A Couple Of Favorite Past Time
What is your favorite past time? Hobby enthusiasts know that spare time is not to be “spent” but savored. If you have a past time you enjoy, you will never look at your spare time in the same way again. If you’re not sure what past time hobby you would enjoy, here are some suggestions.
Many people listen to music as a favorite past time. There is much you can learn about any style of music. You can learn composers, famous melodies, and all about performers past and present. You can develop sophisticated tastes in jazz or classical music or collect a large assortment of CD’s. Music makes a great past time hobby.
A lot of people love animals. Pets of all sorts can become your hobby. Perhaps you enjoy watching birds. If you have trouble finding them in the trees to watch, maybe you’d like to get a pair of canaries, a budgie, or a cockatiel. People who live in the country sometimes become interested in raising ornamental chickens, pigeons, or pheasants. It is very interesting to watch a mother bird take care of a nest of young chicks. Perhaps you can even raise some prize winners!
Dogs make a great hobby, too. Walking and enjoying a pet dog is one thing, but breeding and raising show dogs is something else entirely. Show dogs may require a bit of an investment, but many puppies are free. There is also the aspect of training a dog in obedience. Dogs give a lot of love back to their owners, too, so if you start a past time hobby of caring for a dog, you will never be lonely. However, dogs require quite a bit of work and attention, especially when they are being trained, so keeping dogs is not for everyone.
Bicycles can become your favorite past time. Hobby bicyclists are becoming more and more common to see cycling along lesser traveled highways seeing the countryside up close and personal. Bicycling requires a helmet and suitable clothes as well as a small tool kit for roadside repairs. Or maybe you would enjoy cycling on a smaller scale, simply taking fun rides with your family. The choice is yours.
The world is full of interesting things to learn and do. Don’t merely sit back and watch TV. Get interested in a past time hobby. It’s good for your mind. In fact, it might even keep you from going senile in your old age, if you stay active in a past time hobby. And it’s a good example to our kids and grandkids if we spend our time doing something meaningful.

History
Giraffes in front of Sydney’s skyline.
Rustic Bridge in 2009.
The first public zoo in New South Wales opened in 1884 at Billy Goat Swamp in Moore Park, on a site now occupied by Sydney Boys High School and Sydney Girls High School. Inspired by a 1908 visit to the Hamburg Zoo, the secretary of the zoo, Albert Sherbourne Le Souef, envisioned a new zoo based on the bar-less concept. After realising that the Moore Park site was too small, the NSW Government granted 43 acres (17 ha) of land north of Sydney Harbour. A further 9 acres (3.6 ha) were later granted in 1916.
Taronga is an Aboriginal word meaning beautiful view.
Rustic Bridge
The “Rustic Bridge” was opened in 1915 and was one of Taronga Zoo’s earliest landscape features. It was the main way in which visitors could cross the natural gully that it spans. Early photographs show it as a romantic pathway secluded by plantings. The rustic effect was created by embedding stones in the wall and like the Aquarium, its design was reminiscent of Italian grottoes. A tunnel under the bridge that originally connected the Upper and Lower Aquariums has long been blocked at both ends and is also very popular.
Later additions and changes
A critical review in 1967 led to a new emphasis on scientific conservation, education and preservation. New exhibits were built starting with the Platypus and Nocturnal Houses, waterfowl ponds and walkthrough Rainforest Aviary. A Veterinary Quarantine Centre was built as was an Education Centre (funded by the Department of Education). Previous attractions such as elephant rides, miniature trains, monkey circus and merry-go-round gave way to educational facilities such as Friendship Farm and Seal theatre.
In the mid-1980s, a cable car was installed that allows visitors to view the zoo and Sydney Harbour. It runs from the bottom of the park close to the ferry wharf, and transports passengers to the top end of the zoo.
2000 Masterplan
In 2000, TCSA commenced a 12-year million master plan, the majority of which is being spent at Taronga Zoo. The first major master plan item was the Backyard to Bush precinct. Under the plan, the Zoo received five Asian elephants from the Thailand Zoological Park Organisation for breeding purposes, education, long-term research and involvement of conservation programs. The plan has met opposition from environmental activists in Thailand, who blockaded the trucks hauling the elephants to Bangkok International Airport for their flight on June 5, 2006. The elephants along with other Asian rain forest specimens are housed in the “Wild Asia” precinct which opened in 2006 and aims to immerse visitors in an Asian rain forest environment.
A marine section, Great Southern Oceans, opened in April 2008.
Zoo Friends
Zoo Friends offers support in form of volunteers and fund raising for both Taronga and Western Plains Zoo. Members are offered behind-the-scenes experiences at the Zoo and unlimited Zoo entry. Members are also eligible to volunteer to help at the Zoo.
Notable Events
Platypus Birth
In February, 2003 it became the second zoo in Australia to breed the platypus.
