Answer by muddpuppie
the rule of thumb for a cage for any bird is the bigger the better, get the biggest one you can afford for the space you have…. a 24x24x34 will be good for 1 cockatiel that gets out of the cage every day, but not for one that doesnt get to come out.. i have 4 cockatiels in a 2x4x6ft.. and they have room to fly and get to come out of the cage every day, also have a single cockatiel in a 24x34x34 and he comes out every day

I have a cockatiel that just layed her eggs but she won’t come out to eat? What should I do?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by Linda H: I have a cockatiel that just layed her eggs but she won’t come out to eat? What should I do?
My cockatiel is a lil over a year old, we have a male bird who’s about 5 yrs old and they’ve never mated. I think it’s because the male is used to us humans and even though he did adjust to the female he never did want to mate with her. But she still made mating calls and now has laid her eggs. She won’t come out to eat or drink water and she is being a protective “mother” and won’t let us get her. I put some food n water in the little home with her but she’s not eating or drinking. I am worried she will die. What should I do? Take away the eggs? She won’t come out at all. Please help ASAP.

Answer by Allison M
Don’t do anything!
Just cover the cage with a sheet and she’ll come out when she’s ready.
They don’t want anyone around because they’ll freak out and think someone or something is going to take their eggs. So yes she’s being a protective mother and she’ll eat when she’s comfortable

Will my cockatiel get lonely, should I get another one?
Category: Cockateil Toys Q&A
Question by sunbreeze2008: Will my cockatiel get lonely, should I get another one?
Two days ago I bought a 2-month old cockatiel. I thought he wasn’t very tamed because the owner didn’t seem to have a very easy time catching him & I couldn’t touch him much either. So I’ve been talking & trying to let him perch on my finger, & surprisingly he let me hold him & carry him around the house on my shoulder all day today. I think he enjoys it a lot because when I put him back to his cage he didn’t want to get off of my finger
My family is very thrilled with him because we’ve never had a tamed bird before so everyone is playing with him now.
I place the parakeets cage about 10 feet across from him & they’re always singing. Now do you think he will get lonely in the day time when we’re not home? We’re gone from around 7:30 to 4:30. He has plenty toys & the cage is quite roomy for one. I want him to have a friend but at the same time still be bonded with us.

he should be fine.. esp due to the fact of the little parakeets near him. keep toyus and just play with him when you get home…

What should I do to help my cockatiel?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by J Bone: What should I do to help my cockatiel?
My cockatiel has been fluffing up and sitting at the bottom of the cage so I know he’s sick. I can’t take him in to get checked out until tomorrow. I hope it’s just a cold but I need to know if I should do anything until tomorrow. What do I need to do?
Best answer:
Answer by {øEmpty Setø}
Keep him warm with heat lamps or heating pads.
Make sure he has clean water and healthy foods (vegetables and fruit) and millet spray. And keep the area quiet and have him sleep his 14 hours in a dark environment.
I keep packets of medicine in my pet supplies (from the pet store.) It would be nice to have some on hand next time, either from vet or pet store.
Hope your cockatiel feels better!

Question by krbowmaster: What should I do the first time I hold my cockatiel?
I adopted my first cockatiel three days ago. In a few days I want to let her explore her new home but I am really nervous about taking her out of her room (cage) for the first time. Anyone with advide on how to go towards her without scarying her, maybe giving steps? Also, will she most likely bite me the first time I pick her up and does a female cockatiels bite hurt? Thanks =]

yes, the do hurt, enough to make you bleed :/ id suggest getting her wigs clipped so she cant fly around and picking her up gently and quickly and place her on your shoulder. thats the best place :]

What perch should I get for my cockatiel?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by Jolece: What perch should I get for my cockatiel?
I know some perches can hurt their feet. I have the Blue Ribbon Cage Connection Espresso Three Peak Roof Bird Cage. It comes with 2 perches but don’t know what kind of perches are those. Which perches are more safe and comfortable for your cockatiel? Thx.(:

Don’t use sticks from outside. Personally, I don’t like gravel perches, but some people swear by them. Rope perches will be eaten.
It’s good to have multiple perches of different widths in the cage. This helps prevent foot disorders in all birds. A good, natural wood perch is a great idea, but make sure it’s a different width than the ones it comes with (those are usually just common perches, made from natural wood).

Should I SELL my cockatiel and canary?!?!?!?!?!?!? HELP PLEASE?!?!?!?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by horseys: Should I SELL my cockatiel and canary?!?!?!?!?!?!? HELP PLEASE?!?!?!?
OK so I have a 6 month old, male cockatiel named Winston & a yellow male canary named Tango.
I bought-
Winston for $ 120
Tango for $ 100
The HUGE cage that they share for $ 50
And then spent probably $ 100 on toys, food, perches, swings…etc. (maybe more money… i don’t remember exactly)
ALL OF THIS WAS MY HARD EARNED MONEY!
So anyways I clean their food and cage everyday and they are well taken care of and they keep eachother company and so on. But lately I haven’t had enough time to spend with Winston. I feel bad because I know they need daily attention. But I’ve been busy with school ending and projects and so on. I only see him in the morning when I wake up…. then I go to school. Then I see him at 3:00 but only for like 10 min. and then I go to the barn… come home… clean their cage and then it’s time for them to go to bed since they need 10-12 hours of sleep.
SO I don’t know what to do?!?
Should I sell them? And if I do where should I sell them?

How should I clean an untamed cockatiels cage?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by shaRT: How should I clean an untamed cockatiels cage?
Hello, I’m new to having a cockatiel. Just got this little guy yesterday from Petco.
When it’s time to clean his cage, what’s the best way to get him to come out without me disturbing him or making him upset? I want him to be able to trust me without feeling that I’m being too intrusive. I know it may take time, but I want to try to be able to get him out without being bitten, or having him feel invaded too much.
My other cockatiel, which was a baby that just passed away was totally tame, but the new one I just got is a bit on the skiddish side and hisses on occassion.
Anyway, your helps is appreciated.
