ive got a cockatiel too
it had baby like 6 times
and the first time it lay
we had to take care of the baby
and then after that the mother know what to do
and when the baby grew up and she layed egg (the mother)
the baby got very protective
so watch out
the may bit you
i am very sad when anyone mention cockatiel
Cuz’ we have to give the baby away for free
it because people keep on asking
and when we came back from the Gustav hurricane

Is getting my best friend a tame bird for her birthday a good idea?

Question by : Is getting my best friend a tame bird for her birthday a good idea?
My best friend currently has two guinea pigs (of which one is pregnant) but she used to have a cockatiel called Sunny. Sunny got sick and she was forced to watch it suffer (die) because her parents refused to take him to the vet. Her birthday has just gone past but I was wondering if I could buy her a tame bird (maybe a budgie or lovebird). I’m 13 so I don’t have a heap of money (only have $ 461) but she’s so special to me so I want to get her something she can love (like, literally). If I had a word with her mum, what would be the chances of her mum saying yes? She already has the food, the cage and toys. Also, what would MY mum say? She doesn’t really like me spending alot of money for other peoples birthday presents but this is my best friend. Do you think she’ll let me?
They refused to take Sunny to the vet because they said there’s no use, its too late. Or somethin like that. Its either a bird or a Supre voucher.

Sick love bird, that died? any ideas, i dont want my other ones getting sick. (Symptoms listed below)?

Question by courtney: Sick love bird, that died? any ideas, i dont want my other ones getting sick. (Symptoms listed below)?
she lost alot of feathers, down feathers. Over the weekend my housemate spotted her on the ground (they live in an aviary) sitting in the the rain. all the birds often spend time on the ground, stripping the grass for nesting material and picking up seed so i didn’t give it a second thought.

someone suggested she was egg bound, there is two nesting boxes in the aviary, one already has a bird and her 4eggs in it, the other box seems to be abandoned, as every time i add nesting material too it they pull it out and put it in the other one (so i gave up)

they were treated for worms about 2mths ago.

there was four love birds (3female, one male) and 2 cockatiels (both male) that live in the aviary, its about 3×1.5×2.5m. fairly big, and they have lived in it together since january, before that they all lived in cages (cockatiels in one, two love birds in two separate cages)

any ideas? i just dont want my other birds getting sick.
i’ve never seen them fight, ever, not even over the eggs or boxes

and in the last 24hrs she died, i check them in the mornings and i found her at the bottom of the cage this morning.

My fiance and I have 5 cats and it is getting very stressful for me. Any suggestions?

Question by opn_hrt06: My fiance and I have 5 cats and it is getting very stressful for me. Any suggestions?
For the first time since we’ve had all of them together-3 years- 3 of them have Upper Respiratory Infections. The vet bills for the past 2 days are outragious. We are getting ready to move to Chicago- probably into a smaller place. We currently live in a two bedroom house and also have 2 cockatiels. We love our cats dearly but I am getting a little bit overwhelmed.

I go to school full time and work part time and my fiance works full time. I feel like we just have too many animals. We absolutely love all of them but I am getting way too stressed between work/school/lack of money and crazy vet bills from them being sick. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I do realize that it is our responisbility to take care of all of them. However, we will go broke if this continues. I am very afraid that the 3 that are sick will infect the other two. All three have been to the vet and are on medication. We aren’t moving until August.
Sorry about adding the same details over and over- first time using this and didn’t know it keep the old details!

I’m getting a cockatiel for the first time… Any facts I should know?

Question by indierockon: I’m getting a cockatiel for the first time… Any facts I should know?
I found this bird at a pet store yesterday and it was the only one that let me pick it up. She fell asleep right on my finger and let me pet her for like ten minutes. She is plain white unlike the others and no one seems to want her because she’s “the ugly duckling.” I find her absolutely adorable. The other birds pick on her; biting at her and such. I asked the people the work there if she’s sick or anything but they said that she visited the vet a couple days ago and she’s fine. She seems to be depressed and I want to make her happy.

I plan on buying her tomorrow. Are there specific things I should know about cockatiels?

I’m getting a cockatiel but I don’t know if my mom would want to pay for the vet visits?

Question by ?: I’m getting a cockatiel but I don’t know if my mom would want to pay for the vet visits?
So I have been wanting a pet cockatiel for pretty much my entire life, and a few weeks ago my mom agreed to let me have one. I found someone that is wanting to rehome her bird, and I am seeing it tomorrow, and buying it if I like it. But then I just thought about how we’ll probably have to take it to an avian vet after we get it to make sure that it’s healthy, and that can get pretty expensive. I haven’t told my mom about this yet, and I’m afraid she won’t want to pay for it. I definitely can’t, because I don’t have a job and I barely have any money.
Also, if it turns out to be sick, what do I do? Should I complain to the previous owner or should I just wait until it gets better or what?
Please help!!

