Night Fright question/experiences?

Question by T:): Night Fright question/experiences?
Just wanting some experiences or feedback as I am unsure if night fright is the answer.

I cam home later than usual. The birds were already asleep. The dog barked at me as i entered the house. Turned the lights on ASAP and pottered around for 5 mins or so.
I then realised that my Sun Conure had passed away. from his position it appears like he had literally keeled over a died :~( . He was not on the bottom of his cage as you would expect a sick bird to be. It would not have happened long after my arrival home as he was still warm according to my partner.
He was a young bird, about a yr and a half and apparently fine 4 hours previous, being his normal self.
Sorry if i am a little vague at the moment as I am upset to loose one of my feathered friends.
Has anyone had any other experiences with birds and night fright? Can night fright cause heart attack in birds? I know Cockatiels are commonly affected, and he is next to three.
Imagine a bird on their perch, flapping their wings. Take a picture, turn it upside down…. What illness could cause that?

Best answer:

Answer by Birdman
I’m sorry for your loss.
Conures aren’t really known for having night frights.
Birds tend to not show any signs of illness when they get sick, so he probably had been sick for a while without you knowing it.

birds dying? Same time?

Question by Jullie: birds dying? Same time?
Hi,
i have had two cockatiels and they both died in a matter of 2 weeks from coming to my home. We bought them from a bird store and the first one died so we went back to the store and they gave us another and it died in two weeks. And some people say is your house dirty? I dont want to sound braggy but we are quite wealthy and live in a nice clean big house. So its not that. I dont know what it is and i am scared to get another bird. What could it be?
Now the store did close down 2 months later maybe a bird flu went around? and the weird thing is is my mom got up at 6:00 and the bird was fine and showed NO symptoms f being sick and an hour later when she went to wake me the bird was dead. It was so weird and the birds would have their heads tucked under their wings. I dont know. PLZ help
Ya I returned the cage ( after i scrubbed it with bleach)
and i am hesitent to get another bird
Yes we do i should check that.
No i wasnt trying to brag about being “wealthy” i just get so many answers saying “well if u live in a messy house u probably killed them iwith some mold or something” i am just tired of those answers so i was making it clear.

yes we do use that.
No one smokes in our house tho only my bro does and hes moving out when he graduates high school when school ends. But he NEVER smokes inside always outside. he knows he would never do that even he thinks its gross
**WOW***
wow okay thank you,
i learned lot of things i did lots of research and took really good care of my birds (i am kind of perfectionest and like things to be clean but i am not crazy)
so i cleaned their dishes and cash every day between my family the birds were almost always out. so thank you very much
i didnt know air fresheners and such hurt birds i knew non stick cook ware did tho
thank you very much
also i know ALL about puppy mills i didnt know they did it with other animals too until i saw this thing on MSN with a video of petsmart animals and there was this one guy neuturing a rabbit with our gloves, he used clorax wipes to disinfect ANd the poor rabbit wasnt funny put to sleep so it could still feel pain
AWFUL do ppl think animals cant feel pain or something?
I DID DO RESEARCH!!!!
I AM FULLY
aware that teflon is poisinous to birds

Answer by cdsgeo2
Petsmart was closed down because the birds were all sick from the breeder they bought from.
If this is where you bought them ask for your money back and tell why.

Birds can die fast, they don’t show the signs of sickness like dogs and cats do.

I am so sorry you had to go through this.
Scrub down the cage with hot water and bleach, then rinse and rinse really well and dry and air well before ever putting another bird in this same cage.

These babies were sick when you bought them.

My Sun Conure is Oddly quiet and extremely “needy”.?

Question by Batman Superman: My Sun Conure is Oddly quiet and extremely “needy”.?
So about 4 months ago I bought a Sun Conure at my local pet shop. The lady at the pet shop warned me about how “loud” they can get. I own other parrots and I know they can be loud and infact, no matter how loud they get, I really don’t mind. The problem is that she is alot quieter than my cockatiels. I’m wondering if the petshop trained the bird to be so quiet or if she could be sick or have voice problems. I have heard her scream and squawk occassionally. Another problem. I pretty much let her roam the house as she wishes but she only wishes to be on someone’s shoulder. Doesn’t matter who really, she seems to like everyone at my house. (thought she has her favorites) The problem comes when someone visits, she will fly at them and perch on their shoulders, she won’t stay on where I want her to stay and people have to constantly be running/ducking and weaving to avoid her. I don’t want to trim her wings. I am wondering if there’s a way to train her to stay and be more independent.
One more question. I have tried potty training her. Normally when I wake up she comes out of her sleeping pouch fly’s at me and I put her on the ground and say “poop” and she does. The training went wrong somewhere because she only poops on the ground in the morning the rest of the day she will fly to me and poop on me. (not cool) I don’t like doing laundry everyday. Any suggestions?

