Are my cockatiels going to lay eggs?
Category: Cockateil Health Q&A
Question by animallover: Are my cockatiels going to lay eggs?
I have two cockatiels, a male and female. About a month and a half ago my other male was sick and died. Now my other two have been doing it like crazy and acting a lot different. I put a breeding box in there about a week ago and they’ve been hanging around in there a lot but haven’t laid any eggs yet. I thought I read online that it would take 7-10 days after a successful breeding. I also read that males can’t make babies after around 12-14 years. My male is 11 or 12 years old so I’m wondering if he’s too old? I’m not in particular wanting them to breed, but now I’m a little dissapointed that they haven’t laid any eggs. And thanks, but I’m not looking for any advice along the lines of ‘breeding should only be for the experienced and yada yada’. I’ve had my male since he was two weeks old and hand fed and cared for him, so I have a little experience. (I actually had him and his sister, but she died a few years ago : () Anyways, back to the question! If anyone can give me any clues, that’d be great. Thanks!

try watching them some budgies dont like to be watched as they mate, but if you live them alone and come back slowly in after a wille it might help, or stay still in bed and look at them once in a wille, budgie males do a breading dance, before mating to get the female atracted, then they get on top of each other, its a sign there mating. a female budgie should start becoming chubier, and practecing feading her male, or sometimes even toys. youll see signs of motherness in her, when she starts to care for every thing, the male and the female will start doing practices to bring each other food as one is at rest. once you noticed your bird dose start to sit in the nest, its probably a sign she is starting to lay eggs and you should start keaping her more company, here is a site i checked to help you with there breading and babies, please report if they do have babies

your going to be a very lucky parent:)
look at the photos to be able to notice first egg signs and babies
good luck

I used to have a pet cocketiel . He lived for 13 years with us . (ever since I was a baby ) Then he got too old =*( . Male and female cocketiels have pretty much the same attitudes . They get used to you very easily if you take good care of them . They can live for 15 years or older if they are healthy. The bad thing about cockatiels is that they are noisy birds. And you have to clean their cages only once every 3 or 2 weeks. I’m 13 years old and I took care of the cocketiel ever since I was 6 years old. So they are very easy to take care of and are happy to see you.

You need to see a vet right away. Birds don`t have a lot of body mass to lose if they get sick they can go down fast. Anytime a bird is puffed up there is a problem.

Cockatiel going a little crazy?
Category: Cockateil Health Q&A
Question by SteveO: Cockatiel going a little crazy?
Can anybody help.
We just got a cockatiel from my brother in laws aviary. The story goes that it was originally bought for a little girl who “played” with the bird for a while (about 6 months), got sick of it and gave it away. She has been an aviary for the past 18 months until we decided to take her home. It was hand raised as well. I think she’s about 2 years old, roughly and we only THINK she’s a she…. Not sure how to sex them.
For the first few days it was awesome. Couldn’t have asked for a better little bird. It would let you tickle her right from day one, she came and sat on my shoulder, likes to sleep on my foot, plays games etc etc, basically a really nice little birdy ! And best of all was pretty quiet even when left alone in her cage.
However, the last couple of days she has become very very loud. Screeching all the time and pacing back and forth on one of the perches in her cage.and starting to bite us when we try to give her a scratch / tickle. I swear, she just wont shut up till it gets dark out side and we turn all the lights off.
I read on a cockatiel website that she may want to mate, could this be the problem ?
Would she identify me as being her mate, as strange as that may sound ?
Might she have had a mate in the aviary that we took her away from ? If so, should we put her back in the aviary, or should we get her a new wee boyfriend ? Or even another type of bird for company, perhaps a finch or a budgie ?
Any time that my girlfriend has the bird out of the cage and is trying to play with her, tickle her etc, she keeps trying to fly over to be with me. Then, when she’s with me, she’ll sit on my shoulder and go to sleep. She’s quiet at this point but if you try to touch her, she bites me.
I’d be most grateful for any help you could offer me guys and gals. Thanks heaps.
Mr Confused.

I have 3 cockatiels – 2 males and 1 female. The males make the most noise and will rattle the birdcage bars with their beaks. Sounds like yours may be a male. The females also have stripes on the underside of their tail feathers. He may be missing his mate.

Hey im going to get a cockatiel soon but i already have 2 budgies named sunny & peaches. And im very responsible and i give alot of attention to my birds. Im getting a cockatiel because i want to train it to whistle, talk, get on my shoulder, ect. My parakeets dont bond with me so im getting a single cockatiel so it can bond with me. But i will still care for my parakeets.
• Whats a better gender? Male or female? [ & explain why please]
• Can cockatiels eat parakeet food or do they need cockatiel food?
• What do i need to ask the breeder? [This is what im going to ask so far]
- Are they hand fed?
- How old are they?
- Is it male or female?
- Is he friendly?
What else should i ask?
• What happens if i buy a cockatiel that WASNT hand fed could i still tame them?
• Do they like bath’s
• Should i put them in seperate cages?
• Tell me facts about them good and bad tell me.
Well thats all i hope you can help me.

Tiels are great birds. I currently have 1 male tiel and 4 budgies all in the same enclosure. They all get along fine. None were hand fed when I got them. 1 male budgie and the tiel are more tame than the others. They allow me to handle them and they both say “goodnight” by fanning their wings and whistling. The others don’t do that. In my experience males are much more friendly. All of my birds enjoy a light spritzing with water. And I mix tiel food with keet food and they all eat out of the 2 containers in their cage (a large flight cage). You sound pretty prepared and have some good questions to ask. Good Luck!

He could be molting. When they are, they act a little meaner, but it isn’t anything unusual. If they are acting weird (fluffed up feathers, runny, nose, weird symptoms) then it is sick.

Going to identify my lost cockatiel?
Category: Cockatiel Sounds
I’ve posted a few different questions this past week so I’m sure some of you will be familiar with this. I lost my cocaktiel in mid April and now a woman in Chicago thinks she has him. I will be driving up on Sunday to see if it’s him. The pictures she has sent me look just like him and he has a lot of the same habits my Sammie did.
I guess the question is, how am I going to know for sure??? When I heard him sing over the phone it didn’t sound like him? However, I should mention he was on his own for about 4 – 5 weeks in the wild. She said that he whistles a lot like a meadow lark. When we had him Sammie use to do the Wolf Whistle and Bob White. (she said he did that the first few weeks but she hasn’t heard it in awhile)
Will he remember me?? It’s been 2 months since he’s seen me. Anyone else ever lost a bird and then found him later. Did that bird remember you?? Guess I’m just really worried right now. I need some input.
By the way, he did not have a leg band.
And yes, if it is him I promise I will keep his wings clipped. I have 3 other cockatiels and their wings are clipped now. This was a horrible lesson learned.
I am going to get a cockatiel and i want to know as much about taking care of them as possible?

I am going to get a lutino Cockatiel if that helps.
