Urgent,What if a teeny tiny smidge of fat free milk gets accidentally mixed in with a Baby Cockatiels formula?
Question by Debbie: Urgent,What if a teeny tiny smidge of fat free milk gets accidentally mixed in with a Baby Cockatiels formula?
4 days old babies, only maybe half a dropper full of combo water/fat free skim milk&the formula powder, yes, I know that baby Tiels are not supposed to get the fat free skim milk, that’s why I’m asking this question, what happened was I had premixed some formula mixture that I was feeding the babies and I sent a friend in the kitchen to get a smidge of some water just to re-loosen up the thickening formula in the little container that I use to suck it out of with the dropper, anyways, I told the friend to use the green pitcher but to just add a smidge to loosen it up, well there was a green pitcher of fat free skim milk in the frig next to a tiel green pitcher of the boiled water, so I take blame in that as I guess I should have remembered that my fat free milk was in there as well, Thank God it was Fat Free, I’m hoping this is a positive thing, assuming it’s the enzymes in the fattier milk that would be the hazardousest part of the milk, please say that’s a fact, can anyone relieve our minds so that we KNOW for sure that this smidge mixed in with already prepared with boiled water formula will be not hazardous to the babies, we’re worried sick, Mom&Dad had abandoned the babies, so I took on the hand rearing of them, having done it with their first brood, except started it when they were much older at 5 weeks old, so I took on taking over where Mom&Dad really never took off to start with, I can’t believe they did that, they were such doting parents on their other 2 broods, but anyways as I ususally do, I get off track of the original subject, just wanted to have the whole story out there, please someone help relieve our minds and say we have nothing to worry about, which I feel will be the case being as it was such a tiny amount, yes I know so are the babies, that’s why I’m checking and hoping with someone out there who might know, please urgently need someone to answer and Thanks Soooo Much in Advance!

you didn’t say if you already fed it to them or not…. if not, don’t do it… if you already did… there’s not much you can do about it now… I don’t really think fat free milk would hurt them… but then again I never fed my chicks milk… if you did feed it to them how long ago did you feed them?

My cockatiels have mated, now what?
Question by Elena R: My cockatiels have mated, now what?
I saw them mate about 4 times this week.
Neither of them have taken an interest to the nest box I have set up for them.
Should I be worried?
I feed them well, they always have seed. And I feed them corn, broccoli, and some type of fruit depending on what I have in the morning in moderation; I’ve never fed them so much fruit/veggies that it got them sick. They usually don’t like to eat it any other time, however I will offer it occasionally in the afternoon around 3pm.
I’m worried that they’re just going to lay there eggs on the floor or in their hideaway hut thingy.
What should I do?

Can Cockatiels be kept outside in a cage?
Question by Tiffany O: Can Cockatiels be kept outside in a cage?
I have had one tiel for 3 years and we got a friend for it about a year ago. About 5 months after getting the new tiel I got sick with a cold but it never seemed to go away. I always have a stuffy nose. I went to the doctor a few months ago and she ran many various tests but nothing came back as the cause of the stuffing nose but that it is inflamed. I have also been on allergy medicine for over two years. I finally put two and two together thinking that my nose can’t handle having two birds. I was fine with one but started having problems when we added the second. I would like to see if this really is the problem and take the birds out of the house for a week or so to see if my problem clears up. We have a covered porch and they have a large cage that they are in. Is it OK to keep them outside all the time? How cold is too cold for them? We keep the house around 74 degrees. I have a lot invested in them and I enjoy their company, and would like to keep them. Thanks!

You could keep them outside, I would think, anytime above 40 degrees, as long as they have a nest box with bedding to get into at night. We have a cockatiel now that was found outside in 30 degree weather with snow on the ground!! If you are just wanting to see if you get better, keeping them outside all summer shouldn’t be a problem at all.

