Will my Cockatiel Bird be Okay if Left Alone in the House a Few Days?
Question by Ty: Will my Cockatiel Bird be Okay if Left Alone in the House a Few Days?
We are leaving on family emergency for about a week tops. Our Cockatiel is trained and two years old. Unfortunately he can’t come with us but we bought extra food and water containers so he wont starve and die of thirst. Has anyone done this before?
Please help… What do I need to know?

I have done this before, and my Cockatiel was fine. The only thing he will miss is your attention.

How do I train my cockatiels?
Question by Tico: How do I train my cockatiels?
I have 2 cockatiel and i keep trying to train them but they are still very scared of me Idk what is wrong. Are they not getting trained because they are mates or something? Thanks

Answer by Autumn.
Try training them individuallly. Use lots of treats and don’t give up. Do they know step up? If not, then try teaching them that first, You could also try target training. I’m sure if you just keep trying they’ll come around. Goodluck :]
Oh, how old are they too?

how can i harness train my cockatiel?
Question by malbridgeH: how can i harness train my cockatiel?
i heard that you can take cockatiels outside if you harness train them but how

Answer by Erin Tewes
If you don’t already have a harness, you should get an Aviator from www.theparrotuniversity.com, they ship free worldwide. I got a Feather Tether from the pet shop and it’s fine, but it cost more.
The first part is to introduce it to your bird very, very slowly. If you just whack it on and expect them to get used to it, they will get a phobia of it and will never, ever accept it.
*Start by just holding it in the other hand while you play with your bird, so they can see it. Do this a few times.
*After a few days, have it on the table or wherever you are playing with your bird. Hold a treat near the harness so the bird has to come close to it to get the treat. If the bird is very nervous of the harness, just get the bird to come as close as he’s comfortable and treat him then.
*When the bird is comfortable walking over the harness, get him to touch it with his beak while you hold it and treat him. You can get him to do this by “playing” with it yourself gently in his presence. He will get curious and want to see what it is.
*Then when he is happy to touch the harness for a treat, touch his back with it and treat him immediately after. Touch him with it for longer and longer periods of time, don’t move on to a longer time until he’s fine with the length of time you’re currently touching him.
*Then when he doesn’t mind being touched with it on his back, do the same for his chest, head, and under his wings.
*Then slip it over his head, treat, and take it off immediately. Leave it there for longer and longer periods (up to five seconds, say). You must be holding it, don’t let go and let it slip around cause that may scare the bird and be a negative experience.
*When he doesn’t mind it (he may show that he really wants to do it, cause he knows he’ll get loads of treats!), then you can buckle up the harness (as quickly and gently as possible), treat, and take it off. Do this for longer and longer periods until he’s definitely ok with it.
*Now you can take him outside! Just make sure you have a good grip on the leash at all times, cause he could get a fright at anything, even something you don’t notice, and just take off suddenly.

Can you potty train a Cockatiel??
Question by Allie Mae: Can you potty train a Cockatiel??
Ok, I’ve read tons of answers to different cockatiel questions and whenever one of them says something about letting them be out of their cages for extended periods of time and maybe not even having a cage, it just makes me wonder… does the bird crap all over the house?? or is there a way to teach it where it should do its business??
Ha, this isn’t a completely random question…I’m thinking of getting a cockatiel within the next month or so and am trying to learn from other people’s experiance with this type of bird. I realize they are smart, but I wonder a bit about what the extent of their intelegence is? I would love to trust a bird to be free around the house, but I couldn’t handle finding bird poopie all over the place…

I’m not sure if you can or not, But I know that they make bird diapers. I have never used one on any of my birds, and if you used one on your bird, you would constantly have to be cleaning it. If you are interested in looking into abird diapers then go to the links below:

How do i train my new cockatiel? 10 pts best answer?
Question by Janisse: How do i train my new cockatiel? 10 pts best answer?
My granpa found him in his yard. We searched in the neighbor his original owner but we didn’t find him., so I decided to keep him and give him a home.
So he’s a little afraid of me, when i want to get him out of his cage he flees, when im near him he starts to shake a little, and sometimes he TRIES to bite me but he doesn’t (he never bites me)which mean he’s not that aggressive. He is just VERY shy. I even put him in the floor so he can walk, but he only stays in a corner.
I want him to sing and to let him know that im not going to harm him. Can someone tell me how can i make him more…um…friendly???
his wings are clipped
Best answer:
Answer by curious115
speak to him daily, if it’s safe; leave his door open so he can come and go at his own pace. Consistency is the key to training. Wild birds are trained to eat out of your hand by putting seed or treats on a glove that you have worn, when they are use to eating from the glove, put it on to feed. Time is the best answer, so go slow and give it time.
