Question by grs: parakeet budgerier, parrotlet, cockatoo, cockateil, eclectus, which one?
are cockatoo’s and cockateils the same?
i’m buying a bird for the first time, so i have no experience and dont know anything about birds. all the responses ive gotten for my questions are mixed. i narrowed my list down to 5 birds. I need one that wont have a strong bite so itll be safe for kids to handle them. They have to be pretty social because all the pets i’ve had have been very interactive with the family. also i live in an apartment, i dont want one that is VERY loud before 9, and after 10pm, so it wont wake up the neighbors. also one that can be tamed and that likes to be around people. any helpful tips on any of the five birds would be helpful. thanks.

You really don’t want a large parrot as a first bird. They are capable of bad bites, and many, especially cockatoos are very very loud screamers. A budgie, cockatiel or green cheek conure make great first birds. Get a baby and handle gently.

How to stop cockateil plucking his mate?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by G K: How to stop cockateil plucking his mate?
I have 11 cockateils. In one pair ( who are partners), the male keeps plucking the feathers of the female. She bleeds occassionally and I apply Kwik Stop. She is half bald on her back and today I found her bleeding profusely ( he had plucked a blood feather). I applied Kwik Stop and she stopped bleeding but what else can I do apart from putting them in separate cages? ( He will shriek when he cant see her or isnt next to her). Is there a spray I can use on her to stop him from plucking her?
Appreciate all responses

you need to remove her from his cage and put her in a seperate cage. This is an aggressive behavior and if you don’t seperate them he could kill her. Put her cage next to his to keep him calm.

show her u r responsible
get all the information u can about the bird.on line, at the library, lay the books out so she can see then and read all about them tell her every time u read something cool about the birds, read it out loud to her.
step up and take extra good care of the pets u already have. dont be childish about it be sincere.

What’s the funniest things your cockateil does?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by thetakeover83: What’s the funniest things your cockateil does?
My cockatiel George is hilarious. He plucked out most of my Dad’s eyebrow while he was asleep. Haha.
it’s impossible to pick him up because he demands headscratches. He also likes it if you rub his eye which is gross because you can feel it!
He also likes to lean over the edge of his cage and nine times out of ten he falls on the ground and looks ashamed.
One time our dog came inside and we forgot George was out and hurried to the lounge room as we heard a lot of flapping and squwarking. As it turns out he was having a great time riding around on the dogs back trying to rip out her neck hairs!

my male cockatiel Clyde sings the puppy power off of scooby doo, and my female Bonnie hangs upside down and flaps her wings.

Is there anyway to keep my cockateil off the ceiling fan?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by thetakeover83: Is there anyway to keep my cockateil off the ceiling fan?
I know cockateils chew everything, but we are renting, and he always flies up on the fan and chews all the decorative weaving sort of stuff and the bands around the fan ruining them- we don’t want to pay for a new fan!
Is there anything we can do to keep him from getting up there in the first place? I have tried putting plastic bags on the blades hoping he would slip off or something, have tried yelling no, always grabbing him off and puttting him in another room… nothing works.
I have accidently discovered that if you turn the fan on, he still tries to climb aboard and gets knocked around, so obviously this is not the solution!!!
And I can’t move him to another room as our living areas are open plan (no doors) and if he is left in his cage or in a room in another room of the house he screams and screams!
Please help!
His wings are clipped, but he can still fly a little. (not something I would have done, the breeder had already done it when we picked him up)
I haven’t heard of a deterrent spray, I will look into it thanks.

Clip his wings. I know that sounds cruel but it may be the only way.