Question by ~PUNJABI PRINCESS~: what bird should i get? parakeet? lovebird?
Hi.

I just came back from riverside and when i came home my parakeet died. yes there was someone watching him. I have 3 birds now and just that one died. All my other birds were fine. I know why he died he was sick so please don’t say i’m a bad owner. I’m getting a new bird tomarrow and i can’t decide which i should get. Parakeet or lovebird? i have never owned a lovebird so do you guys know stuff about them? How big do they grow? Are they noisy? Do they get along with parakeets and cockatiels? I’m really sad that my budgie nazo died. I have never had a pet that died before so i have never been through this before so some stories would be nice like what happened when your bird died and what made you feel better. Thanks.
i would love to get a princess parrot! i cant afford a giant cage! but ill see. i cant really seem to pick best answer! and when my parakeet died my cockatiel was makeing noises. and my parakeet was lifeless on the bottom of the cage and one eye was closed and the other was open. the eye that was open was grey instead of black. what does that mean? did he die in his sleep?

Best answer:

Answer by bkarfloop
you should see a bird breeder and talk to them about this. its up to you though. go to see which bird you fall in love with the most at the breeder’s. parakeets can talk , but lovebirds can’t , and they usually run for the same price at a breeders.

how can i take my parakeet oversea with me?

Question by yeah: how can i take my parakeet oversea with me?
i plan on traveling to europe, and i’ll stay there for 2 weeks maybe longer, now i have 7 pets, 4 parakeets, 2 cockatiels and a guinea pig.
the reason why i wanna take one parakeet with me is cause he is sick, he had a seizure april 29 last year, and he still depends on me for water…
other birds are all ok, and ill have my friends come in and change the water and feed them.
is there any way i can take m yparakeet with me, i dont want to leave him to anybody, do i need to quarantee him,
what are the ways to take a parakeet to europe, would the fact that he is sick ruin his chance of traveling on board??
help me guys. i need your advice.
do i need to take him to the vet frst and how much extra would my ticket cost for the parakeet. he would be on the plane with me in the little carry on.
i just dont trust anybody takin care of him while im gone, there is a special way he drinks water, and i dont think anybody would have patence to do what im doing every day for the last year.. might even cancel the trip if i dont find anybody to take care of him,,,it is really stupid that pet birds cant travel regardless if they sick or not, if dogs can travel for 200$ why cant the birds too.
and yeah my parakeets disease id not transmisable.

Best answer:

Answer by deedeexl3
im pretty sure you r required to take him to the vet first. and in the back of planes they have a room for animals and i think they put them in cages and keep them there. the room isnt in best condition i kno that. but if u are flying on a good plane, the parakeet will b fine im sure. but to b on the safe side i would take him to the vet first and have some kind of note from the veternarian saying u have brought him to the vet. and the fact that he is sick is okay as long as his sickness is not spreadable to other passangers

Question by *Ruffian*: my cockatiels nose looks…?
looks like it is plugged hee can breath but i am worried is he sick?
thanks guys i gave him a little bath and my mom manged to take out the little crust from his nose he is doing better.

Best answer:

Answer by mockingbird
if there is anythign coming out of the nose the bird is sick and needs to go to the vet NOW.

if nothing is coming out, you’re worrying over nothing. give your bird a bath, such as by spraying him with water, and he will sneeze and have a clean nose again.

My bird died today :( what will happen to my others?

Question by jjaystar: My bird died today :( what will happen to my others?
Today, my masked lovebird died. She was having trouble breathing for a while, but we thought she might have swallowed millet or something and would cough it up. The day before she died, she was barely breathing… She lived in a cage with another budgie, and played with two others we kept in a separate cage. She was also out a few times with our other two cockatiels. None of them have showed any signs of sickness in all the time our lovebird was sick. We buried her as soon as we found out she died. Are there any ideas as to how my bird died? What should i do for the bird that shared the cage with her? Will my other birds get sick?
She was given to us by a family member about 4 years ago, but we don’t know her actual age.

