My Cockateil has become territorial, what do I do?

Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A

Renee asked:

When I try to pick him up and he is on top of his cage he will charge at me and bite me. I have had him for over 5 years and he is usually very sweet but if I try to go into his cage to fix or clean something I get attacked. He is perfectly fine away from his cage and he is tame in all other ways. I do not know what to do.

Stop letting him get on top of the cage, at least for now. That priveledge should be given to a bird that knows it’s place. It’s not uncommon, but needs to be put in check before someone gets hurt. Another option is to lower the cage when he is on it so that you do not have to reach up to get him.

okay first off are you letting him alone after he bites you ? if you are then you are letting him know that he can bite and get left alone which is not a good thing . You must teach him that you are boss and he cannot bite you to get his way . start by not letting him get on top of the cage . keep him away from the cage while having him out . I hope I helped and good luck .
