my new cockatiel is only eating millet?

Question by jeherohaku: my new cockatiel is only eating millet?
we got her (at least i think its a her) yesterday. she is a 22 month old cockatiel that we adopted from petco, and she has never been hand trained or had her wings clipped.

well, she hadn’t been eating until we moved her to a more populated room, but then she ate almost all of the millet spray we put in her cage, and none of her actual food. is this normal? does she need to be shown where the food is?
and they had millet in her cage at the store and she is on the exact same food – i checked with one of the employees.
and i tried to give her some apple, because i read it was ok and it was the only fruit in the house, but she didn’t want anything to do with it.

and its weird because i had her in an upstairs bedroom before and she didn’t seem happy and so we moved her into the basement and now she seems really happy. she is eating the millet and she also nibbled on the cuttlebone i had in there for her and she has been drinking a lot and preening herself and chirping very quietly, almost like the doves i had once… it was like night and day.

She probably hasn’t been given a lot of millet spray in her life at the pet store. It is considered a treat in most homes, and the pet stores aren’t keen on giving treats. When my cockatiels are given millet, they eat all of it before moving on to their regular food. She might not be used to the regular food you are giving her, or it may not be what she wants. Try giving her fresh fruits and veggies, and perhaps try a different brand of bird seed if she isn’t into the kind you have.

Should I really be providing my cockatiel with Spray Millet 24/7?

Question by ross r: Should I really be providing my cockatiel with Spray Millet 24/7?
So, I have this baby cockatiel. He’s about nine weeks old and is still eating baby food–but only twice a day. He’s very good at eating his other foods too. He eats lots of pellets, veggies, fruits, and the small amount of seeds that he’s provided. He eats really well!

Anyways, I was told to provide him with spray millet all the time until he becomes about six months old. But I want to use spray millet as a training treat only. Plus, I don’t want him to spoil his healthy diet ):

you dont have to keep spray millet in there all the time. Im not sure who wouldve told you this… like you said, its more of a treat. JAs long as he’s eating the other things you give him, he’ll be fine

I just got my cockatiel to stand on my hand and eat millet, now what?

Question by Casey: I just got my cockatiel to stand on my hand and eat millet, now what?
I started feeding my Cockatiel Wally millet through the cage. Then 20 minutes ago I put my hand in there with the millet, right away he came over to it and stood on his perch and leaned over to eat it, then when he finished that side he got up on my hand and stood there on my hand eating millet!
So when can I try to take him out?

Also I got him 5 days ago.

Answer by horsesrule
if you got him 5 days ago i seggest that you not take him out right away.he is still not used to you and the new place.he will start flapping his wings around and may get hurt and also yu should teach him to come to your hand when you ask him to not when you have food in your han.that just means he cares more about getting the food.so take your time with him and train him good luck. :)
