Letting a cockatiel out for the first time!?

Question by ` M <33: Letting a cockatiel out for the first time!?
Okay i want to let my cockatiel out of its cage for the first time o-O. I just got him like 3 days ago (3rd day starting today) he seems okay now, like he plays with his toys and moves around the cage a bit more. So umm this is the first time i’m letting a bird out and i don’t know what it will do. Will it jump and try to fly away (even though wings are clipped)? Can you tell your experience of letting a bird out for the first time ? Please? I’m very nervous

Believe it or not, having wings clipped could possible put him in more danger that if they had been left alone. It depends entirely on how skilled the person was who did the clipping. Because we, or at least I, don’t know, I do not recommend that you just open the door and let him go, just yet. You need to check for the safety of the clip. A proper clip is not intended, and should not, prevent them from flying. It should only prevent them from gaining altitude. A properly trimmed bird will still be able to fly/glide, for 15-20 feet, gradually losing altitude, and should be in control at all times. It should be able to make a controlled, balanced landing. If it cannot, then it’s either over clipped, or the wings don’t match, or both. To check this out, take your bird into a bedroom, hopefully with carpet. Under no circumstances, turn him loose from any height, over a hard floor. Release him from about waist high, over the bed and observe what kind of flight and landing he can make. Another thing is to sit him on the floor and allow him to realize that his wings are clipped. You want him to discover his limitation from ground level, not from up high. Cockatiels are particularly at risk of injury from improper clips because of how they land. They always land tail first. If they are over clipped, or out of balance, they will fall like a rock. The stiff tail feathers will hit first. The sharp upward bend will tear the skin near their vent. (Anus) This happened to one of mine, (clipped before I adopted it) and he immediately was pouring blood. If I had not been able to get him to the vet in about 15 minutes, he would have bled to death. Even so, he required IV fluids to save him and 4 stitches to mend the tear. Just be very careful until you determine how proper the clip is, and until you know he knows his limitations. If he does drop to fast or is not in control, then you will have no choice but to keep him caged until the flight feathers grow out. Then next time, either leave him fully flighted, or make sure the person doing the trimming knows what they are doing.

What should I do the first time I hold my cockatiel?

Question by krbowmaster: What should I do the first time I hold my cockatiel?
I adopted my first cockatiel three days ago. In a few days I want to let her explore her new home but I am really nervous about taking her out of her room (cage) for the first time. Anyone with advide on how to go towards her without scarying her, maybe giving steps? Also, will she most likely bite me the first time I pick her up and does a female cockatiels bite hurt? Thanks =]

Getting my first Cockatiel.?

Question by mark: Getting my first Cockatiel.?
I’m getting my first cockatiel this Saturday(IT BETTER NOT RAIN). It’ll be mostly an outside bird, but will come in when it’s cold and raining(or either or). I also have more questions.

1)How can I introduce my new cockatiel to my two not so tame parakeets. One’s female and the other’s male. I have a table and the two cages will be put next to each other on the table, but this will be after the quarantine. So how can I introduce them properly? How long should the quarantine be?(one month?)
2)Is “Ash” a nice ironic name for a cockatiel? As they release some dander so that’s where the irony comes in :P .
3)Do you think it’d be able to learn this song?-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzNQ4m2qn3I -I don’t expect to learn the whole song, but do you think it can learn to whistle the beginning of it? It’s pokemon (another source of irony :P )
4)What’s the best food brand for them? I read people feed theirs zupreem for parakeets, is that healthy?
5)I plan on getting a hand-fed tiel, but if I don’t, how can I tame it? How long should I wait to bond with my new bird?
6)How to discourage screeching, and how to get them not to fly away.
*****Thanks!!!*******
If I do get a hand-tamed cockatiel, would him/her being around my two not tamed parakeets make the cockatiel untamed?

Best answer:

Answer by Daniel R
If you get a tame bird, don’t put it in the same cage as the other birds. They are raised completely differently and the parrots will reject the cockatiel.

Call your bird whatever you want.

It could learn some of it yes.

Get a food brand that looks good. In Australia we have Trill. Zupreem looks healthy. It also depends on what the bird is currently eating. If you go from seed to pellets it wont work. You need a gradual transition.

If you don’t get a hand fed, tame bird your chances to taming it are near impossible. If its tame you can bond immediately. Birds are such social animals. I would advise getting 2 cockatiels for that reason. Theres only one up front cost.. the seed and care costs next to nothing anyways.

