Pet Bird Clicker Training 101

Clicker training is a good way to teach your bird tricks and teach them to come to where you want them. You’ll need a chopstick or small stick, a clicker (from a petstore), and a treat like millet. Hold the chopstick in front of your bird. He will get curious and touch it with his beak. Click the clicker and give him a treat, and soon he will learn to touch the end of the stick wherever you place it.

Clicker training #4 – Fly to me

Pumpkin fly’s to me i only tried this once b4 i recorded it (9 month old cockatiel) I have him for 89 days it’s been 16 days since he 1st sat on my hand TIPS: To do this you need once again a clicker and some treat STEP 1 Get your bird to trust you and stand on your hand *you can see that in my video: (Clicker training #2 – trust exercise) STEP 2 Get him to sit on your hand and stay there *you can see that in my video: (Clicker training #3 – sitting on my hand) SETP 3 Finally when the bird is comfortable make him takes small steps from the cage to your hand/ fingers, then make him jump to you, and finally fly Keep going back gradually, so it won’t be a huge distance for the bird and it won’t be intimidating or discouraging

how do i teach my cockatiel to do tricks with the clicker?

Question by pitbull: how do i teach my cockatiel to do tricks with the clicker?
I’ve been trying target training with my cockatiel and a clicker but it just touches the target stick once and then it doesn’t do it again. It just wants the treat. What is some good advice on teaching my cockatiel tricks.

It’s really pretty much the same process with any animal. If you’re not getting repetitions of the behavior, think about the following, and see if any apply:

- make sure you are giving a treat after every successful touch — even if you forget to click, give a treat.

– maybe the reward you are offering is not high enough value to the bird, or is something you give freely at other times. Reserve something extra-special only for training. If that gets old-hat, switch to something else.

- if it’s a food treat, it may take so long to eat that the bird doesn’t get the point – treats need to be something the animal can gulp right down, and still be hungry and ready for more training

- something about what’s happening around the bird (the social pressure of you staring, expecting something, being in an unusual place, the target stick, the sound of the clicker?) may be off-putting enough that it’s distracting the bird or countering the value of your reward

- you may be holding the treat too close, making it a strong distraction/temptation — try keeping it off of your body, even at arm’s length or held by someone else a few feet away (just make sure the bird can’t get to it!)

– hold the target stick far away from the clicker and the treats, and try moving it around in ways that might intrigue your bird — getting some accidental touches that get clicked and rewarded might get your bird looking away from the treats, and understanding that it’s all about doing something with that stick.

- shape the behavior, if needed — click and treat for any orientation toward the stick at first.

- don’t insist — if the bird isn’t getting it after a few minutes, take the treats and walk away, then try again later. Cockatiels can be food-motivated, sociable and easily bored, so your “you snooze, you lose – I’m leaving” behavior might inspire more interest the next time.

Clicker training with my cockatiel part 2

This is my wf dominant silver cockatiel going round. The word I’m using is “Pyƶri” (=”Spin!”). First we were practising doing only one round but when filming another video Wryy made actually one extra round after the clicker sound. And so I took the trick even further – and this is how it goes now. Bit by bit I make the hand move less visible and aim to the point where the hand move is no longer needed.

Clicker training #3 – sitting on my hand

today was the 1st day Pumpkin sat on my hand (its been 72 days since i had him) (hes 8 months old) TIP: *its good to practice with your bird to touch your hand first and get use to him/her standing on it befoure doing this exercise …its all about building TRUST* check my Clicker training #2 -trust exercise once your bird is ok with your hand, you can move on.. Get a treat and lead your bird to your hand – each step closer he/she takes click the clicker and give the treat – keep bringint the treat closer to your hand – keep using the clicker and giving a treat – do this a couple of times and he/she will get use to it

clicker training #2 – trust exercise

im trying to get him on my hand and walk on my arm a bit closer to me hes still a bit scared of my hand and he never sat on my hand on his own (i tied this only 2 other times but i had bad video) so this is me getting him slowly to trust me and for each step he takes closer to me i reward him with food .. – but i only click the clicker when hes touching my hand -and i let him eat the food for a bit longer TIP: – to do this you tease him with food -for each step closer he takes towards you, reward the bird with food – keep bringing him closer and closer till he touches you – use the clicker (something that makes click noise) when the bird touches you ***repeat this activity for a few days***
