Going to identify my lost cockatiel?
Category: Cockatiel Sounds
I’ve posted a few different questions this past week so I’m sure some of you will be familiar with this. I lost my cocaktiel in mid April and now a woman in Chicago thinks she has him. I will be driving up on Sunday to see if it’s him. The pictures she has sent me look just like him and he has a lot of the same habits my Sammie did.
I guess the question is, how am I going to know for sure??? When I heard him sing over the phone it didn’t sound like him? However, I should mention he was on his own for about 4 – 5 weeks in the wild. She said that he whistles a lot like a meadow lark. When we had him Sammie use to do the Wolf Whistle and Bob White. (she said he did that the first few weeks but she hasn’t heard it in awhile)
Will he remember me?? It’s been 2 months since he’s seen me. Anyone else ever lost a bird and then found him later. Did that bird remember you?? Guess I’m just really worried right now. I need some input.
By the way, he did not have a leg band.
And yes, if it is him I promise I will keep his wings clipped. I have 3 other cockatiels and their wings are clipped now. This was a horrible lesson learned.

If you had close contact with him, he will remember you, and you should have no problem identifying him. Birds have very unique habits. Keep in mind he may have learned some new things since he has been on his own but he will still remember all that you taught him. He should respond to you in a similar manner as he did before. I had to have a family member take care of my birds for about a year. When I picked them up they definately recognized me. They made constant noise for over an hour fighting for my attention.
Birds have good memories. If he was tame and maybe bonded to you, he will most likely remember you. I was away from my bird for two and a half weeks (not as long as yours I know) and the second he saw me he got so excited.
If you have photos of him, print out every one of them and take them with you. Cockatiels may all look the same, but there is always some marking that is slightly unique. The photos can help you compare him as well as prove that he is yours.
He is doing a lot of the same things as your cockatiel so there is a very good chance it is him. When you see him and observe him, in your heart you will probably know.
Good luck! <3
I am so glad you are going to meet this bird. When you enter the room he is in, let him do the recognition – not you. Approach him slowly and see his reaction. Were there some interactive things you did like – gimme a kiss? If he reacts to your physical being, say some of his favorite things.
You will know if it is him and if it is not. Please let us know either way.
Good LUCK!
If it is your sammie you are very lucky, if he was tame you will know if it is him and he will know you.
If it is Sammie, he will remember you.
Remember Dusty’s story? He remembered his mom after 7 months.
Remember Weisenheimer’s story? He knew his mom also after 7 months.
If it is Sammmie he will know you.
