Websites to get bird food samples?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by Brit: Websites to get bird food samples?
I have 3 cockatiels.
Best answer:
Answer by ms bell
I found some web sites that give out pet bird food samples for your cockatiel:
http://birdbreeder.toplisted.net/products.php?category=Try+a+few+Samples
You can also call the manufacturers for samples of pellets for your cockatiel, such as Kaytee and Hagen. Here is a website for some phone numbers:

Hope that helps you out.

Can i feed parakeet food to my lovebirds?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by courtney: Can i feed parakeet food to my lovebirds?
So i have seven lovebirds and what I usually do is feed them food for lovebirds cockatiels and parakeets or something like that. the problem is that it has lots of sunflower seeds in it which is high in fat. usually give them about have of that and then we get another type of food that costs more but doesnt have sunflower seeds and has dried fruit. It costs too much to buy just that which is why i mix it. we got a diferent kind this time and its just for parakeets and im wondering if thats ok? im pretty sure weve used parakeet food before but im just not sure. And just so you know i feed them fruits and veggies everyday, i just cant leave the veggies in there when im at school which is why i need to feed them so many seeds. i know that you should feed them pellets but i dont know where to get them or how much they are so even if you know that it would help. I’ve had my lovebirds for a long time and im pretty sure that the parents wouldnt eat pellets, they refuse to eat anything new. but all their babies will im sure. well… i guess their not babies any more they’ll be two in may
lol they grow up so fast.

my new bird won’t eat out of the food dishes by itself!
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by lauren g: my new bird won’t eat out of the food dishes by itself!
they are really simple dishes and where i got my cockatiel the lady said it ate on its own… it will eat if it put the food dish or water dish right up to it so technically i am feeding it and giving it water by hand… and it knows where the food and water is… will it out grow this? or is something wrong?
Best answer:
Answer by Amber R
well ussually when it is young it doesnt know for itself where it is and how to eat by itself i just bought a parakeet about a week ago and it didnt know where the food was so we had to go back and by an older bird to show and teach it so maybe if your bird has a companion it will learn of how to eat by itself later on.
What do you think? Answer below!

How old are the babies? Did you pull the babies to handfeed? If so you need to use an approved handfeeding formula that is formulated with balanced nutrition to help the chick grow and thrive.
If the babies are still in the nest and the parents are feeding them an egg food supplement is OK to feed the parents and they’ll feed the babies but if their diet is balanced you shouldn’t need to ad vitamins.
If you don’t know what you’re supposed to feed a baby Cockatiel and you are trying to handfeed it you need to find an experienced breeder to teach you how, otherwise you could kill it.

food that zebra finches and cocaktiels love?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by Abs: food that zebra finches and cocaktiels love?
I have 2 cockatiels and 4 zebra finches and i want to give them more variation to their diet, except they don’t like fruit!
Ive tried them on apple, banana, pear, sultanas and they don’t eat it.
Any ideas on what i could try them on?
p.s. they have got a cuttle fish bone and a mineral block thing in with them so they have got a calcium source.
thanks in advance

