Will my Cockatiel Bird be Okay if Left Alone in the House a Few Days?
Category: Cockateil Training Q&A
Question by Ty: Will my Cockatiel Bird be Okay if Left Alone in the House a Few Days?
We are leaving on family emergency for about a week tops. Our Cockatiel is trained and two years old. Unfortunately he can’t come with us but we bought extra food and water containers so he wont starve and die of thirst. Has anyone done this before?
Please help… What do I need to know?

I have done this before, and my Cockatiel was fine. The only thing he will miss is your attention.

BIRD THAT IS TOTALLY TOILET TRAINED 001.MOV
Category: Cockateil Toys Videos
I have a sun conure parrot that I trained to go to the toilet every morning for his big dump. I learned the hard way that they hold their poop all night and in the morning they dump huge. Well I got tired of being dumped on so I trained him to do it in the toilet. Now, he will wait forever just to do it in the toilet. He is so cute

BIRD LOVERS: Cockatiel’s strange habits..help or advice?
Category: Cockateil Toys Q&A
Question by Sam: BIRD LOVERS: Cockatiel’s strange habits..help or advice?
I have a 14 year old lutino cockatiel named Sunny. He has some strange habits, and i wonder what that could be attributed to. He used to sit up on his perch quite a bit, but when he was younger, i would catch him sitting at the bottom of the cage, kind of in a daze, and if you tried to get his attention or go anywhere near him–god forbid you stick your hand in the cage– he would charge at you, hiss, and try to bite you. This would be every once in awhile, but in the past 6 months, i’ve been noticing him doing this a lot more. He still climbs on his perch, plays with his toys, and eats, but he has been spending about 60 percent of his time at the bottom of the cage. I do leave his door open so he could come to the top of the cage and hang out, and he’s usually okay when he’s perching or on the top of the cage, but when he is on the bottom he is aggressively territorial and VERY cranky. Has anybody had this problem before? and is this a sign of anything serious? I worry because he is old, but otherwise he seems okay.

he seems to just be guarding his territory, picked a private area, perhaps now he is older he has staked more of a claim to “this is my area, stay out , leave me alone” try relate it to a person in the bathroom vs the living room- same house but one area is off limits to “visits “and the other isn’t. if you have kids its easier to understand what i mean. as long as he is “normal” in all other ways it doesn”t seem to be a health issue, the only health related issue i can think of is how are the condition of his toes, nails and pads? you could try changing the perching sticks, they may be worn,a bit used, and perhaps a bit thicker ?

What is your favorite activity to do with your cockatiel/parakeet/any other bird?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Question by iheartanimals: What is your favorite activity to do with your cockatiel/parakeet/any other bird?
Just wondering because I need more things to do with my cockatiel to prevent him from being bored everytime he comes out of the cage. Anything will do, but possibly something easy to get/make/do with household items.
Also, how do I get him to eat his vegetables and fruits? He doesn’t eat them even when I eat them in front of him.
Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey here are some things i like to do with my parakeet
- make it climb up my shirt
- talk to it in one pitch and repeat something and the bird will soon learn how to speak
- put it on your shoulder when you are doing something, my parakeets enjoy the ride
if you want your cockatiel to eat fruits and veggies, then you have to have some patience, put some in thier seed container. the birds will soon get used to this.

It is too small. A cage should be the biggest you can afford, and a minimum 18X18X24. Also, the bar spacing should not be too big – at a maximum 3/4 of an inch.
EDIT: Mama said it much more politely than I would have. I didn’t want to bring it up because I had some pretty choice words to say to the idiot who thought it would be good to cram 5 birds into a cage I wouldn’t even keep a pet rock in!

Pet Bird Clicker Training 101
Category: Cockateil Toys Videos
Clicker training is a good way to teach your bird tricks and teach them to come to where you want them. You’ll need a chopstick or small stick, a clicker (from a petstore), and a treat like millet. Hold the chopstick in front of your bird. He will get curious and touch it with his beak. Click the clicker and give him a treat, and soon he will learn to touch the end of the stick wherever you place it.