Why has my cockatiels pooped changed?
Question by SnowFaery: Why has my cockatiels pooped changed?
He is 12 years old and always lived with me. About 3 to 4 months ago I noticed his poop changed. It became kind of gritty and dryish and smells horrible (really horrible!). Now about a month ago he became sick. Basically he quit eating and lost a bunch of weight. We never acted sick, he just would not eat his seeds. He did continue to eat some table food. I had to tube feed him baby food for about a week and then he started chowing down on his seeds again. His poop was then totally normal. Now it is getting yucky again (he is still eating and seems fine otherwise). When he was not eating and in to the vet they could not find anything wrong with him. He had blood tests, x-rays and the whole works. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this. I am desperate. He has always went to the same vet and they seem very capable but I feel that my bird needs to be fixed before it is too late.

It could be a fluxation of his intestinal bacteria causing him some issue. I would suggest collecting some of it and having it sent out for parasite and bacterial analysis.

How can I reconcile my pain and guilt over the death of a pet bird that I had cared for & become attached to?
Question by bevmaccat: How can I reconcile my pain and guilt over the death of a pet bird that I had cared for & become attached to?
I was helping a close neighbor feed her 2 cockatiels for 6weeks. The neighbor, not out of town but had just left to be with her boyfriend 5 blocks away. It was becoming clear that I was the only person interested in her birds. I related that I was getting tired of the obligation and was repeatedly told that she would take over. Not sure, I went in many times and found their food and water was nearly empty. I could not let them suffer and fed them for all these weeks. I really felt sorry for them, and I kept going in often.Tuesday I noticed the male who was a free bird, was not in his cage at his normal time, but was sitting by the heater… and he was quiet.
Wed, certain he was ill & called the neighbor, early in the day. She wasn’t alarmed, but came home at 9:30 pm, &agreed he was very sick. She took him to emergency, he died in the night. I have been devasted, and can’t get the memory of him coming to me, to hold comfort & sooth him. It was too little too late. Poor little guy….

I lost my pet canary suddenly. I cared for him and loved very much. I still don’t know why he died. He was fine and singing before I went to take a shower and when I got out, he was dead. I was devastated and was hurt. I guess the only thing you can do is remember the bird in good ways and time will heal your pain. I am not sure how fast you will forget but it has been 47 days since my canary died and I still miss him but not as much as I did when he first died. It is always sad to loose a beautiful soul, especially when you know that you did your best and there was nothing you could have done to prevent that incident. I am very sorry and good luck.

Abandoned pet reptiles, amphibians, exotic’s, and small mammal rescue/shelter in Las Vegas?
Question by SnowCone: Abandoned pet reptiles, amphibians, exotic’s, and small mammal rescue/shelter in Las Vegas?
I am very interested in taking care of abandoned pets. I’ve been trying to search this on my own, but I don’t know what to search…
I have kept a number of small reptiles and mammals and try to learn about a different animal in the pet trade every week or so -I know about small mammals like chinchillas, hamsters and ferrets, a lot about cockatiels and a little about other bird species. Then there’s numerous species of land and water turtle, hermit crabs, small snakes, a few lizards that I know a lot about. I even know a few things about fennec foxs, mud skippers, and sugar gliders, -the list goes on.
I can’t find any volunteer work in my area that works along side my interest in certain species. I’m not looking for pay, I’m looking for something that would involve managing the right conditions for abandoned animals, even if that means just scrubbing down their cages and refilling food dishes.
My zip code is 89117, anywhere within a 20~30 minute drive would be nice… But if I have to, I’m willing to drive an hour to visit the location. If that isn’t possible, I wouldn’t mind the chance to foster animals inside my home instead of visiting a shelter of some sort.
Fyi, I don’t do well with taking care of sick and recovering animals, this is why I don’t want to become a vet… I just want to provide love and care for pets that was never offered or was taken away from that kind of environment.
I’m 17, about to turn 18 so it would have to work with my collage classes soon. I also want to know if I should take any specific classes that will help me in this field of volunteer work?

