Why is my cockatiel sitting this way?

Question by B L: Why is my cockatiel sitting this way?
Hi, I got a my first cockatiel a week ago and he is two years old. For some reason he sits in the bottom corner of his cage from time to time and if I try to give him scratchies or food he lashes out biting. He also only seems to chirp on the mornings. I have had him out of the cage and he likes to climb up my arm onto my shoulder. I thought it might be boredom so I purchased a few toys yesterday and I have put them on the table next to his cage so he can get use to them. I have been changing his water and seed daily and tired to introduce him to vegetables but he only seems to want broccoli. What more can I do? Should I see a vet?

Seems Like Lonliness or Boredom to me, make sure the bird is not by a window and has a large enough cage. E-mail Freevetelp@yahoo.com if you have more questions

taming an older cockatiel?

Question by S.: taming an older cockatiel?
i have a 15 year old cockatiel who is not hand tame, and i want to try to tame him but i’m afraid that he’s too old to become comfortable around people. he’s extremely clumsy and fearful of just about everything, including most toys and food treats… even a mirror freaks him out. he does come out of his cage when he wants to and likes to walk on the table around his cage, and he can whistle a little tune i taught him, but it’s taken years for him to get to this point. i’ve tamed young budgies and lovebirds before, but i’ve never tried it with an older bird. any effort i make to tame him seems to seriously stress him out… has anyone been able to accomplish this? any advice?

a little background info: about 6 years ago i found him in my backyard, and he had been injured by a cat (which i’m sure was pretty traumatic). i took him in and he’s now very healthy and enjoys my family’s company, but i have no idea how his previous owner(s) treated him.

I would suggest taming him by giving him treats as you pass by for a few days. Then try to get him to step up on your finger. If he is seriously stressed out, let him step up on a perch. He should learn to step up. After that, you can take him out.
When he gets scared, you could say something soothing to him, like “poor baby”.

Why is my cockatiel vomiting?

Question by marcalla d: Why is my cockatiel vomiting?
This morning I asked a question about why my cockatiel stopped using it’s legs, well it turns out it has a nasty infection and was not expected to live passed this afternoon.
We took her to the vet to find all this out of course, they gave her two different shots, one was an antibiotic, and the other I am not sure of.

Well it is now 7pm and she is still alive, looking much better than what she was this morning, she is walking around now. However, she keeps vomiting.

One close friend who has hand reared many kinds of birds said that she is still very young (6-8 weeks, even seller was unsure 100% of correct age) so it should still be on soft / runny food off a spoon, where as the seller just gave us a bag of seeds with it, and told us nothing more.

The bird has vomited about 4 times in 2 hours, and is refusing to eat.

I am aware it is likely that the bird will pass during the night, it is a miracle she has even recovered to this extent, but was wondering if anybody could offer advice?

And yes, I HAVE called the vet, but they avoided the question and said that if she makes it through the night they will have some medicine waiting at the Surgery tomorrow morning.

well, being a one month old cockatiel, it is probably very frightened and nervous. Try putting its cage in an area with more people, or just spend more time around the cage. Try to talk gently when cleaning/feeding. ( My one friend hums drinking songs to his parrot.) Most importantly though is to give the bird time. It needs to adjust and become comfortable. It could take weeks to months, just give it time, but if you rush to handling it, you will make your troubles worse, even permanent.

Sounds like you are on the right track. With him being a baby it is a great time to get the trust and friendship established. Remember the more contact you have with him the better it will be for the both of you.

Why has my cockatiel suddenly started biting???!!!?

Question by narmstrong452: Why has my cockatiel suddenly started biting???!!!?
I have a 4 month old cockatiel that i had purchased about a month and a half ago. I had bought her because she was just the sweetest little thing. She loved to cuddle and fall asleep against my cheek. Suddenly about a week ago she had turned into a mean little birdy. Every time i tell her to step up on my finger she bites me, i pet her and she bites me, she will no longer cuddle on my shoulder and shes just JUST MEAN!!! I make sure that she receives at leased 10 hours of sleep in a covered cage, i change her food and water regularly and i take her out of the cage to play whenever i get a chance. Its not like im neglecting the darn thing!!! Please help. What is going on with my birdy!!!!

Reacting will only make it worse..When it bites and you yell ouch and move away..the bird realized he found something that works to get you away from it!
In situations such as this, the bird needs to first taken to a vet to make sure that it is not ill or in pain. 2nd, recent events pertaining to the environment can be reviewed to see if the bird is upset about something that recently happened. If no illness is found, the bird can be removed to a quiet area or left alone for a while. Often, just a little solitude is all that the bird needs to return to its more personable self.

give him time, they do get used to you more and more as time goes by. he is still a baby, that’s what they do.i have 3 babies at this time 1 is a week and a half old and when he hears my voice he hisses. that is natural behavior. you are doing a great job, just be patient, good luck with your new cockatiel.