If you want a bird that can learn that song, get a male. It’s kind of a catch 22.. if you get a bird that will learn the song (male), it will be loud.. if you get a female.. it will be quiet and more than likely wont learn the song.

If you don’t want it to fly away then you need the wings clipped by a professional. DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF.

Unless you are handling the bird outside.. i wouldn’t advise it. It puts a lot of stress and discomfort on the bird.

P.s. after a while without bonding with you the bird will become un-tame.

My new Cockatiel won’t eat? Help please? *This is my first Cocktail bird*?

Question by Je rĂªve: My new Cockatiel won’t eat? Help please? *This is my first Cocktail bird*?
I recently bought a new Cockatiel yesterday and I noticed she hasn’t been eating, maybe she has eaten when we are not around. When I bought her the breeder did not tell us anything of what to feed her although I did see the food she had in her old cage which was sort of like what a budgie would eat except some bigger seeds. I have noticed though that yesterday and today that there are yellow and green-ish droppings in the cage (about 6 droppings today). What can I do so I know that she isn’t sick? And what are the signs that she is in fact eating food?. What kind of food can I give her?
Also she has been drinking water since I bought her yesterday as well as today. I just don’t think she has eaten anything.

Best answer:

Answer by Citrus S
Buy her a diff brand of food. Try to give her bread. And carrot or lettuce/spinach. Papayas work too. Try Kaytee brand. Or try giving her Fichte food. Or try lovebird or conure food. You can also try just an ordinary fortified cockatiel diet. How old is she? She might not be fully weaned if she’s young. If that’s the case contact your breeder or a local breeder. Her green droppings means that she hasn’t eating any solid food in 24 hours. Take her to a vet. IMMEADIATELY.

If I put a budgie and cockatiel together should i first buy 2 cages?

Question by cowzrkul05: If I put a budgie and cockatiel together should i first buy 2 cages?
I was asking about putting my cockatiel with a budgie. My cockatiel is young just a couple months old. i was told if i wanted my tiel with a budgie I should first introduce them before letting them share a cage. Does this mean I should buy a second cage for the budgie or just let my tiel meet the keet right when it bring it home? I am kind of confused. So my main question is – should i buy a second cage before letting them share one?

Best answer:

Answer by Jordan S
DONT PUT THEM IN THE SAME CAGE. They may attck each other. Also, they both eat differnet food. You can keep a lovebird or a parrotlet with a cockatiel since the all eat cockatiel food. Budgies should always be kept with their own since no bird has similar care rules.

How do I get my Cockatiel out of his cage for the first time to go to the vet???

Question by Theo A: How do I get my Cockatiel out of his cage for the first time to go to the vet???
I just bought a male 7 or 8 month old cockatiel from a pet store. He has been pretty nice to me so far, I think because I am spoiling him. Even in the three days I’ve had him, he’s already eating millet out of my fingers at a close distance and rarely makes a big fuss when I’m messing around in his cage. My question then is pretty silly. I really want to take him out of his cage, and begin building our relationship. For that to work best, and to make sure he is healthy, I want to take him to a vet for a check-up and wing trimming. How do I effectively take him out of his cage without making him too upset or hurt? This would be his first time out of the cage and his wings have never been clipped before. At least not since I’ve had him. Any help is much appreciated!!
What I am afraid of is letting him out of his cage because his wings are not clipped and he will hurt himself. I can’t see myself being able to successfully towel him inside his cage. And I don’t want to just grab him…not sure what to do..

Best answer:

Answer by Akari
Your best bet is to wrap him in a towl. This will prevent the bird from thrashing around and possibly injury itself. Once you have him in the towl, it’s best if you put him in a small crate. This will help with the transport and hopefully minimize the stress to him.

first time cockatiel owner?

Question by Anto: first time cockatiel owner?
I have a female cockatiel just over a year old who regurgitates her food and chews it and swallows it…is that normal? I’m a first time bird owner and have had her about 2 weeks now..

Best answer:

Answer by Parrots
Yes, while not exactly the nicest thing to watch, this is entirely normal!

A cockatiel, male or female, regurtitates its food to feed its mate, and its young. If she is doing this when she is with you, she may have bonded with you already, and considers you her mate :)
