Take cockatiel to regular animal vet?

Question by Topaz: Take cockatiel to regular animal vet?
Okay, I’m planning on getting a cockatiel really soon and I think I have it all figured out. I’m fourteen, but my parents agreed to help me pay for the costs of keeping a bird. I’m going to get a nice big cage, I researched what they should be eating, I’ll get nice toys, perches, all of that stuff. There’s one thing I’m not sure about, though: vet care. I looked up local avien vets and the closest one is more than an hour away! I don’t think my parents would take me there. Do you think that a local vet, like one that treats cats and dogs, can treat birds as well? At least give them a checkup every once an a while? Is it necessary to take them to the vet? I think that it is. Please help?
If I thought there was something seriously wrong with my bird, I would make my parents take the long drive. They would do it if I really thought I needed to. I’m just wondering if a regular vet (my nearby vet that I take my dog to says they treat birds) could give a basic checkup when I first get my bird.

The best thing for you to do is to call the various vets close by to ask if they treat cockatiels. Hopefully, you’ll NEVER have to take your pet to the vet because it is VERY costly. By doing this, at least you’ll have a phone number and address ready in case you need to go to the vet rather than panicking and trying to find out the information while you are upset.

Knowing how to properly care for your bird, such as keeping it’s flight feathers trimmed and proper nutrition, should prevent situations from arising where a costly trip to a vet is required.

need small animal?

Question by joelkrause57: need small animal?
Ok well i live in Australia and my parents are sick to death of all these interest rate hikes and are really sick of paying mortage and ****** so we’ve decided that we will sell the house and rent…but the thing is most wont let you have animals like dogs and cats, and of course we have 3 cats and 2 dogs and about 17 fish(in aqaurium) and a cockatiel. we realise we wont be able to take these animals with us (with the execption of the fish maybe even the bird) so i need a small animal that can fit in a tank or cage..im ****** scared of snakes and spiders and lizards so none of them, anything but them….

any ideas?

Peace Out!

how would I report someone/a bird store for animal cruelty?

Question by iheart2sing: how would I report someone/a bird store for animal cruelty?
There’s a bird store near my home and I literally cry every time I see it… I’m 18 and am obsessed with animals. I worked at a pet store for two and a half years… Well this store is extremely tiny and hard to navigate… It’s just rows of dirty cages with millions of birds stuffed into them… When I say millions, I mean like 6 Quakers in a foot and a half long cage, two macaws in a cage suited for barely one, hundreds, HUNDREDS of finches in a TINY cage, African grays, chickens, amazons, cockatiels… Like 20 in a cage the size of the one I have for my single cockatiel… I’m telling you, dirty, bad conditions… As the fat owner sits behind the desk all day because he’s too big to get up without having a stroke… All of the birds look sick and this guys been in business too long… Please help me, and the birds!

Strange animal in the pet store?

Question by Daniel: Strange animal in the pet store?
I currently live in the UK, I remember buying a cockateil and a few budgirigars, but I saw a strange looking bird in the store too, it was small, dark brown, long muzzle, no wings could be seen, shaggy mammal-like feathering, pear shaped body and walked pretty slowly in the cage which was around 5 feet wide, do you know what it was? I’m pretty sure it was alive

My pet Cockatiel was attacked by an animal and lost his entire bottom beak. What can I do to help?

Question by ColdPie: My pet Cockatiel was attacked by an animal and lost his entire bottom beak. What can I do to help?
Right now its being hand fed thinned oatmeal with avian nutrients. Will the bottom beak eventually grow back? What other foods can I feed him? Please help because a vet is not an option right now.

What you’re doing is good. Whether or not the beak will grow back depends on how much of it was torn off, but the oatmeal as well as veggies mashed up in a blender are good things that he can eat. But he really needs to see a vet; that’s got to be really painful and could very well get infected and require antibiotics. Why can’t you take him to a vet?

What small animal should i get: rats, or birds….?

ok, well i am 18. i’d really like to get a small pet. i’ve done a lot of research on rats, cockatiels, and lovebirds. they all sound great. i just can’t decide which one i should get. i am leaning towards 2 rats more than anything…but my bedroom really isn’t a rat proof room. plus, i have a cat who is a killer. she kills wild mice all the time. of course if i got rats i’d keep my cat & the rats away from each other, but i don’t know. what should i get, rats, cockatiels, or lovebirds?

thanks :)
