Will my cockatiel get lonely, should I get another one?

Question by sunbreeze2008: Will my cockatiel get lonely, should I get another one?
Two days ago I bought a 2-month old cockatiel. I thought he wasn’t very tamed because the owner didn’t seem to have a very easy time catching him & I couldn’t touch him much either. So I’ve been talking & trying to let him perch on my finger, & surprisingly he let me hold him & carry him around the house on my shoulder all day today. I think he enjoys it a lot because when I put him back to his cage he didn’t want to get off of my finger :) My family is very thrilled with him because we’ve never had a tamed bird before so everyone is playing with him now.

I place the parakeets cage about 10 feet across from him & they’re always singing. Now do you think he will get lonely in the day time when we’re not home? We’re gone from around 7:30 to 4:30. He has plenty toys & the cage is quite roomy for one. I want him to have a friend but at the same time still be bonded with us.

he should be fine.. esp due to the fact of the little parakeets near him. keep toyus and just play with him when you get home…

Cockatiel is lonely ?

Question by Antrobus: Cockatiel is lonely ?
Here is the deal,

I’ve always loved my cockatiel “Lilly.” Since I’ve gotten her I’ve given her 2 hours a day of play time with me: eating fruit, playing with toys, exploring outside. Recently I’ve been put in a situation that I can’t take her out as often. I still take her out once a day, but now it’s for about 45 minutes as opposed to 2 hours. I know it’s wrong to claim that my day is more stressful and filled with time, but that is the fact. I can tell she is lonely because every time she sees me she is more vocal which I take as, “Please come play with me!”

Basically I would like to know if there is a way to make the time I have with her more valuable. This time consumption won’t last forever and soon I’ll be able to spend as much time with her as I did before, but I’d like to know if there is a way to bond in such a limited amount of time.

Thanks,

Antrobus

If you are at your computer often you could make or buy her a perch and put it on your desk with some newspaper underneath so she can at least be near you if you are on the computer, and you can talk to her too if she on the perch near you.

And if that is all the time that you have for her then maybe you should get her a friend so she won’t be so lonely,

I made a perch for mine though ( I only have one ‘tiel)
And she is on her perch next to me as I type.

I hope things work out.

Is my cockatiel lonely?

Question by Chester: Is my cockatiel lonely?
Hi i have a female cockatiel (a bird), and she always seems to be perfectly happy with the birdcage sitting right in the main living room where she can see people coming and going (i am 19 and still live with my parents).

Is that enough attention to give her? I work full time in the night shift and cant decide what else i can do to entertain her except let her out and hope i can get her back in before i got to get to bed (which is not too much later). Unfortunately she was not tamed very well as a youngin’, so she is quite a “wild thing” when turned loose (flies very clumsily). Loves to perch herself outside the kitchen window sill a lot. I get pretty sympathetic sometimes and can’t help but feel bad about caged pet birds.

I assume she is a typical female wanting a mate (she gets in heat when the room gets quiet) but would she be able to handle a male companion for as old as she is? She is about 5 years old and is just the most stubborn thing you could meet. I am pretty sure there is not an internet dating service out there for birds, lol!

Should i buy some toys or is she too old for toys?

Any suggestions on making this precious bird happier would be groovy!

By all means get her some toys . just one or 2 at first. Work on your step ups by laddering —Making her step up from one finger to the other like a ladder. This will make her easier to handle. A half hour of dedicated time is pretty good- more would be better. You might want to get the wings clipped by someone who knows what they’re doing. You want to get a clip that lets her glide nicely to the floor. I wouldnt get another bird unless you want to take care of two.

A buddy for my lonely cockatiel?

Question by a_battle_within: A buddy for my lonely cockatiel?
I have a male Cockatiel (Tucker) whom I bought to be a companion or to breed with a female Cockatiel (Timmie) that I’d had for two years. They hit it off instantly, and were very close. Timmie ended up having a prolapsed uterus from being eggbound, and had to be put down. Tucker was just as heartbroken as the rest of the family, and quit singing at all. (He knows the Andy Griffith theme). Recently I put a big mirror in his cage, and he went straight to it and has not left it since. I was wondering if it would be ok to put a different type of bird with him as a buddy. I’ve been thinking of a parakeet since they eat basically the same food. I don’t want another cockatiel because they’re so hard to sex, and I couldn’t bear another “Timmie”. That was awful. Any advice?

How about a Budgie. My cockatiel is 18 years old, nearly 19, and he used to share a cage with a Budgie that we found injured in the garden, which we later named Tom. They got on very well, and were the best of mates. The Budgie loved grooming the Cockatiels head, and we found that the Budgie picked up things really quickly, and the Cockatiel learnt of him.

I’m not sure of putting a Parakeet in with Tucker, since the Parakeet is a bigger bird, and Tucker might feel as though this bird is taking over.

Do I have to wait a week to take my new (hand-fed) baby cockatiel out of it’s cage to play/sit with it?

I just bought the cockatiel yesterday and the breeder said to wait a week to let it out of the cage, but it seems so lonely and scared. It liked me handling it when I was in the store.

Is my cockateil lonely? Would a female companion help?

I love my male cockatiel, he’s so sweet and sociable. He’s just a little under 2 years. The thing is he’s getting really demanding of my time lately, I take him out daily and let him sit with me or roam around or whatever, but I only let him do so when I have the other animals put up and the kids are at school to minimise the chances of him accidently getting underfoot or something. Oftentimes when I have him in his cage he makes this awful sqwaking noise until I can’t stand it anymore and go to him. What do I do? Do you think a female cockateil would help, Not necessaarily to breed but just to have someone else for him to talk back and forth with? Any other ideas?

Is this a good idea; to get a mate for my male cockatiel?

I have one male cockatiel that is in his cage 95% of time, and nobody in my family has much time to play with him. And he screams a lot when he’s lonely. Is it a good idea to get a female cockatiel for him. Will he be making more noise?