How Can I Educate People About Proper Bird Keeping?

Question by chocoboryo: How Can I Educate People About Proper Bird Keeping?
SHORT VERSION
Serious question. In short, what things can I do to make people aware of the correct way to care for pet birds? A way to reach them and really make them consider, without criticising them or extreme activism (people aren’t going to listen if you make them feel angry or stupid). Thanks, long version of this question is below, you don’t have to read.

LONG VERSION
Most people I see who own birds (mostly cockatiels and budgies) keep them alone in a too-small cage, feed them nothing but seed, no proper toys, and never let them out. In my opinion, this is cruelty.

I have a growing website about birdkeeping but the people who really need to know usually don’t bother looking up things like that on the net.

I work at a pet shop so that is a good start and a great opportunity to start telling people what birds really need to keep them happy.

But it doesn’t reach everyone and some who are served by co-workers buy birds and are terribly misinformed (one customer laughed at the idea of ever taking his two new cockatiels out of the teeny cage he bought (they couldn’t even open their wings!) – the co-worker didn’t really explain it properly and even reccomended the cage to him).

It makes me sick to the stomach thinking about what some of those animals are going through right now. I would like to know other ways to inform and convince people.

Serious answers only, this is important to me. Thanks! :) Also tips for educating customers who aren’t as open to listening at the pet shop would be nice too.
Unfortunately I’m the equivalent to a cat lady. I babble nonsense and throw birds at people.

Cockatiels Feathers???

Question by Ryan: Cockatiels Feathers???
Is my bird sick if about three feathers on the top of her head are not feathery and are just the middle part? Is she molting? There is usually at least one that looks like this but there are three now it seems.

Best answer:

Answer by Prairie Fire
Do the feathers appear to have a waxy coating on them? If so, they are new feathers and need to have the coating rubbed off so they look feathery and fluff out. Rub her head if she allows it, or just wait and she will eventually rub the coating off herself.

ahh! Finch plague! Help me!?

Question by Elena R: ahh! Finch plague! Help me!?
My male society finch just died. RIP Cupid :(
His mate is looking sick too.
So I put her upstairs with my Zebra finches who are just recovering from sickness and are in a room that I’ve heated to 90 degrees.
They all got a draft because my dad is an idiot and left the window open while I was at school and it’s very windy out.
I feel like I have to seperate them completely. They’re all in one cage right now.
BUT I can’t think of a way to seperate all my birds.
I have 5 cages.
Two cockatiels are in my largest cage.
One Lovebird that I cannot put in the same cage as anything else is in my med/small cage.
my two Budgies are in my tall cage ( I don’t know if I should put them with the cockatiels?)
I have an empty tall cage
and I have all three finches in my smaller cage.
I need to seperate them!
Please help me come up with a way to seperate them and not have any fighting between my other birds
PS My lovebird is the only bird not showing signs of illness at this time. The cockatiels and budgies are not looking extremely ill, but they are showing symptoms.

You need all the bird, sick or not, in fish tanks. You put a tea towel on the bottom and a doily or net taped over the top. Food and water containers in one corner(Double sided tape under to stop tipping, the birds will climb on them) and but all of them along the edge of an electric blanket put on a warm temp (Depends on where you live) and have half the tank on and half off. Leave them there till the droppings are firm and regular and they’re eating as normal, and even the leave them like that for 24hours after they’re better. Whilst the birds are in the hospital clean the cages and toys and scrub down the perches. You don’t want to clean with anything you can’t lick like bleach. I used dish washing liquid and then rinse off under boiling water and dry with paper towel. When you clean the perches (If you use branches just get new ones) take off the plastic end (If they have them) and scrub them down and then rinse and leave in the oven on the lowest temp for 1hr. Re-make the cages up and put them out in the sun to kill any bacteria that thrives on darkness (Many do). Once a bird becomes healthy take them out of that room and away from the sick birds. You can put them back in their cages but not outside if that’s where they were. Once everyone’s better life can carry on. Literally the other day I had to do the same thing with my two budgies and they were NOT pleased. They spent a couple of day’s on the floor in front of the heater confined to fish tanks. They’re better now and sleeping in their cage (It’s 7am, I uncover at 8am) they had diarrhoea and were lethargic but they’ve pepped up and are better. Good luck and don’t give them any treats, stick to seed and or pellets and water (bottled if you can afford it)