Elephant Birth
Luk Chai at five months old.
At 3.04am on July 4th 2009 Thong Dee, an Asian Elephant gave birth to a male calf named Luk Chai. It is the first calf ever born in Australia. Thong Dee is one of the 8 Elephants imported into Australia to participate in the Australasian Conservation Breeding Program. Taronga is expecting a further two calves to be born in the next two years. The baby elephant is a major tourist attraction, with thousands of visitors attending the zoo just to see him.

Parrots For Sale
Freddy (canary) gets a free ride on Cedric’s (cockatiel) back in the bath. They are both female (i know, it’s strange they have male names, but when we bought them we thought they were males & kept there names as it is) I apologize for the poor video quality in some areas, as this video was recorded on a Sharp GX-30 phone and not on a digital camera. And yes the canary is REAL, just because it doesn’t do a lot in the video, doesn’t mean it’s fake or a toy. I’d imagine it would be very hard to find a toy canary that looks like my canary… Take a look at my other bird videos and decide for yourself if you think my canary is real or not before you leave a comment!

Parrots For Sale
It is clear some people want to have parrot as pet. If you are that person, you may be anxious about getting the finest one for your personal satisfaction, care and business. Parrots are for sale all around, and selling such pet is 100% different from selling home commodities. It will need time and dedication.
This will be a guide if you want know what species you would prefer. Here are the descriptions of selected parrots perfect for sale:
1. LOVEBIRDS – very adorable little small breed from Africa, lovebirds can be tamed like common parrots except for the aggressiveness towards opposite sex, the male rubs the perch as a distinct sexual behavior, which is quite disturbing to some owners. They have to be housed in different cages. Generally, lovebirds are excellent in parenting their siblings and very good in breeding.
2. AFRICAN GREYS – More than vanity, this parrot specie is the best sound imitator from among the species. It doesn’t mean this parrot has to be on high sale just because of the talking qualities. Owners getting disappointed with non-talking African Grey specie often tends to neglect their pets afterwards.
3. COCKATIELS – Lovely because of the distinct pointed crown, this specie can learn tricks easily, very affectionate, and can live to a life span of 15 to 20 years given the proper care. The coating on its feather can cause allergies. Cockatiels have this distinct behavior when left in dark, which can cause self-injury.
4. SENEGAL PARROTS – Medium-sized specie good for apartments because of its more quiet behavior. Much adept in imitating sounds of surroundings than distinct speech of people. It is not recommended for outdoor and spacious free walks as it can fly farther and get lost.
5. PARROTLETS – Comes in tiny sizes, this specie have no problem with dark places, considered brave. The voice is quite small, best if you only tolerate chirping when bred in a small flat or room. Prone to accidents, they must be looked after all the time when out of the cage.
6. CANARIES – Specifically attributed to Canary Island, after Romans named it. Canaries have three types. Song Canaries are known for the distinctive voice and singing. Color Canaries have attractive and bright colors, making the collecting of several varieties popular to breeders. Canaries are territorial and not so sociable. From among the parrots, this specie has the sweetest voice.
The sale of parrots worldwide happens silently. It comes with interest and passion, but believe it or not, thinking about the small world you can give to these lovely birds is a journey. Living with parrots is worth a quality life.

Familiarizing Yourself With Different Parrot Species
Fascinated to the world of the fast-talking, fun-loving parrots? Are you contemplating on the idea of getting one as your pet bird? If you have plans of purchasing one in the future, then you must familiarize yourself with the different parrot species existing in the pet trades and pet stores today.
As defined, parrots are a very popular group of birds for possessing high intelligence depending on the degree of its socialization and training. Famous for its ability to imitate human speech and various sounds, these tropical colorful birds are mainly found in Australia and South America.
Having a variety of species, parrots differ in size and color. Some parrots are bigger and grander while others are smaller and typical. When it comes to colors, green is considered the most common shade of parrots and are usually wonderful pets for their amazing talking abilities. Several types of parrots are multi-colored-with a distinctive combination of bright blue, yellow, green, and white mixtures.
These birds are also characterized by having powerful hooked bills and feet meant for tree climbing. Mainly vegetarian, other basic foods of almost all types of parrots are includes fruits, chicken or meat and a lot of seeds. Although they belong to only one family of birds, parrot species have distinctive personalities and nature. Some of them are naturally friendly while some are moody and destructive because they pluck their feathers if they are bored or unhappy.
Parrot species include Macaws, Conures, Amazons, African Gray Parrots, Cockatiels, Cockatoos, Budgerigars, and Eclectus. Macaws are one of the most coveted birds in aviculture because of their comical and affectionate nature. Conures, on the other hand, are small cousins of the Macaw that has 2 sub-specie: Aratinga and the Pyrrhura.
