Young male cockatiel not eating?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by Wanda B: Young male cockatiel not eating?
Hi, i am at a loss.
I have 4 cockatiel
2 male 2 female. 2 of them are brother and sister
which i raised from eggs.
I was given a male who wasn’t all that friendly and under weight but i figured as time passed he would adjust.
He did for about a year.
Recently I noticed Ricky ( the unrelated brother) chasing him around the cage.
This was very unusual as alll 4 got along very well.
I looked the situation over and to my amazement Buddy
(the gift bird) was very skinny. I took imediate action and got some fluids into his system.
I have been hand feeding him as i did the young chicks-by syringe – pureed eggs and chick food.
Along with anitbotics and a water solution.
He has little choice to eat this way but on is own barley eating. ,..As the saying goes “not enough to keep a bird alive”.
Has anyone had such a situation and may be solution?

Question by mithamour2: How do i stop my cockatiel from eating her baby!?
Every time i put my female cockatiel with the baby she starts biting it and then the baby starts to bleed. the dad is just sitting there and the mom keeps going at it. Every time i look up there is blood on the the females beak. we don’t have enough money for a cage so they are just sitting in my room right now flying around. Also they have the eggs and the one baby behind my trophies so i need to have an answer!!!!

how old is the baby? after about 3 weeks you need to remove the baby bird away from its mom, and put it in a different cage, or else this is what happens

Was just given cockatiel. It is eating like 4 different colored blocks of … something? Strawberry flavor?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by Bridgette J: Was just given cockatiel. It is eating like 4 different colored blocks of … something? Strawberry flavor?
So I just inherited a Cockatiel and he has like a ton of stuff in his cage in fact way to much stuff for him to move around freely and he eats these flavored blocks. I have no idea what they are… what are they. He has a white one, green, red, and yellow. She told me one is strawberry flavored. He doesn’t seem to eat food he just licks on these blocks all day long it’s very strange. Also how long should I wait before I start adjusting his environment I don’t like the set up at all. He needs more room ot walk around and I might upgrade him to a flight cage. I don’t know how long it takes a cockatiel to settle in though. I have a Cockatoo and she is entirely different from this little tiny bird.

first of all the coloured blocks that are in his cage should be taken out because they are probably full of colours that may harm the bird it is alright letting him have them occasionally but he should make sure he has a normal rich in fruit veg and seed diet as you want to keep your new bird healthy.
Let your bird settle in for a day but spend a lot of time with him and then start taking stuff out because it can be a risk hazard having too much stuff in there. Make sure that your cockatiel bonds with you first and not your other bird and also if you let them both our of their cage at the same time be careful as your big cockatoo make nip and bully your little cockatiel.
hope this helps

Cockatiel not eating after 3 days of getting him, dark green watery poo?
Category: Cockateil Food Q&A
Question by SunConure: Cockatiel not eating after 3 days of getting him, dark green watery poo?
I got a Cockatiel 3 days ago. He is between 6 months to a year old, the breeder had 2 1/2 sets of babies in the same cage and didn’t know the ages of each. He is wild and very scared of me although I think he is warming up. He did eat half a cheerio from between my fingers though the bars but that is all he has ate. I made sure I got the same pellets the breeder was feeding them, gave him another bowl of veggies/fruit, a third bowl of seed and 2 strings of millet and I see no evidence that he has touched anything, not even the millet. I did witness him drinking water though. He has pooped recently but it to me does not look normal, at least compared to my budgies. It is dark green and very watery. Nothing solid in the mix, or sometimes just a light green stain on the paper towls on the bottom. I’ve tried giving him lots of privacy, quiet warm room, sheet over 3 corners of the cage and still nothing. I’m really worried about him but my avian vet is booked up until next Tuesday. What is the longest he can go without food?

Birds do need to eat. Does he know where the food is? Sometimes if the bird is not used to the type of bowls or dishes you put in there they are scared to eat out of it. Sometimes cockatiels do poop like that but i would watch to make sure it doesn’t happen every time. I would limit the amount of time you are reaching into the cage because it will scare him more. Also, until you can take him to the vet try putting seed in one of his dishes. Cockatiels love seed because it tastes good to them. That should help him get by until next tuesday.