It sounds like you shouldn’t get the pet.If you can’t take the responsibility to get it taken care of, or the maturity to ask your mom to help pay for it.

I have had a cockatiel before this one but it flew away.

Right now I have:

- a cage (3ft tall and 2 ft wide)
-three dishes attached to the cage walls
-a single wooden perch through the middle of the cage
- a toy hanging from the top of the cage about 6 inches long
-a cuttlebone clip and cuttlebone
-food
- I will get a nice nrach from a tree to be another perch

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED??

what are somethings i can do to prepare for the new baby bird!?
I have already washed the cage thoroughly and the perch and toy and dishes

Keep an eye on it… make sure it is eating. Some babies when they are first weaned from hand feeding decide they aren’t quite ready to quit and will lose weight really quick. Just make sure you see him eating the seed… You could get some treats for him.. but looks like you have everything you need… You can get a spray bottle to spritz him once in awhile… it is real fun they love it.. they ruffle their feathers up and kinda do a strange dance while you spritz them..

Cockatiel that is constantly getting sinus infections and colds?

Question by Clumsical of the !MC! Squad: Cockatiel that is constantly getting sinus infections and colds?
I have a bird that has had three sinus infections and countless colds in the year and a half that I’ve had him. I can’t help but think I must be doing something wrong.

I have had *many* cockatiels, and none of them have gotten sick as many times as him. He is on a pellet diet, eats plenty of veggies, always has fresh water, has the paper changed on his cage daily, has his cage scrubbed down every week, etc. But he still gets sick all the time.

I know that some people are prone to sinus infections, but I have never heard of a bird being as prone. Never has it been very serious, usually just a lot of sneezing, inflamed nostrils, those kinds of symptoms; but it still worries me.

Is there anything I can do for him to keep him healthier, or is he just more prone to these infections than other birds?
@ crazy, he has been to the vet several times. The vet finally showed me how to tell the difference between a sinus infection and a cold, and said a cold is something that would be better to let him handle on his own.
I do take him out everyday, too. But I guess I don’t really make sure my hands are washed before I handle him, that could very easily be the problem.

Answer by crazy
Well, date back from the time you got him. In this year and a half, have you gotten a cold? You might have touched him, or he has probably touched something you sneezed on. You seem to be doing everything right, but do you take him out to play? Because alot of people had birds whose nostrils got flakey and once they took them out everyday, they felt better. another thing is don’t touch the bird too much. it could be that you are not washing your hands before/after you touch him.
But most of all, is your bird in a cold, drafty, air conditioned part of the house? It might be cold and it’s getting sick. but what you need to do is check the temp of the place he’s in. It shouldn’t be colder than room temp. Or it could be that he is allergic. also, take it to the vet. It will get too sick and will probably die :( Act fast. Ask your vet if you think it might be allergies, the temp, or even you. hope your cockatiel gets much better.
But his diet seems well.

I’m having some trouble getting my Cockatiel to eat fruits & veggies ?

Question by The Intrepid Elite: I’m having some trouble getting my Cockatiel to eat fruits & veggies ?
So, I’ve had my Cockatiel, Piper, for about two to three weeks now.. She’s friendly, cuddly, and as personable as it gets. She’s out of her cage ninety percent of the day, and is only put away when we need to go somewhere or when it’s time to go to bed. She’s always supervised, by the way. I’m no dummy. :]

My question is.. she eats Cockatiel formula food that has seeds, etc, whatnot in it, has cuttlefish (the flaky, oval-shaped block of.. hard-to-describe stuff that you hang in their cage?), and LOOOVES millet.. she’ll eat apples occasionally, loves potatoes, loves pasta, loves bread.. but I can’t get her to eat any fruits or vegetables ! I just offered her a grape, but she refused it. She doesn’t even try it ! She’s two years old, by the way, so I don’t know if her young age plays a part in it or not. How do I go about getting her to eat, or at least try, new fruits and veggies ?
By the way, I’ve tried to feed her broccoli, tangerines, clementines, peas, and most recently, grapes. I forgot to mention that she’s okay with peas, but it’s like apples: she’ll only eat them occasionally. All of my other attempts to feed her the aforementioned foods have failed miserably.

As she doesn’t seem to like them, try introducing them another time. My Cockatiel loves Cabbage, Cucumber, Lettuce, Banana, Apple, I also give my Cockatiel dried mixed fruit which you can get in a pack from ‘Pets at Home’. I pour some into a seperate bowl, or you can add some to its food.
