Cockatiel refuses to use the nest for her egg laying?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by typicalpastramisauce: Cockatiel refuses to use the nest for her egg laying?
Our cockatiel hen keeps pushing her eggs out of the nest and onto the bars at the bottom of the cage, where she sits on them. She seems content there, but I really don’t think the babies will be all too happy to be hatched out onto bars where they can probably fall through. Should we just keep putting in different nest styles until she finds one she likes?

Question by phantomisle: Would it be a good idea to place the runt cockatiel of one batch into another nest box with different ‘tiels?
I’m running out of options Is it a good idea to place the runt of the litter of cockatiels I mentioned in my last question into another cage where hopefully a different set of cockatiels will take care of it??? I’m not sure. Should I? Will the other two cockatiels take care of it and make it grow and stuff?

I don’t know the age, but when they can eat on there own you can teach them to eat out of a spoon and work on eating out of your hand. Take them out and spend time with them. You don’t have to completely take them from there mother. Just spend time with them everyday and they will learn to trust you. I hope this helps.

I have 5 Cockatiels, Two are the parents and the other three are babies (6 weeks old) they like to be in the nest box, with the parents. The eggs look okay but is it better to take them out.

it really depends on how old the babies are, if they are eating solids, i dont see why not, but why the rush??
also the sooner u take them out, the friendlier they will get

Attaching Cockatiel’s Nest Box To The Side Of Cage?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by Mackenzie R: Attaching Cockatiel’s Nest Box To The Side Of Cage?
Dear Cockatiel Breeders,
I was looking on how I could put our Cockatiel’s nest box so that they could go inside of it and outside at night, and I found a video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odm4xJfNAxY&feature=related ) that had a very interesting way they put their Cockatiel’s nest box.
The position we had and still currently have it is on the top of the cage. It is tied down and can not harm any of the bird(s) inside of it. But the problem is that we close the cage at night, so Grey Grey (female) can’t get into the nest box at night, and when she is in it she can’t get to the food without leaving the nest, which could probably kill the babies if she is gone for too long.
I wanted to fit in inside the cage, but there wouldn’t be enough room for the Cocktiels themselves!
This breeder had her nest box in a very interesting way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odm4xJfNAxY&feature=related And I was wondering would the rough edges from the cut bars hurt the birds if they tried to get in/out of the nest box and cut them?
Or would it be okay if I put it that way? We haven’t done it yet, and Grey Grey is nearing the day she’ll lay her eggs. Would this be okay, or should I put it a different way?
Any suggestions, comments, or answer will be greatly appreciated!

How old are the babies? Did you pull the babies to handfeed? If so you need to use an approved handfeeding formula that is formulated with balanced nutrition to help the chick grow and thrive.
If the babies are still in the nest and the parents are feeding them an egg food supplement is OK to feed the parents and they’ll feed the babies but if their diet is balanced you shouldn’t need to ad vitamins.
If you don’t know what you’re supposed to feed a baby Cockatiel and you are trying to handfeed it you need to find an experienced breeder to teach you how, otherwise you could kill it.

should a male cockatiel have a nest box?

Question by Colt45: should a male cockatiel have a nest box?
I made my own big cockatiel cage and i wanted to know if a male cockatiel will
need or want a nest – nest box. Also, do they roost on branches, sleep in a nest or do they sleep on the floor of the cage? =)

It’s not necessary to have a nest box for a male cockatiel. But what I would recommend, because my male lovebird LOVES it, is a “fluffin muffin”. That’s the name I gave to this little hollow tube that is covered in fuzz. He loves to go into it and snuggle at night, and he goes in there when people come over he’s not familiar with–it’s added security for him and he likes it. You can find one at a local pet shop. They also have ones that kind of look like tents and they seem to like those too.
As for roosting, if you notice your little guy on the bottom of his cage, that’s cause for concern! Birds naturally feel safer in a higher place. You’ll probably notice your tiel will favor whichever perch is highest in his cage. But if he starts sleeping on the ground, this can be a sign he’s ill. Often times sick birds will do that because they don’t have the energy to stay on a perch.
Good luck!!!

Question by Ebony Fitzpatrick: my female cockatiel lays in my home made nest box, but she isnt acting normaly, im worried about her..pls help?
little lady, my female cockatiel, sits in her home made box along with my male, cuddles….but she is acting differently than usual,
here are all the weird goings ons…
1- she is always so sweet, now, when we TRY and pet her, she backs away, and hisses at us!
2- She always sits in this one corner where the door is…i move her all the way to the other side, she hisses at me, i take my hand out…then she moves all the way over to the corner again!
3- She is usually really energetic and flew around alot, now she fluffes herself up and puts her vent onto the floor and lays down alot…
4- Not to sound like a perve or anything, but i havent seen her poop in long periods of times, then she lets out a big one…its weird
5- Well, this isnt really a problem, its just cute, cuddles and little lady rub each others cheeks, is that a clue to anything?
Please help me some body!
im afraid that she is sick or has a cold (well dont blame me…it IS winter)
PLS SOMEBODY HELP ME!!!!
3- Usually energetic,

If she’s been like this for days, I would suggest maybe taking her to the vet. She could be egg-bound (egg somehow stuck). Make sure she gets plenty of calcium by giving her eggshells or oyster calcium (they sell it in pet shops), along with cuddle bone. It does sound like there’s an egg on the way though and that’s why she’s defending her little corner.
