Can I put two adult parakeets and a baby cockateil in the same cage?
Category: Cockateil Cage Q&A
Fall Beauty asked:
I have two full grown parkaeets that I have had for four years, that are in a big cage. I saw my neighbors this morning with a cage like mine outside with two parakeets and a cockateil in the same cage. I was thinking about getting a baby hand-fed cockateil anyways, but can I put all three birds in the same cage, or should I just scratch the idea and get a separate cage for the cockateil?

I dont think so because they will probably fight with each other but if you want to make sure call the pet store im sure they will answer your question and give you some future advice
You could, but it’s not really recommended.
It’s always a hit and miss thing, like with fish. You could, but shouldn’t necessarily.
A cockateil cage wouldn’t cost much. I’d just go ahead and do that. :] Keep them all happy and stress free.
The two species need separate cages. Budgies (if that’s the kind of parakeets you have… I’m guessing yes because most people who have different parakeet species say which ones they have) are known for being bullies to other birds and could very easily gang up on and kill a baby cockateil, especially if the cockateil just pops into the parakeets’ cage because they don’t want a stranger suddenly deciding to live in their territory.
Also, no matter the parakeet species, the cockateil would have to be quarantined in a separate room for at least a month anyway. This is important because a bird can have a contagious illness even if it doesn’t show it (birds don’t show their illnesses until it’s really bad), and if the cockateil is sick, you don’t want it getting the parakeets sick.
I don’t think that you should put them in the same cage. The parakeets would probably fight with the cockateil b/c it’d be invading their space/home. When we first got birds we just got one parakeet, then a little while after that (prolly 6mo at themost) we got another parakeet, and the older one did not like the new on in its home. We ended up keeping them in separate cages b/c of the constant fighting.