While Conures are known for its variety of color and gentle personality, Amazons are famous for their superb talking ability. Considered as the most popular large parrots in aviculture that exhibits distinct personalities, amazons are often considered as delightful pets for imitating sounds well.
African Grey Parrots is probably the most intelligent parrot there is. Despite their intelligence, greys can be hard to handle because they are generally quiet, resulting to stress attacks and reactions.
Cockatoos are considered among the favorites because they are beautiful, smart, playful, cuddly, and good talkers. Although they are generally tame, cockatoos can be hard to handle because they thrive in too much attention.
Cockatiels are most common pet birds because they are easy to breed and are relatively inexpensive pets; Budgerigars or “parakeets” that are usually afraid of humans if not trained properly; and the Eclectus that are “sexually dimorphic” or the male and females look markedly different.

Cockatiels and Budgerigars – Is This the Right Bird For You?
As the smallest member of the cockatoo family, cockatiel birds are some of the most popular pet birds in the world. However, they can bite and be temperamental depending on their surroundings and how you handle them. This means that if you have grabby children that like to pull tails or squeeze birds, the cockatiel may not be the best choice for a pet.
On the other hand, cockatiel birds don’t require as much attention as larger members of the cockatoo family, thus they would be a good pet if you work long hours and are away from the home for a majority of the day. However, this should not be a cue for you to neglect your bird. Cockatiels are still very sociable birds and will need that degree of interaction and companionship to not become bored and depressed. A sad cockatiel is an unhealthy cockatiel because they tend to stop eating and drinking and plucking away at their feathers – none of which are beneficial behaviors.
The budgerigar (budgie) is a small native Australian bird that is often referred to in other countries as a parakeet. However, they make up for their diminutive size through their intelligence. You can very quickly tame a new pet budgie bird, especially if you hand feed them from the day that they are brought into your house.
Both the males and females of the species can talk; but, in general, your better bet is to buy a male budgie bird if you want to increase the chances of getting one that does. It is difficult to tell the two sexes apart when budgerigars are young but as they grow older the color of the area surrounding its nostrils on its beak will change color – blue in males, brown in females. However, there is a chance that this method of sexing your budgie is not reliable because of the different color variations exhibited by different budgies.
It is always fun to know have parrots as pets. Parrot Training – Tips on Training a Crazy Out of Control Bird
Bird Training Help
Parrot Training is the first thing you need to do if you have a bird who seems out of control.Everybody loves a pretty parrot but if you’re bird is not properly trained it can easily become a nightmare for you and the whole family.
That’s why you must train your parrot. Let’s talk about your bird and why he’s crazy, or why you think he may be. Lets also examine what birds think about and what to do if you have a fearful bird.
My Parrot and me
Parrot training is simply the process of getting to know your bird and developing a relationship whereby your bird knows who’s the boss. Maintaining dominance over your bird is very important if you want to gain the trust and love you want from him.
All animals will take the dominant position if you let them so you can’t yield to your bird. You are the “head” flock member so you have to act like it. If you back down to a bird that lunges at you then you are yielding ground.
And, your training him TO lunge at you. Youre backing off and hes getting the response from you that he wants. All this does is re-enforce a negative behavior. Don’t do it pal.
When to Parrot Train
If at all possible, train your bird when he is a baby, don’t wait. This will make it easy to have a well rounded pet who doesn’t scream, bite and isn’t afraid of you or other people. Everybody loves a well behaved bird and by training him you will be able to enjoy him more and he will love you for it. Young birds are easier to train but you really can train a bird of any age as long as you have the fortitude.
Although young birds are easier to train you have to watch out and not allow them to develop a biting mentality. As young birds are weaned and discover the power of their beaks they will start nipping and biting down. Don’t allow it to become habit forming and don’t encourage this type of biting.
Parrot Psychology
Understanding how your bird thinks will help you in understanding why they do what they do. For instance, the reason parrots tend to get very loud at times is because it’s simply their method of talking to us.
Birds will also make a lot of noise if there basic needs are not met, this means water, food and of course a nice big cage. To help the process of training you need to make sure these essentials are in place, and that your bird is happy. Your bird will scream, shout and act up if he’s hungry, thirsty or afraid.
Parrot Training Procedure
All training is done through some form of repetition. This is the best way to get started. Before you get into advanced training you must have a bird that is not afraid of you. So spend time with him, sit by his cage and talk to him. You want a relaxed bird who’s not afraid or easily spooked.
If your bird is afraid of you then you have some work to do. First, approach him slowly and calmly. If he starts to show he’s afraid you need to stop. Simply stand still and don’t move, then back off. It’s important to let animals know their not going to be hurt. Believe it or not, this is training and it’s the first step. Repeat this first step over and over again and you will make progress.
