need help with my cockatiel?

Question by Derrick: need help with my cockatiel?
In my family we have a 12 year old male cockatiel we’ve had him for about 10 years now. he used to be very friendly. but in the past year or so he’s become very VERY aggressive when ever you put your hand in his cage even to change his food or water he’ll lunges, hisses, or bites at you. but the wired thing is if your outside the cage and you put your fingers in he’ll lick them and clean them. he only is aggressive when your in his cage or opening the door or trying to let him out. so now that you know the problem how can i fix it how can i get him friendly again and comfortable with my family so we can once again let him out with us. I really hope somebody can help me out. i miss my birds company.

You probably have crossed a hormonal or instinctive barrier- I think your cockatiel believes that his cage is like a “nest”, and wants you move away from his “imaginary eggs”. If you decrease the amount of light he sees (ie. putting him to bed/turning of the lights a hour or 2 earlier), and other breeding-triggers, he’ll probably return to normal. Also, you’ll want to spend more human-parrot time with him, have him ride on your shoulder, sit on the computer when you’re checking your email, and give him treats so he knows you aren’t a threat.

I just bought a cockatiel, can someone answer a few questions?

Question by hihihihihihi: I just bought a cockatiel, can someone answer a few questions?
I just bought a cockatiel, male by the looks of it (was constantly whistling and jumping in the cage at the store).

I brought him home about 2 hours ago, and ever since he has stayed in one spot in his cage, and it looks as if he’s shaking.

He hasn’t touched his food and water, so I’m a little worried about that.
If someone could give me advice and overall tips about what I should do and not do, it would be great!

Also, how long should I let him go undisturbed? All I have done so far is put a stationary hand inside his cage.

All help appreciated!
Forgot to mention he’s 8 weeks old, and hand-fed.

He’s probably just scared. Coming to a new home is an awfully big step in a young bird’s life! Do you know how old he is?

Assuming he’s a young bird, his only “job” for the next few days is to eat, drink and poop. Some very young birds, when they go to new homes, “forget” they have been weaned and should be eating on their own. Watch him carefully and monitor his food and droppings. If you’re at all worried about whether or not he’s eating, call the store immediately. If his droppings look very dark and on the dry side, that’s a sign he’s not eating enough. You might also want to be sure he has plenty of millet in his cage. Millet is one of the first foods a weaning baby learns to eat and it’s often “comfort food” for them. Don’t be too surprised if he eats mainly millet for the next few days.

Other than that, just spend time near him, reading or watching television and talking to the little guy. Give him time to settle in and start feeling comfortable in his new surroundings. Once he’s used to you a little you’ll have plenty of time to start working with him.

Since he’s only been home two hours, I’d say he’s acting pretty normally. Try not to worry. But do watch his intake and output and give him plenty of millet. And enjoy your new companion! Cockatiels are a wonderful choice :-)

Can I get a cockatiel with my parakeet?

Question by ?g???ielle?: Can I get a cockatiel with my parakeet?
I have a parakeet that is sorta hand trained. She will go on my finger without biting. But When she is by a mirror, on top of her cage or in her cage I need to use a pencil or glove. I feel like she is lonely and I would like to get another bird. I want a cockatiel because I wanted a bigger bird and I heard they are much sweeter. I just need to know how big of a cage I should get for both of them, if i can feed them the same food and how long does it take till i can put them in the same cage?

It’s not advised to mix the two types of birds in a single cage. They could hurt each other. If you are going to get a new, bigger bird, you could keep them in separate cages and have the cages near each other. You could also try supervised play-times outside of their cages to see if they can be gentle to each other and be friends.

Most birds will go to sleep if they are in the dark. Try getting a cage cover or a blanket to put over the cage when she is being noisy.

Is there a way to train my cockatiel not to bite?

