Cheap cockatiel cages?

Question by lad32990: Cheap cockatiel cages?
On weekends in the summer, my family seasonal camps in Maine. Due to the fact that we are gone for more than 24 hours at a time, my pet cockateil comes with us. Unfortunately he also comes with quite a bit of luggage. So this year instead of bringing everything back and forth, like we did last year, I would like to buy a separate cage that will stay in Maine. Our camper is 40 ft long, however it tends to get crowded with all of us in it. Therefore I need to buy a cage that is cockatiel size appropriate, but not huge at the same time. Because it will only be used on the weekend, I don’t want to spend a lot of money if possible. Which brings me to my question. How small can the cage be, without it being too small for a cockatiel?
P.S.
Dimensions would be great!

I wouldn’t use anything smaller than 18″Wx18″Dx20″H.
I have a recommendation. Prevue Pet Products makes a very basic square cage which would be suitable for a cockatiel and weekend travel. It’s called the Econo-1818.

I own four of these – I only use them for medical emergencies and temporary shelter, but they would be suitable for motor home or camper travel.
You can’t buy direct from Prevue, you’ll need to go to a distributor. I bought mine through Future Pets (Dallas, TX) for less than each. They don’t list them on their site, but they are a Prevue distributor and accept special orders.

I have been told it’s very bad health to keep pet birds, in their cages in your living space, is this true?

Question by Meleah: I have been told it’s very bad health to keep pet birds, in their cages in your living space, is this true?
I have been told by a friend, that i should not keep my pet birds, in their cages in our living room. Because we can easily contract diseases such as Psittacosis just from breathing in their feathers/feather dust etc. I clean out their cages often and they are never kept in filth etc. We have a budgie and two cockatiels. We are getting a handraised Eclectus parrot and a cinnamon green cheek conure. They will all have their own space and own cage. Which will live in our loungeroom. As you can probably tell, im a big time bird person.
Hi there,,
she is studying nursing actually, and was informed in a lecture about it. I don’t think she is a bird person at all.
I regularly change their paper, clean it out and when im home all the windows are open to let in fresh air.

I suppose it’s OK as long as the feathers and stuff don’t get in your food. And remember common sense with birds like cleaning, and you’ll be fine. And is your friend even a bird person? They could be a nurse but how much do they really know about birds? Anyways, research about it and ask around your vet’s office and stuff to get the facts. Also, this disease is curable, so you shouldn’t worry.
