I recently found an adult male cockatiel, he is still agressive how can we tame him?
Question by skooby2: I recently found an adult male cockatiel, he is still agressive how can we tame him?
He was clearly an escaped pet,he is comfortable in his new cage, he eats and drinks and has started whistling occasionally. I would like to pet him and enjoy him more but he bites. Is it to soon after his experience in the wild? I dont know how long he was free but he was exhausted and hungry, clearly freaked out. Any suggestions on taming an adult bird would be appreciated.

Just time and patients. Be around him without trying to touch him to let him get use to you. Then slowly after a week or so begin trying to hand tame him.
I hope took steps to try to find his previous owner before you decided to keep him as a pet. The reason I’m saying this is unfortunately far to many people find lost pet bird and just keep them with out making any effort of find the owner.

Ok sometimes it’s not good To mix other bird breeds with each other. Cause well your other tame bird might become Territorial If it was there first and also it depends if the other cockiteal is a boy or girl, cause they might also mate but I don’t really think it would affect the tameness of the other bird just do the same thing you did to the other as the one you got now. I hope that helped.

Send her to doggy school…OR start getting mean! LoL, hire a doggy trainer or take her to some classes. I only have dogs that are rescued from the street and they can be really mean and old but they can still be trained. Good luck and show them who is boss!!

how do i teach my cockatiel to do tricks with the clicker?
Question by pitbull: how do i teach my cockatiel to do tricks with the clicker?
I’ve been trying target training with my cockatiel and a clicker but it just touches the target stick once and then it doesn’t do it again. It just wants the treat. What is some good advice on teaching my cockatiel tricks.

It’s really pretty much the same process with any animal. If you’re not getting repetitions of the behavior, think about the following, and see if any apply:
- make sure you are giving a treat after every successful touch — even if you forget to click, give a treat.
– maybe the reward you are offering is not high enough value to the bird, or is something you give freely at other times. Reserve something extra-special only for training. If that gets old-hat, switch to something else.
- if it’s a food treat, it may take so long to eat that the bird doesn’t get the point – treats need to be something the animal can gulp right down, and still be hungry and ready for more training
- something about what’s happening around the bird (the social pressure of you staring, expecting something, being in an unusual place, the target stick, the sound of the clicker?) may be off-putting enough that it’s distracting the bird or countering the value of your reward
- you may be holding the treat too close, making it a strong distraction/temptation — try keeping it off of your body, even at arm’s length or held by someone else a few feet away (just make sure the bird can’t get to it!)
– hold the target stick far away from the clicker and the treats, and try moving it around in ways that might intrigue your bird — getting some accidental touches that get clicked and rewarded might get your bird looking away from the treats, and understanding that it’s all about doing something with that stick.
- shape the behavior, if needed — click and treat for any orientation toward the stick at first.
- don’t insist — if the bird isn’t getting it after a few minutes, take the treats and walk away, then try again later. Cockatiels can be food-motivated, sociable and easily bored, so your “you snooze, you lose – I’m leaving” behavior might inspire more interest the next time.

how can i train my cockatiel to go on my finger when it puts its head down for me to pet him?
Question by Andrei: how can i train my cockatiel to go on my finger when it puts its head down for me to pet him?
anyone have any advice?

Answer by mrcrazyswords
I’m confused, do you want him to go on your finger and all he wants to do is get scratches? So you put your finger up and want him to climb on and the bird thinks ‘oh hey a finger, scratch my neck will yah?’
If this is the case the best way to train them to go onto a finger is by putting the finger near their legs, and pushing up into the bid equivalent of their hamstrings. The bird will naturally step up onto your finger. Once you have the technique down use a word like up or hop or something as a command. So you push up on the birds legs and say hop and then give him a treat, repeat this until he realizes that the word hop means you want him to get on you finger.
Eventually if you put your finger down and he leans forward for scratches you can just say the word hop and he should climb up and THEN you can scratch his neck haha.

I don’t know the age, but when they can eat on there own you can teach them to eat out of a spoon and work on eating out of your hand. Take them out and spend time with them. You don’t have to completely take them from there mother. Just spend time with them everyday and they will learn to trust you. I hope this helps.

What Should I Do With This Bird?
Question by Mirth Fortune: What Should I Do With This Bird?
A Week ago My vet was trying to re-home a pigieon (Archangel) and gave him to me. I took him for a week to see how well he tames. He has tamed well and fits in very nicely here, HOWEVER!!!!! Here is where it gets sticky, I have a 7 month cockteil that I got while he was still weaning off. I have school and other life stuff for me to attend to. I don’t feel as if I can/am spending my time equally bettween them and that I am not able(with 2 birds) to give them both the time they dezerve. They are both wonderfull creature and I hate to let one go, but I wanted to know what other thought.
One major problem I have with this is that the vet that I would have to return him to, is NOT an avain vet! He knows close to nothing about him, as how to hold him so he is comfterble with people and what to feed him. When I picked him up they had been feeding him wild turkey feed. He said he had a friend that would take him, but it sounds as if this friend might just have a coup outside. He is pretty socail and I don’t know if he can ajust to being in my room to being outside.
Cons:
I do dearly love him and would love to keep him
The Vet knows close to diddly-squat about birds
Don’t know if he can adjust to being outside in a coup
Pros:
My cockateil with get the attention he needs
The Pigeion will beable to fly more (Possibly)
I really don’t have enough time for them both.
I am probobly going to bring him back, even if I love him, It’s unfair to keep a bird that I don’t have the proper time for. It’s also unfair for my cockateil, he was my first real pet of my own and he love me dearly. I hope someone can tell me what they think. PLEASE HELP

Answer by Cat
I know you said you don’t have time but could you possibly find someone else to take the bird who knows a little bit more than say your vet and who might keep the bird in a similar situation (inside) like you do? Ask friends and other bird lovers that you know if they’d like to take the bird in. This way your cockateil will get more attention, the pigeon will too, and hopefully the pigeon will be taken care of better by the person rather than the vet. Good luck!
