Cockatiel breathing hard!?

Question by blitz.empire: Cockatiel breathing hard!?
I did post a question about my bird earlier since I thought he was sick, but now it’s even more concerning…

I’m very worried at this point for my precious ‘tiel. He’s starting breath hard now normally. Not just when he flies off rapidly, but just normally now. It’s also like wheezing and when I hold him with my hands, not tightly, I can feel his rib cage more than I used to.

Now when I scrub his cage down every week, I use scrubbing bubbles on the bottom part of the cage, grid, and pul out part where I put the lining. I smelled the pull out part and it smells a little like the scrubbing bubbles.

I’ve cleaned the cage like this twice now in two weeks apart.

Can this be causing him to have problems with breathing?

it might be the chemicals. i know that when my sister’s stupid friend sprayed perfume on her birds cage because she thought it smelled bed, the bird died a few days later. you shouldn’t use any chemicals on your birds cage without washing it off really well. and as for when it wheezes when flying, thats normal. If he was flying for a long time and he isn’t used to flying a lot he will get short of breath

I would suggest cleaning the cage right away. For my birds I use water with a little bit of dish soap in it and than rinse it off really well. And I’ve had my cockatiels for almost 8 years now so it’s worked for me.

Good look with your cockatiel

P.S. I don’t think that your bird will die like my sister’s friend’s bird did, atleast you didn’t spray perfume on it.

Cockatiel doesnt want to come out? Hard to tame?

Question by Anna: Cockatiel doesnt want to come out? Hard to tame?
I bought a one year old cockatiel 3-4 months ago. I have been able to teach him to step up and occasionally he will let me pet his head and he will nap on me. However, after his wings have grown out (and I do not intend to re-clip them) he only flies to his cage. He is not food motivated and isn’t interested in toys so I cant “reward” him. I have tried to have him out a couple of hours a day to get him used to being out. (Usually if you leave the cage door open he will never come out on his own) He was sick a couple of days ago and been left alone so he could make a full recovery (I cant take him to the vet cuz its impossible to draw blood and he gets so stressed). However, now he has started to sing and is not happy about coming out. How can I get my bird to want to be outside and be around me? Also I have noticed he will only eat if I am in the kitchen where he can see me best. So he starves himself until I start making breakfast or dinner. What can I do about this?

Clicker Training:Cockatiel Kiwi have a hard time ;-)

We remain responsible forever of what we have tame. dont forget it!! dont buy bird, ADOPT! During the first couple of lessons, Kiwi is working very hard to put the ring on the peg. She knows where it goes, but have some trouble to get it on… it’s so funny ;-) Au debut de son apprentissage, Kiwi travaille tres fort pour essayer de mettre le rond sur sa pole. Elle sait ou il va, mais a beaucoup de difficultĂ© a le placer ;) Continue de pratiquer, tu vas trouvĂ© le truc !!!

My baby cockatiel is hard to tell the sex of?

Question by Scared :( : My baby cockatiel is hard to tell the sex of?
Well, I have heard that you can’t tell until the first moult…my cockatiel is only 7 weeks old, but can you tell by their behavior? I put a mirror in the cage and little jingle bell toy and then I bought a play area for the bird, but i’ve only heard it make a sound about 3 times in the 4 days that i’ve had it…It doesn’t talk at all! I really am hoping that it’s a male :P

Hello!
You are right, it is hard to tell with assurence what gender your birdie is before the first molt.
From what you’ve been telling me~~ it could be either one!
My opinion? Post updates in a few weeks and if it sings a lot or talks a bunch then it is a male!
If it makes a noise or two here and there but refuses to sing or show A TON of activeness, I think its a female.
I hope you and your birdie have a great life!!

Are cockatiels hard to take care of?

Ok, I’m getting a tiel real soon and I read stuff on the internet and they sound kinda hard to take care of.. Is it really that hard? Or once you get a good schedule or whatever you get used to it? Also, how do you stop a baby from crying/squacking. Because mine is still at the petstore and isnt fully weaned and I’m scared hes gonna squack forever.
