Pet Bird Clicker Training 101

Clicker training is a good way to teach your bird tricks and teach them to come to where you want them. You’ll need a chopstick or small stick, a clicker (from a petstore), and a treat like millet. Hold the chopstick in front of your bird. He will get curious and touch it with his beak. Click the clicker and give him a treat, and soon he will learn to touch the end of the stick wherever you place it.

Clicker training #4 – Fly to me

Pumpkin fly’s to me i only tried this once b4 i recorded it (9 month old cockatiel) I have him for 89 days it’s been 16 days since he 1st sat on my hand TIPS: To do this you need once again a clicker and some treat STEP 1 Get your bird to trust you and stand on your hand *you can see that in my video: (Clicker training #2 – trust exercise) STEP 2 Get him to sit on your hand and stay there *you can see that in my video: (Clicker training #3 – sitting on my hand) SETP 3 Finally when the bird is comfortable make him takes small steps from the cage to your hand/ fingers, then make him jump to you, and finally fly Keep going back gradually, so it won’t be a huge distance for the bird and it won’t be intimidating or discouraging

Training Tori my white faced cockatiel

You can see his missing wing tips. This even after one year. At least all of Toris secondary feathers have come in. It’s just the last 4 or 5 primaries that are having trubble. The vet seid that his feather follicles are damaged. Toris only hope is taking an oral medication called “Rimadyl”. There is a risk of gastrointestinal problems, so Tori has to be monitored very closely. I’ve read a scary story about a bird given an over dose by injection. The vet has me giving him ” 0.2 ml” every other day. One of the benefits of “Rimadyl” is it increases blood flow to the wings. I trust my Vet, because she only works with birds, and has an excellent track record.

Cute cockatiels and their egg

Too cute not to share. Because of training my cockatiels are still quite interactive, even when they have an egg. The egg is broken (no babies please!) but I do let them hang onto it to prevent chronic egg laying and as you can see there is a certain enrichment value for them. The male probably isn’t destined for parenthood anyway. He gets a tad rough with it a few times. You can also hear my amazon parrot singing in the background. Enjoy! Barbara Heidenreich www.
