What happens when a baby cockatiel comes out of the nest for the first time?
Question by Taylor iz my husband!!!: What happens when a baby cockatiel comes out of the nest for the first time?
When the babies first come out of the nest, do they land on a perch or fall to the ground? I also hear that as soon as the babies have fledged the parents will start teaching them to eat seed. Do the parents do this at the food container or on the bottom of the cage?
Thank You

What Food Should I Buy For Parrotlets?
Question by HMTQ – Madge: What Food Should I Buy For Parrotlets?
Hey everyone.
I was wondering… What food should I buy for a parrotlet? I haven’t gotten one, but I’m considering it. I read somewhere a cockatiel mix with sunflower seeds is good. Is this true? I’d also prefer something I can buy in stores, so I don’t have to worry about buying it online if food runs low. Thanks!
Best answer:
Answer by Abby Noble
The Sunflower mix is OK, but a little to fattening. I recommend 50% of common budgie seed and 50% canary seed, thrown in a little sunflower seeds but not to much!

Offer well cooked chicken, turkey, lean meats, fish, hard boiled or scrambled eggs, cottage cheese.Serve your bird these foods when they are freshly cooked.
Offer cooked sweet potatoes or yams, raw or lightly steamed fresh asparagus, cooked beets, fresh beet greens, bok choy, broccoli (leaves, stems and florets), carrots, carrot tops, corn, chicory greens, chard, cilantro, collard greens, endive, fresh sprouts, green and yellow wax beans, kale, cooked lima beans, fresh mustard greens, peas, parsley, pumpkin, red or green sweet peppers, turnip greens, watercress, romaine lettuce, yellow squash, zucchini, dark green lettuces.
Cooked pasta, cooked rice or brown rice, cooked dried beans, baked sweet potatoes, bird bread, whole wheat toast, oatmeal and other cooked cereals, cold cereals (cheerios, shredded wheat and grape nuts), fresh corn and fresh peas are all good sources of carbohydrates.

Is it normal for a cockatiel to feel a little heavy when it is being held?
Question by Cute Bisexual Chick: Is it normal for a cockatiel to feel a little heavy when it is being held?
I was holding my male cockatiel earlier today and noticed that unlike the last time I held him, he felt a little heavy (about the same weight as a small package of blueberries). Is this normal, or does it mean that my bird needs to lose weight? My bird is about 10 months old, eats bran flakes as treats and a seed/pellet food mixture.
Best answer:
Answer by Clumsical of the !MC! Squad
bird obesity is hard to determine because a bird that looks relatively normal could actually be grossly obese. It’s also less common for birds to be overweight, since unlike people and most of our pets, they generally won’t eat more than they need.
But, instead of feeding the bran flakes as treats, try to vary it up a bit and add more fruits and veggies.
He could have just eaten or something, so his crop might have been full, making him feel heavier.

no never the water will rot the food will soon be just seed shells and the poop thing will be messed up and they will most likely kill each other if they are in the same cage with no more food left i recommend a pet day care but for a week……….

What are good treats to give my pet cockatiel?
Question by : What are good treats to give my pet cockatiel?
I recently got a cockatiel from a lady on craigslist Saturday. I was just wondering what treats would be good for my new companion. I’ve heard that birds can get diabeties from surgary food and salty food too. Well thats what they were feeding her, people food as treats not fruits and veggies. What should I do? Please help me, the first positive answer with detail will be rewarded the best answer. Thanks!

you can feed any fruits and vegetable except avocado. Also no chocolate. Hanging the food in creative ways makes it fun for the bird. You can string it up so he can play with it first and then eat it. They love cooked pasta, just rinse it if you boil it with salt. Unsalted nuts are always good in moderation because they are high in fat and are “candy” in the bird world. This also goes for unsalted sunflower seeds.

How to get my cockatiel to try new foods?
Question by Wolf Shadow: How to get my cockatiel to try new foods?
My cockatiel is such a sugar brain and will only eat sugary foods. Like pop chips she got into them one day and ever since then I have been trying to feed her healthy stuff like carrots and stuff but she now thinks that if she doesn’t eat then she will get more chips. She has gone days without eating before! She eats some seeds but I wanted to feed her other things too. What foods should I give her that are healthy and make her stop being an addict to chips!?
Best answer:
Answer by Joan H
That is strange and my cockatiel will not eat anything that is very sweet. He will eat the honey sticks made for them, but that is seed. I doubt that it tastes sweet or he would not eat it. Instead of giving him your treats, give her spray millet and try the honey sticks, since it has all kinds of seed in it anyway. Don’t eat your sugary treats in front of your bird. I know it is hard, but they want to try everything you put in your mouth. Let her see you eat carrot sticks, etc.
