Is my cockatiel pregnant and if so what do I do?
Question by andrea: Is my cockatiel pregnant and if so what do I do?
My Cockatiel is tearing the paper in her cage and looks like she got fatter. I think she’s making a nest. She may be pregnant but there would be no baby in her egg if she is. because she never mated.
Best answer:
Answer by Budgie+Dogs
First off, birds do not get pregnant, they are not mammals, they lay eggs. Also, when a bird has an egg in her, she will not get fat. They are not like humans, instead, on the lower cloacal their will be an egg-sized buldge.
If your bird is not mated with anyone, than there is nothing to worry about. She will either drop the egg or attempt to create a clutch. If she drops them, you can simply remove the eggs. However, if she lays an egg and sits on them, she is trying to establish a full clutch. Do not remove any of the eggs, if you do, she will believe that a predator has eaten them and try to replace the missing eggs by producing more and more until she is egg bound. Because they are infertile, simply let her sit ont hem until she abandons the eggs. At that point, you are no safe to remove the eggs.
During this process, it takes alot of strength and protein to establish the egg. Make sure to feed her high-protein foods such as hardboiled egg including the shell.
I hope that helped, and good luck

How big should a cage be to hold a cockatiels?
Question by Felecia Burgett: How big should a cage be to hold a cockatiels?
And, how big (length and width) should one be to hold two?
Best answer:
Answer by muddpuppie
the rule of thumb for a cage for any bird is the bigger the better, get the biggest one you can afford for the space you have…. a 24x24x34 will be good for 1 cockatiel that gets out of the cage every day, but not for one that doesnt get to come out.. i have 4 cockatiels in a 2x4x6ft.. and they have room to fly and get to come out of the cage every day, also have a single cockatiel in a 24x34x34 and he comes out every day

Is there something wrong with my cockatiel?
Question by Its Cole: Is there something wrong with my cockatiel?
Cockatiel is almost always “cleaning his self”. He will be out o his cage and just start plucking every where. A bunch of white small feathers come fly every where. I’ve only had him for a week, so he maybe he is just molting. Please give me some info on whether it’s bad or not?
Best answer:
Answer by Jen
Are they feathers, or is it casings that could be around new feathers? If he is truly plucking his feathers, he is probably stressed.
When new feathers grow in, there are little white/somewhat translucent casings around them. These are VERY itchy for birds. If that’s what it is, your bird is just molting.
My birds are currently molting, too, and I try to help them get those little casings off by scratching their heads (gently). If your bird lets you, you can break open the casings with your nails when you pet/scratch them. Since he’s new, I wouldn’t force him to let you pet him just yet, but if he lets you go ahead.
Don’t forget that you should try and bathe your bird… because it’s cold outside, make sure your home is relatively warm. I use a spray bottle with warm water and mist my birds… because it’s winter I only do it a couple times per week.

How do I warm up my cockatiel to me?
Question by Noma Fox: How do I warm up my cockatiel to me?
I’ve had a little cockatiel since about the beginning of September this year, and she won’t stop having a nasty attitude. I try keeping her on my shoulder, eventually she flies off and tries to run under her cage and starts hissing. I’m trying to hold onto a treat as she eats it, which she accepts, but once it’s gone she’s back to being mean. Any way I can get her to just…. be nice?

Answer by Liss luvs birds
The best thing to do would be to get its wings cut, then it can not fly and it will then rely on you to help it get off the floor if it falls down and it is so much easy to tame them. Soon they will love you because will understand that you are there to help it and you love it.

“CHASE” MY NEW COCKATIEL
This is my bird “Chase” two days after getting him. 2-27-09. He is about 12 or 13 weeks old. He had a tiny piece of cedar bedding in his right eye the day I went to get him and his third eyelid was very inflamed and irritated, he was very scared of humans. I was told he was a biter, but all he has done to me is just a nip. I believe LOVE will heal all! He has started to sing mostly around 11 to 11:30 at night, but today he started to “tune the pipes” as I call it right after I took the sheet off his cage! We are still working on getting him out of his cage- and thats where I got his name from, I had to chase him around it to get him out, but now I am working with him more slowly and he’s starting to understand that it’s not such a bad thing to have “mom” reach into the cage and get him out, he already knew how to “step up” when I got him. He will sit on my shoulder and play with my hair, although I don’t think he likes my ear because he hisses at it, LOL- and he will hiss when I sniff too! I was told he had bit a guy that was careing for him before I ever got there so I figure Chase has decided that I’m pretty cool and has adopted me! It’s a great feeling. When I have his cage door open he climbs out and to the top of it and he will preen and sing and just talk to himself and just be cute. I will post more videos to show his color change (he’s a white headed grey) and the growth of his wing and tail feathers- speaking of tail feathers, somehow he lost his tail feathers …
I have a male cockatiel with some sneezing problems, is he possibly allergic to something?
Question by a_nguyen504: I have a male cockatiel with some sneezing problems, is he possibly allergic to something?
My male cockatiel has been sneezing a lot in the past 2 months. Could he be allergic to something? The changes I’ve made is that I recently moved to a new location so could it be the weather. I added a banana flavored cuttlebone to his cage. Maybe hes allergic to it? he never uses it he wont go near it. Hes also been ripping up the newpaper i keep at the bottom of his cage. Could that lead to more serious problems? Is the newspaper toxic for him? I bought him some millet spray and he seems happier with it. Any body else had these problems?
Best answer:
Answer by ajaynac
My cockatiel had a bit of a sneezing fit for awhile when he was still alive. He used to have issues with newspaper, especially with colored dye. He’d sit and chew it up until I’d change it back, but that usually never made him sneeze. If he’s around a lot of dust, that doesn’t normally help. But if his eyes look dull or he’s picking at his feathers, he may have a bacterial infection and it would be wise to see an avian vet. They can get him something that helps. My bird used to sneeze at dust or smoke mostly but there were times he sneezed just because he needed to be clipped and his own feathers were making him sneeze.
I hope your cockatiel gets better! It’s no fun to have a sick pet.

No,domestication takes THOUSANDS of years of selective breeding & culling.
You just want to TRAIN.them.
Set several times a day…every day….for weeks. REPEAT the exact cues & actions.
WORK,kid,no magic wand & no mystery.
