Question about what my cockateil (bird) can eat?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by Rachel: Question about what my cockateil (bird) can eat?
I have 2 cockatiels….the boy (name is Duncan) and the girl (name is Anastasia) LOVE LOVE LOVE Ritz crackers.
Can i keep feeding that to them? I looked it up on Google and some people say yes,it perfectly OK as long as you dont give them to many….then other people say no because they can die?
That is only a treat they each get 1 cracker a day?….But when they see the wrapper they go crazy! They scream, and jump around in their cage.
So if i go low sodium or no salt crackers can they have more than one?
Why is it so bad to give the crackers? Cuz you always heard that saying “Polly want a cracker” and Polly was a bird?
Thanks for all you help~Rachel

I don’t think there is something inherently bad about saltine crackers, but it it probably best to give your birds a varied diet. Other treats you can try feeding them include milk, lunch meat, fruit, cuttlefish bone, etc.

my 13 year old cockateil flew into a window and is completely different now, in every way.brain injury?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by Carolyn K: my 13 year old cockateil flew into a window and is completely different now, in every way.brain injury?
his chirping is lower, muffled and not him. he keeps falling forward and is hanging out on the bottom of his cage and is unsteady on all 5 of his perches.
i did take him to an exotic pet vet and he said his toe was injured but his manner has completely changed. i am soo scared he is brain damaged. the vet said he was fine. and the vet is the only one in my area that would even see him.
he is puffy feathering and is not active. he is hanging out in the same spot also. i am keeping him quiet and warm. i dont know what else to do.

Maybe he has internal bleeding in his brain. I would go get that checked out by his vet, if he has one.

Patience=Trust.
If there is a mirror in the cage they become very fond of themselves and never want to leave the cage, thus, the reason for the thrashing.

why does my cockateil have sticky smelly poop?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by Kylie B: why does my cockateil have sticky smelly poop?
this has been going on for a good five months and we have been to the vets twice on the first visits he was given an antibiotic which didn’t work, we were then given a second antibiotic which was supposed to be stronger than the first, that didn’t work either, then he/she was wormed even though there didn’t seem to be an infestation on the slide, so i have continued giving fresh seed (not from supermarket) cleaning the cage twice a week small amounts of fresh veggies, Every day i bath him to clean the vent which the poop is becoming very, very smelly, not pleasant at all. twice now i have seen what looks like a piece of elastic, clear in colour and about an inch long .. he seems well enough looks wise, whistling and still learning new tunes, any help would be extremely appreciated

Answer by Hana Panda
that really sounds strange, your bird is acting normally?
You should go back to the vets an tell them about this. It may be that your bird is eating something that it is having trouble digesting.
do you let Your bird out and wander round? the bird may have eaten something there it shouldn’t have. That may be it
Hope he bird gets better soon! x

How old is she? That is the coloring of a female, but males who haven’t had their first molt also look like that. If your bird has already molted, then it’s very likely that she is a female.

Why is my cockateil biting? I don’t want him to learn its ok….Help!?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by Mrith: Why is my cockateil biting? I don’t want him to learn its ok….Help!?
I have just gotten a 6-7 week old cockatiel and he has been great except that he has a habit of nipping at my hand, and recently my face when I have him cuddling up on my chest as I pet him.
I don’t know how I can discorage him from doing this with out haveing to put him in his cage after he does something “Bad” because I don’t want him to think of his cage as a punishment or a bad place.
What should I do? How do I stop this behavor before it becomes a problem? The fingers don’t hurt because he is still young but I fear that the behavor will become a problem if it is not stoped at his young age. He is 6-7 week old, is this normal for a bird his age?

Best thing to do is to is discipline him while he’s young.
Spray him with water or you could just yell at him.
Just don’t let him develop bad habits.

Cockateil breeding question…?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by i_adore_horses: Cockateil breeding question…?
Ok I have had one of my birds for a couple years now. I wanted her to breed with my male but he was very attached to me (actually would hump my hand) so he had no interest in her. Unfortunately he and my other female died from a bacteria brought in by a baby bird I tried to save (no contact but in the same room. I know I’m a horrible pet owner. I feel guilty every day) So since his death, after she went through antibiotics, I bought two more cockatiels. She seemed to really be hitting it off with one of them. They were doing the breeding chatter and everything. But she has suddenly bonded with me. I take them all out every day but she has become obsessed with me (like my male was). I have also been opening the nesting box every day so they’ll be used to me doing that and I think that it has just confused her even more. Now every time I walk into the room she runs up to the box and does her breeding chirp. And she now wants nothing to do with the male in the cage. They clean each other but that’s about it.
Sooo….my question is this… have I totally ruinned their chances of breeding? Or is there a way to get her less interested in me. I don’t want to stop socializing with them. Any thoughts?

I have the same problem. Unfortunately, I think the only answer is to stop paying attention to her. I have a big walk-in flight cage, and every time I would go in there she would be all over my shoulders and would fly to me and clean my teeth and my hair. i separated her with a male I wanted her to pair with and I think it may be working, but i dont know.
I do know that if it does work she will still always love you because she is very bonded to you now.
Good luck and Im sorry about your previous birdies, some times we have to learn the hard way, I know I have on different occasions. Its unfortunate, but you did have good intentions. you just have to learn from your mistakes.

Baby Cockateil help!?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by J: Baby Cockateil help!?
My cockateils had two babies. One is 5 days and one is 7 days. I asked a local breeder for advice, because this is the first time eggs have hatched.
They were laid, and hatched in the corner of the cage and she said to put them in a small cardboard box with shredded newspaper in the cage to prevent the chicks from getting “Spread leg”. I did and the younger one was pushed to the other side of the box. It looks like the crop is full, but the parents ar not sitting on it and its not near the other baby. Is there anything I should, or can do?? The breeder didn’t say anything about this happening. Would it be to early to hand feed? What can I do? I almost feel like the breeder was trying to “sabotage” or something.
Best answer:
Answer by Beverly
Don’t panic. Parents sometimes let the chicks wander to different parts of the nestbox. They do not need to sit on the baby all the time. It sounds like they are feeding it since the crop is full. They will go back and take care of the baby. I have bred cockatiels for 30 years. It is not necessary to feed the chick unless the parents will not continue the feeding. As the baby gets older it will wander even more. This is natural. As the chick gets older they do not feed it as frequently. Let nature take its course. Good luck with the new babies….

my cockateil broke his leg.. help
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by !: my cockateil broke his leg.. help
he broke his leg about 15 days ago.
he has been pecking at it and now its almost completely off.
i had him in a cat box because the vet said it would be best, but i hoped that putting him back in his cage would make him happier and stop him from taking the cast off…
to sum it up.. i have a few questions:
1.is it ok for the bird to perch with his broken leg?
2.would the vet replace the cast free of charge?
3.would it be best to put him back in the cat box?
thanks so much