Cans and Virgo:Crap parents!!?
Question by maddy: Cans and Virgo:Crap parents!!?
I have a pair of cockatiels, I have done a bit of research about breeding so i am pretty sure everything is right, eg food, water, shelter.
Okay here is what happens, they mate, they lay fertilized eggs, they start to incubate, but then they stop, and they stop sitting on the eggs, and its never at the same time of the cycle. And once they stop, they either start a new bunch of eggs or they wait a month or so and start again. i have blocked off the breeding box a few times because virgs kept laying eggs until there were about 15 and she looked sick, once i blocked the breeding box she was fine again……
any suggestions? why do they always stop?
I think they at least 3 years old, and i have tried removing the box a few times for a few months and still no good
Putting the eggs in a warm place only works if you can get it to be the right temperature and you can roll them over every couple of hours. I know the eggs are fertile because once the eggs have been in there for too long i take them out and see whats inside them, i know it sounds gross but it provides me with some anwsers …. If my birds simply dont want offspring, where can i get myself a incubator? I live in Australia….

Try putting the eggs in a warmer area to sort of incubate them if the mother stopped sitting on them. That way you can ensure that they still hatch at least. Cockatiels are very pretty birds, especially when they are babies.

I changed my look now my bird hates me?
Question by Stormi: I changed my look now my bird hates me?
I know cockatiels get upset when you change things in their room and change your shirt and even your face. But what should I do. I just got him about 2 weeks ago and the whole time Ive been really sick so he hasn’t had a chance to see me with makeup on and my hair fixed, all he’s seen is no makeup and my hair thrown up so its out of my face. My question is, now everytime I walk into the room he gets mad at me, should I avoid him until I get home and take my makeup off or just try and act normal (ive been doing) and hope he comes around cause I normally wear makeup. He kinda came around (when I gave him a wheat thin). So what are some of your opinions? Also, so he would get used to me I’ve been spending so much time with him (and he loves no makeup me) and when I leave the room he cries for my attention, thinking when I come back he will see normal me. Im sitting in his room typing this and he is just looking at me.
So what do I do?
Thank you very much for every answer I get

birds don’t react quickly to change. i would start by just wearing a little makeup around him, and a relaxed hairstyle. then, after he (or she) has been used to that for a couple days, go a step further. He/she should be comfortable with you no matter what, so this is a good way to start. Hope this helps!

Why are my lovebirds not eating or drinking water?
Question by V: Why are my lovebirds not eating or drinking water?
I recently got 2 lovebirds as a gift from a friend they are both males but they grew up together in the same cage so they get along really good. No fighting or anything. Anyhow i got them Wednesday which is two days ago and had put them fresh food (the same as the one they were eating in the aviary) and fresh water. Well the food up to this day hasn’t been touched and I have not seen them drink water either. They tend to sit together in one perch and just look out the cage. They look really calm and sing here and there but that is about it. They are not active at all so far. They don’t look sick but they are just sitting on that one perch. I’ve been reading and some people say its “normal” since they have to get used to their new environment but my concern is just how long can they go without eating that I have to see that its no longer a “normal” process??? This has become a bit sad for me as I am a bird lover and hate to see this happening. Has anyone gone through a similar experience??? I’ve had cockatiels before and never had that problem when i got them. But never have experienced with lovebirds. Please answer if you really have knowledge about lovebirds and their behaviors, ect! Thanks in advance!
Thanks for the answers, makes me feel a bit more relieved! And yes by “singing” i did meant more like chirping and noises :0) Thanks again! I guess I will just wait patiently for them to get adjusted!

Answer by Trust Me I’m a Doctor ?
They will be fine, just adjusting to their new surroundings, they will be drinking when you are not looking, surely you are not looking at them 24 hours a day? They will eat when they are hungry. Do not keep putting new food in just leave them be.
Lovebirds do not “sing” I presume you mean they chirple and make noises. Don’t worry they will be fine. I’m not sure 2 male lovebirds will live happily ever after but you will just have to see how it goes.

How will this effect my bird?
Question by •?MrsLutz?•: How will this effect my bird?
We’ve had this 2 cockatiels, one is about 9 years old (female) and the other is about 4 years(male). They are mates, but the female became sick. The vet recommended that we put her down. but if we take her out of the cage, the male starts screaming like mad. They’re always together. They’re like a married couple of four years. The male always screams when we take her out and go cuddle up next to her the second we put her back. Should we put him down with her (he’s perfectly healthy) or will he adapt with a new mate??
PLEASE HELP!!

Answer by Dee
Its gonna be hard for the male no matter what. He will accept another female but it will take time. I wouldn’t put the male down. Good Luck