NO, THIS ALSO WORKS FOR ZEBRA FINCHES. YOU NEED TO SERVE IT IN SMALLER PORTIONS.
I would recommend gradually introducing your tiels to a product called “Nutri-Berries” by Lafeber Co. This is the best food for all birds including tiels because they are made into a bunch of round balls that looklike natural berries that gives the birds good beak work and they can’t pick and choose what they want. It doesn’t leave a mess and they eat everything before you replace it. There are many choices in flavors and you can use them as either snacks or meals. Most of them are made of fruit, veggies with the proper portions of protein, fat, and Omega 3′s and 6′s. I only fed my tiels Lafeber products: “Classic Nutri-Berries” as their meal and “Avi-Cakes”, various kinds of veggie/fruit Nutri-Barries, bird popcorn and milletspray as snacks which got them used to the flavors when I was training them to eat healthier. I would advise cutting up only two-three types of small veggies and fruit and mix them in with your tiels food, or eat them at the same time and they may be interested inthem if you eat them with your cockatiel. It can take a year to get used to them, mine only started eating them after 7-8 months.www.Lafeber.com has really good information on their products, and they are the ones that started me off on getting my birds health to maximum! I have also tried hiding the food in/around my bird’s treats, and that will get them used to it more.
Fruits:
Apples
Pears
Peaches
Bananas
Berries
Kiwi
Pomegranate
Grapes
Before feeding your parakeets any fruits or vegetables, clean well! Most store bought fruits/veggies have pesticides on them which can prove to be lethal to your bird.
Veggies:
Carrots
Sweet Potatoes
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Bell Peppers
Beets
Legumes
Frozen Mixed Vegetables
Kale
Zucchini (and other squash)
Asparagus
Bean or Alfalfa Sprouts
Spinach
Brussels Sprouts
Again, make sure you clean well! Pesticides are used on store-bought vegetables and plants and can kill your bird.
Also, try cutting up the veggies or fruits into dices, long slices, or thin little strips. You can feed apple whole as long as you skin it. My birds love to shred apple! You can also feed them *plain* apple sauce! Also, make sure you remove the roots, pits, and seeds of the food you give them.
Foods You Should NEVER Feed:
Chocolate
Avocado
Sugary Foods
Salty Foods
Greasy Foods
High Fat Content Foods
Caffeine
Soda
Alcohol
Pits/Seeds/Roots of Fruits/Veggies
Candy
Rhubarb
Here is another list with more options:
Greens: Kale, Bok choy, spinach, chard, mustard greens, radish, carrot tops, beet tops, dandelion greens (make sure they haven’t been sprayed or collected near a roadway) and just about any other leafy green veggie.
Veggies: Carrots, peas, zucchini, corn, squash, radishes, bell pepper, broccoli, green beans, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, chili peppers.
Grains: Steamed rice (white, brown, wild) cooked pasta, whole wheat and multi-grain bread, popcorn (no butter), bran muffins, polenta, grits, cous cous, sprouted seeds and grains (quinoa, amaranth, millet, teff, kamut, spelt), oatmeal, all natural cereal.
Proteins: Raw sunflower seed (small amounts), chicken, eggs, fish, small amounts of hard cheese such as Jack and cheddar, tofu, cooked beans (lentil, kidney, black, garbanzo, navy, white).
Fruit: Apples (seeds removed), peaches, bananas, melons, mango, pomegranate, oranges, papaya, strawberries, plums, pears, berries, nectarines, cherries. (Please remove all pits from fruit.)
~!* Bell Pepper Ring Treat *!~
I use red, green, and yellow Bell Peppers for this recipe. I cut the Bell Pepper into little rings, or circle, so it looks like “O”. Make sure you take out all of the seeds, and make sure you wash it very well. Hang them around the cage, or put them in a bowl together and let your bird paly with them! They love to use them as necklaces, munch on them, and hold them on their food. This is a great, healthy, and very fun toy for your cockatiel!

Question by tazpion: Hey.I got 2 cockatiels and they always squabble over there single food dish!So i put another 1 in but…?
They STILL squabble over the 1st main food dish, even thou they have 2 food dishes to feed from! Anyone got any advice on why they still do this and how do i make them eat out of both dishes? Thanx.

Answer by Angela M
They probably do it because they both want to be “top bird” Take out the two dishes you have, buy two completely different looking dishes and put then in completely new locations. That should do the trick.

I Tried everything, but my cockatiels wont try new food groups.?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by TangTang: I Tried everything, but my cockatiels wont try new food groups.?
For the 2 years I have my tiels I fed them mixed seeds and a year later bird soil which one of them loves. They also have a cuttlebone and fresh green veggies everyday. I’ve tried everything recomended, but so far they still only eat the soil, mixed seeds and green veggie leaves. The first time she laid eggs the eggs they didnt hatch. Now they have 5 eggs with posstive signs. I worry that she doesn’t get enough nutrition to supply the coming chicks. I’ve tried many things including warming up the whole corn from the can and boiled egg yolk and various fruits. No luck. Please help.

Why don’t you ask if there is a local breeder you can talk to about it. Your vet would know or even your local show society as they have Bird shows through the year,or the local pet shop. Its worth a try. You can buy suppliments to add to the drinking water and there is an egg biscuit mixture you can make yourself with arrowroot biscuits(crushed finely) and egg yolk from a hard boiled egg mashed into it with a little water. I have used that on Canaries successfully. If you want you can get a commercially produced egg biscuit mix from the pet shop or vets.
