail and I don’t know if he can ajust to being in my room to being outside.

Cons:
I do dearly love him and would love to keep him
The Vet knows close to diddly-squat about birds
Don’t know if he can adjust to being outside in a coup

Pros:
My cockateil with get the attention he needs
The Pigeion will beable to fly more (Possibly)
I really don’t have enough time for them both.

I am probobly going to bring him back, even if I love him, It’s unfair to keep a bird that I don’t have the proper time for. It’s also unfair for my cockateil, he was my first real pet of my own and he love me dearly. I hope someone can tell me what they think. PLEASE HELP

Best answer:

Answer by Cat
I know you said you don’t have time but could you possibly find someone else to take the bird who knows a little bit more than say your vet and who might keep the bird in a similar situation (inside) like you do? Ask friends and other bird lovers that you know if they’d like to take the bird in. This way your cockateil will get more attention, the pigeon will too, and hopefully the pigeon will be taken care of better by the person rather than the vet. Good luck!