Question by Bubblefish: Is there a way to train my cockatiel not to bite?
Hi everyone,
I have a 4-month old cockatiel for a month and I know she likes nibbling and pecking but I think she is turning it into biting (although it never draw blood but that hurts) recently. She likes to ‘bite’ when having her ‘table’ food (I have to hold it for her since she only eats her seed in her cage but never veggies or fruits where she likes to sit on me and eat those stuff), she starts biting my finger when I’m not looking. I told her told then she bites even harder until I yell at her.

Also, if she dislikes something that I’ve done she sort of hissing at me then pretending to bite (never hurt me though) in order to scare me away. I yell at her then she stops.

I put her back in her cage if she bites me over 3 times in a roll. And I believe she gets the message and she didnt ‘call’ me back to let her out the cage when I ‘punish’ her this way. However, she be doing the same thing again next time. I wonder how everyone ‘teaches’ the birds and how to change their bad behaviour.

I also wonder if cockatiel doesnt like belly rub coz mine pretend to attack if she sees my fingers going to touch her belly.

P.S. I know my bird is very attached to me and she’s a very loving bird in general apart from the biting bit.

the trick is every time she bites someone reward her with a cyanide pill. this will stop her from biting people.

EMERGENCY (about my female cockatiel) PLEASE HELP!!!?

Question by foreveramber8806: EMERGENCY (about my female cockatiel) PLEASE HELP!!!?
I was just suddenly awoken to the sound of my female (less than a year old/year old) cockatiel in severe distress running accross the bottom of her cage. She was in a state of panic!

It has happened before and I’ve gone to her and calmed her down and she was fine.

However, THIS time……… when I picked her up there was BRIGHT RED BLOOD coming from the area where the poop comes from.

I am in shock and very scared. Like I don’t want to go back to sleep because I’m afraid something is going to happen to her in the night!

I also noticed that she lost a feather during her chaos and when looking closely at it is seems to be a blood feather. The end tip (that goes towards/in her body) had blood on it but after looking closely the very tip of the end was soft.

I took out her treats (all except her millet) and just left her plain food and water.

Is THIS normal for her or should I panic? I can’t do anything for her tonight (vet wise because it’s already late)
I am pretty sure it was definitely coming from her rear!!! I watched it falling!!! =(
Also, for now it seems as though the bleeding has stopped but I will be watching!!!

THANK YOU ALL!!!!!!!
Feather seems to have just come out during her panick. She doesn’t seem any different than normal. She is now calm on her perch but you can tell the ordeal got her nerves!

Answer by adrienne k
she may be trying to lay her first egg you need to watch her to make sure it doesn’t get “stuck” that can kill her.

sometimes a lite massage to her under belly near there will help.

if its a blood feather and she continues to bleed from it go to the store and get some blue kote or bag balm that will help curb the bleeding.

but if you can’t get anything to work don’t hesitate to take her to the vet. there’s nothing worse than having your loved one die and thinking you could have done more.

Trouble shooting for baby cockatiel that does not want to eat seeds?

Question by Ami: Trouble shooting for baby cockatiel that does not want to eat seeds?
I need some help, my baby cockatiel, Sid is a month and a half your old and he does not want to work for his food. I have been handfeeding him Exact’s baby bird formula, and he is now slowly starting to eat seeds. He will eat the seeds for a little while, but then he will stop. He is not wanting to eat enough to fill him. I make sure that he is fed so that he doesn’t starve, but I have also been trying to incorperate more seeds.

Help?
~Thanks
The seeds I am talking about are both mullet and regular seeds. And he tends to go for the regular food more often than not.

Answer by Black_sun99
He shouldn’t be on an all seed diet. You should try more soft foods. I wouldn’t even offer seeds. Seeds = FAT.

Absolutely get another bird!

However make sure to take all your old birds toys, and cage, and everything and wash it outside, or in the tub with bleach water. Make sure to rinse it really well. You don’t want any bad germs to transfer to your new buddy.

I looked up the bird protector thing. I don’t really think you need one. I have a parrot and she is 19 years old and has never had lice or mites and we have never used anything like that. Unless you have a mite or lice problem, I wouldn’t bother buying one.

Best wishes with your new buddy! :-)