In time you will get closer and eventually open up the cage. After that you will be ready for the next steip; the up and down command. Later you will move into more advanced training. Just take things slow. You have to start somewhere so the sooner you start the sooner your bird will take to you.
Train Your Bird Now
It’s not the end of the world if you think you have a bird that’s crazy. You can train any parrot or any bird, you just have to have a little patience. Just remember that birds are naturally loud because thats how they relate to each other.
But any bird who is scared will attempt to lunge and bite. Remembers why we parrot train, we do it to take control and stay dominant. It’s the only way to control bad bird behavior.
Training your bird allows you to acheive.
Trust
Dominance
Obedience
Affection
Parrots think like birds, that’s because they are birds, so it’s important that you realize this and work to gain the dominant position in the relationship. You have to gain your parrots trust first before you get his affection.
Train your Parrots guys. The whoe purpose of owning these beautiful birds, or any pet for that matter, is so that we can enjoy them right. Get help with all your birds and a free video by visiting http://ParrotBirdTraining.com
Bird Species Options For Your Family Pet
Having a pet bird is gratifying. Pet birds are also a little demanding should you be familiar with a “normal” pet, such as the house cat. As a result, should you be in the market to become a bird owner you will need to select a species that matches your way of life. You must be ready to commit to the responsibilities, allotment of time and resources that will ensure your bird stays healthy, happy and provides you the entertainment and delight you were searching for when you decided to be a bird owner.
The following species of birds are familiar options as pets. Some common traits, life span, and more are supplied for you to be able to select the correct bird for your situation.
1. Canaries and finches. They are small birds that require less room and therefore small to medium bird cages. They are normally about 5 inches in height or even smaller. They are regularly knows as waxbills or softbills and flourish in small flocks. This is important because you probably don’t want to purchase just one. Three or more can make for much happier birds as they enjoy company and congregation. The canary and finch also require much less attention than bigger birds require. This makes them a perfect compliment for the family or individual who does not have large amounts of time to spend socializing and engaging in birds activities. If handled and cared for properly, these birds can live as much as 10 years.
2. Parakeets. The parakeet is perfect for the family with kids. The most common type is the Budgerigar or Bungee. A parakeet is a superb “first time” pet for kids. They are available in various colors, are petite, and are very intelligent for a smaller bird species. The parakeet has the ability for a limited vocabulary and can whistle and sing. They require a bit more consideration than the canary and finch but are not excessively demanding of your time. A healthy and happy parakeet can live up to 14 years.
3. Cockatiels. Cockatiels are extremely popular due to there medium size and friendly disposition. They originated in Australia and are recognized for their singing and whistling skills. They can speak but often choose to whistle. They are excellent mimickers of noise. They can easily emulate the noises of barking dogs and the telephone ringing. Cockatiels are available in many color combos and can live up to 20 years in a healthy environment.
4. Lovebirds. Lovebirds are among the tiniest species of parrot, usually reaching lengths of about 6 inches. They are smart and generally have excellent personalities. They make great pets and are ideal for those who live in apartments and condos since they are usually quieter than other parrot species. They are not time demanding but you will want to spend time with them on account of their enjoyable personalities. Lovebirds are colorful, beautiful birds and, with proper care, can attain and exceed a life expectancy of 20 years.
5. African Greys. If you are not ready to live with a bird for potentially the remainder of your life, you should not have an African Grey. They can survive as long as 70 years and they are ideal if you are looking to buy a companion for life. They’re generally regarded as the most intelligent species of parrot. They can be taught a vocabulary of nearly 2,000 words if trained correctly. They are very smart and also demanding. They do get bored and lonely. Be ready to spend time with them, engage with them and participate in stimulating activities. They are very affectionate and your efforts will be rewarded with all of the attention you will receive.
If you’re looking to purchase a pet bird for you or your family, these shown are some excellent options. Always ask questions to the sales person or breeder before purchasing regarding how to specifically care for your pet. As much as you will benefit from their presence, you need to be able to provide them the time and quality interaction they require from you.

Second, space is a very important issue. If you have limited space for an adequate size cage for your bird do not choose a large bird such as a parrot. You may want to choose a canary, finch or parakeet. You want to make sure there is enough room in the cage for your bird to get exercise.
Third, if you have chosen a bird that requires attention affection you and your family better be around for them. Some birds such as Cockatiels require human companionship. Some birds are happy to sit on their human owners shoulder all day. If you have chosen a breed that requires human attention, make sure you and your family will be there for the bird.
Fourth, most birds love to be taken out of their cage and handled by their owner. You must learn how to properly handle your bird and make sure you are not hurting the bird. Handling your bird will make for a much closer relationship with your bird.
Fifth, learn what is the proper diet for your bird. The diet of birds vary greatly by breed. You also want to learn what could be hazardous for your bird, such as house plants. With good nutrition your bird can live a long and healthy life.
