Why is my cockatiel vomiting?
Question by marcalla d: Why is my cockatiel vomiting?
This morning I asked a question about why my cockatiel stopped using it’s legs, well it turns out it has a nasty infection and was not expected to live passed this afternoon.
We took her to the vet to find all this out of course, they gave her two different shots, one was an antibiotic, and the other I am not sure of.
Well it is now 7pm and she is still alive, looking much better than what she was this morning, she is walking around now. However, she keeps vomiting.
One close friend who has hand reared many kinds of birds said that she is still very young (6-8 weeks, even seller was unsure 100% of correct age) so it should still be on soft / runny food off a spoon, where as the seller just gave us a bag of seeds with it, and told us nothing more.
The bird has vomited about 4 times in 2 hours, and is refusing to eat.
I am aware it is likely that the bird will pass during the night, it is a miracle she has even recovered to this extent, but was wondering if anybody could offer advice?
And yes, I HAVE called the vet, but they avoided the question and said that if she makes it through the night they will have some medicine waiting at the Surgery tomorrow morning.

well, being a one month old cockatiel, it is probably very frightened and nervous. Try putting its cage in an area with more people, or just spend more time around the cage. Try to talk gently when cleaning/feeding. ( My one friend hums drinking songs to his parrot.) Most importantly though is to give the bird time. It needs to adjust and become comfortable. It could take weeks to months, just give it time, but if you rush to handling it, you will make your troubles worse, even permanent.

Sounds like you are on the right track. With him being a baby it is a great time to get the trust and friendship established. Remember the more contact you have with him the better it will be for the both of you.

Why has my cockatiel suddenly started biting???!!!?
Question by narmstrong452: Why has my cockatiel suddenly started biting???!!!?
I have a 4 month old cockatiel that i had purchased about a month and a half ago. I had bought her because she was just the sweetest little thing. She loved to cuddle and fall asleep against my cheek. Suddenly about a week ago she had turned into a mean little birdy. Every time i tell her to step up on my finger she bites me, i pet her and she bites me, she will no longer cuddle on my shoulder and shes just JUST MEAN!!! I make sure that she receives at leased 10 hours of sleep in a covered cage, i change her food and water regularly and i take her out of the cage to play whenever i get a chance. Its not like im neglecting the darn thing!!! Please help. What is going on with my birdy!!!!

Reacting will only make it worse..When it bites and you yell ouch and move away..the bird realized he found something that works to get you away from it!
In situations such as this, the bird needs to first taken to a vet to make sure that it is not ill or in pain. 2nd, recent events pertaining to the environment can be reviewed to see if the bird is upset about something that recently happened. If no illness is found, the bird can be removed to a quiet area or left alone for a while. Often, just a little solitude is all that the bird needs to return to its more personable self.

Question by SaliV: 5 week old cockatiel.?

give him time, they do get used to you more and more as time goes by. he is still a baby, that’s what they do.i have 3 babies at this time 1 is a week and a half old and when he hears my voice he hisses. that is natural behavior. you are doing a great job, just be patient, good luck with your new cockatiel.

I have a cockatiel that just layed her eggs but she won’t come out to eat? What should I do?
Question by Linda H: I have a cockatiel that just layed her eggs but she won’t come out to eat? What should I do?
My cockatiel is a lil over a year old, we have a male bird who’s about 5 yrs old and they’ve never mated. I think it’s because the male is used to us humans and even though he did adjust to the female he never did want to mate with her. But she still made mating calls and now has laid her eggs. She won’t come out to eat or drink water and she is being a protective “mother” and won’t let us get her. I put some food n water in the little home with her but she’s not eating or drinking. I am worried she will die. What should I do? Take away the eggs? She won’t come out at all. Please help ASAP.

