harness training sparky, my cockatiel

i got the aviator harness almost a year ago and am still trying to train him to like it! he is ok with it i guess, but could be better. i can touch him with it if he is eating but otherwise he is a bit shy of it… can anyone give me some advise for teaching a difficult bird how to wear the aviator harness? (he tolerates being pet on the back and head, but hates being grabbed) thanks. (constructive critisism is welcome) and at 1:32, he is looking at my top light

Any cockatiel training tips?

Question by Petra: Any cockatiel training tips?
Okay so I got a cockatiel about 5 weeks ago, she is verry attached to me and I’ve thaught her some tunes and words , but the only thing I’d really like to teach her is to trust me enough to sit on my hand. I just want to train her to do that so I can let her fly around once ina while. I’ve been putting my arm in the cage everyday for a few weeks and she’s fairly used to me in there so, any tips?:)

what you can do is out a finger under her breastbone and gently push while saying either “up” or “step up”. The process of trust takes time, the bird will open up when it is ready.

You have a couple of things going. First the birds are in the same cage so they are bonded to each other and not to a human. If they have been together a long time – it is probably best to leave them together. Separating them may just upset them more. Second they are in a new environment and are still adjusting to that. They can be tamed, but it will take a little work. You are doing good by talking to them regularly.

It sounds like their wings are not clipped. You might want to have them clipped to prevent them from flying away while they are being tamed.

Open the cage and let them come out on their own (with you sitting there to supervise). It would be ideal if you could work with one at a time, but don’t know if you can.

When you want the bird to step up – make sure you are offering the backside of you hand – laid out flat – for him (them) to step up on and not just a finger. Use the actual words “step up” as you put your hand out.

If you cannot get him to step up, you can take a wash cloth or small towel and wrap it around his body so only his head is sticking out (like swaddling a baby). This will keep him from flying away or attacking you. You can start by just talking to him while he is swaddled and then move on to trying to pet/caress him. You may have to do this several times, but once he starts to settle down – you will be able to hold him without the towel. We use the towel trick for taming as well as for clipping nails and wings.

Try not to use a stick if you can help it – it often just upsets them more.

Pearl clicker training 1 – trust exercise sucess!

This is how you do a trust exercise with your cockatiel TIP: get millet and a clicker Step 1. bring your finger over toards the bird (start from a further distance) Step 2. If the bird bites, hisses or moves away dont give a treat and move away from the bird ( try again (same distance)) Step 3. If your bird stops and becomes calm then click the clicker and give a treat Step 4. Keep getting a bit closer to your bird Step 5. Keep rewarding your bird for being calm and patient *Remeber all birds are different and have different personalities and this might take a longer time to acheive* This movie was staring PEARL! Clicker Training: Kiwi Cockatiel puts money in the bank

We remain responsible forever of what we have tame. dont forget it!! dont buy bird, ADOPT! Comments and Rating welcome !!! Kiwi learned how to put cents in a bank. The hole in the bank is not straight, so it’s more difficult. Usualy I congratulate her after each one, but this time I did’nt say a word, and she just added one after the other until, she’s stop and look at me; “It is OK? or what?” IMPORTANT: I dont use real money, because it’s dangerous for metal poisoning. I use plastic ones found at the dollars store.

HELP! I need someone to give me advice on caring and training my cockatiel?

Question by Michelle P: HELP! I need someone to give me advice on caring and training my cockatiel?
I have an 8 year old male cockatiel named Buddy. Buddy has been in my life since he was one. Sadly, I never could get him trained. Everytime I tried, I got too busy and gave up. Now I really want to get him used to me handeling him. For the past three days I’ve been getting him out of his cage for about 20 min twice a day (once in the morning and once in the late afternoon) Everytime I get him out, he freaks out, hisses and bites me. He hates when I touch him, and always flutters out of my hand.

He’s a sweet bird inside his cage. He sings to his mirrors, and when I whistle, he whistles back. But as soon as I get him out, he freaks.

I also have some questions about diet and health. Buddy seems a bit thinner to the cockatiels at the pet store. I feed him cockatiel seed, seed treats, and these little brown seed things that hang on a branch that I buy in the pet store. I tried adding fruits, vegtables, and pasta to his diet but he won’t eat it. I’m worried for him.

If you can give me any advice, set me up on a plan, anything! answer back or heres my email

Try taking him out of the cage and rather than handling him, take him inside your house and let him do his own thing (his wings will need to be clipped – that is the best way to train a bird). You may want to buy a parrot play gym to keep him entertained (and in one place!). Try to feed him treats by hand, do things that will cause your hands to be near him but not necessarily touch him. Eventually, you can try to give him a pat but don’t make a big deal of it, if he freaks, pretend you were doing something else. Eventually he’ll get used to having you around and he’ll come to know that your hands grabbing him out of the cage means good things – a bit of freedom, some treats and, eventually, pats!

Good luck :)

Training a Cockatiel “Step Up”

this is how you train a cockatiel to step up. This also works for lovebirds, and other birds as well. Many people have asked why doesn’t their canary/finch step up Respond: Finches, canaries are not suppose to step up. Although for odd reasons finches are near the price of parakeets, and canaries are expensive. They don’t step up. They just make you bored out of your mind except if really enjoy watching your bird fly around.