Answer by Allison M
Don’t do anything!
Just cover the cage with a sheet and she’ll come out when she’s ready.
They don’t want anyone around because they’ll freak out and think someone or something is going to take their eggs. So yes she’s being a protective mother and she’ll eat when she’s comfortable

tips and ideas for a new cockatiel?
Question by weisse: tips and ideas for a new cockatiel?
i just got a new pet cockatiel. its doing great and sings and talks alot. its eating and playing fine. i do have a few questions, one should i just spray it a little with a bottle meant for parakeets or put a bowl filled in with water so it can bath. also the cage did not come with food containers so i cleaned some small smooth dishes with warm water and put food and water in the bottom of the cage but it wouldnt eat so i rigged of the containers and now there up on its perches and its eating great is that normal that it wont eat out of containers on the cage floor
i also am concerned about the temperature in my house. i live in a finished basement and my parents turn the heat down real far. sometimes in the dead of winter it is about 65 F. i would like to know if thats way to cold for my cockatiel or if i should keep a blacket on the sides and not the front or what. would i be able to use a old electric heating blanket set on low as long as the bird doesnt peck at it

Hm, your bird may prefer to eat off the ground, or may be “afraid” of the ground, which is odd for cockatiels, since they are ground foragers. I once heard of a bird, a Nanday or Black-headed conure I believe, that wouldn’t go on the bottom at all, not even to reach his/her favorite treats.
Whether to spray your bird or let is take a bath in a bowl is up to the bird. If it likes one option, go with it. Cockatiels generally aren’t avid bathers as say, and Amazon, being a species from the grasslands of Australia. With me, what works better is spraying my bird. He gets wetter that way, as he wouldn’t dare let himself go into a pool of water, no matter how shallow! Hope this helps!

It’s been ten years and i started to really care for her she apart of my family and i feel that shes going to die soon and i just want to get her happy and groomed. I would take her to the vet it’s just i’m scared that they with take her away from me because of the conditions shes in. Just imagine a bird that grew up with no grooming or anything. She has lots of food and water but i just want her to be more happy before she dies you know? i have to use my own money too so i dont know how much this vet is going to cost. please help. I’m not going to give her up cause i know i can do this by myself and its my goal to do so.

Ok so I’ve had this type of bird before and if he/she is in extremly bad condition I mean like really really bad I would take to the vet. So u can’t ask ur parents to pay? Well if u can then do it if u can’t just do some research on the average cost on vests for birds

Question by Hannah: Good diet for my breeding female cockatiel?
Hello,
I have a male and female cockatiel and they do breed. They are both over a little of 2 yrs. And yes, they are bonded, very bonded, they love eachother. And My family and I love them. SO can you tell me what would be good food for both of them to eat while breeding? I am buying them cuttle bone today and right now I feed them alot of Gourmet Egg food that has alot of vitamins in it. Thankyou very much:)
also, i would LOVE to be giving them fruits and veggies, but they dont seem interested in them! They dont even try them

So far it sounds like your on the right page!
Your going to want to offer a variety of fruits and veggies on top of their regular food, to make sure they have a well rounded diet! I’ve provided a list, and you’ll want to make sure you do purchase that cuttle bone. The calcium is something your pair will definitely need. I would also keep up with the Gourmet Egg food!
Greens: Kale, Bok choy, spinach, chard, mustard greens, radish, carrot tops, beet tops, dandelion greens (make sure they haven’t been sprayed or collected near a roadway) and just about any other leafy green veggie.
Veggies: Carrots, peas, zucchini, corn, squash, radishes, bell pepper, broccoli, green beans, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, chili peppers.
Grains: Steamed rice (white, brown, wild) cooked pasta, whole wheat and multi-grain bread, popcorn (no butter), bran muffins, polenta, grits, cous cous, sprouted seeds and grains (quinoa, amaranth, millet, teff, kamut, spelt), oatmeal, all natural cereal.
Proteins: Raw sunflower seed (small amounts), chicken, eggs, fish, small amounts of hard cheese such as Jack and cheddar, tofu, cooked beans (lentil, kidney, black, garbanzo, navy, white).
Fruit: Apples (seeds removed), peaches, bananas, melons, mango, pomegranate, oranges, papaya, strawberries, plums, pears, berries, nectarines, cherries. (Please remove all pits from fruit.)
Good luck !
