need help with my cockatiel?

Question by Derrick: need help with my cockatiel?
In my family we have a 12 year old male cockatiel we’ve had him for about 10 years now. he used to be very friendly. but in the past year or so he’s become very VERY aggressive when ever you put your hand in his cage even to change his food or water he’ll lunges, hisses, or bites at you. but the wired thing is if your outside the cage and you put your fingers in he’ll lick them and clean them. he only is aggressive when your in his cage or opening the door or trying to let him out. so now that you know the problem how can i fix it how can i get him friendly again and comfortable with my family so we can once again let him out with us. I really hope somebody can help me out. i miss my birds company.

You probably have crossed a hormonal or instinctive barrier- I think your cockatiel believes that his cage is like a “nest”, and wants you move away from his “imaginary eggs”. If you decrease the amount of light he sees (ie. putting him to bed/turning of the lights a hour or 2 earlier), and other breeding-triggers, he’ll probably return to normal. Also, you’ll want to spend more human-parrot time with him, have him ride on your shoulder, sit on the computer when you’re checking your email, and give him treats so he knows you aren’t a threat.

I love my Cockatiel, but he is driving the family insane!?

Question by Miss_Munky: I love my Cockatiel, but he is driving the family insane!?
I have a male Cockatiel named Captain. We have had Captain since he was under a year old and he is now 7. He has always been a good bird and we never had any problems with him.
He doesn’t like to be held very much, but he loves when we talk to him and he has learned some funny mimics and songs over the years. We did have two cage mates for him at two separate times, but unfortunately both of them passed away at early ages. It had nothing to do with Captain, it was more bad luck than anything. But Captain does have plenty of toys and snacks to entertain him. And of course, we often talk to him and play music, etc.
But recently he has started this extremely bad habit which is driving everyone insane. We cover his cage every night before bed and he will be quiet all night until it is about 5 am. Then he’ll start shrieking and screaming which wakes the whole house up. We’ve closed all the windows thinking that maybe he hears the other birds singing outside, but that didn’t help. We pulled down all the shades to keep the room dark, but that also didn’t help.
My family doesn’t wake up until 6:30 am. Now we have to listen to Captain shrieking and screaming for an hour and a half. Does any have any ideas how we can get him to stop?
Thanks for any advice that you can offer!

Is my cockatiel pregnant and if so what do I do?

Question by andrea: Is my cockatiel pregnant and if so what do I do?
My Cockatiel is tearing the paper in her cage and looks like she got fatter. I think she’s making a nest. She may be pregnant but there would be no baby in her egg if she is. because she never mated.

Best answer:

Answer by Budgie+Dogs
First off, birds do not get pregnant, they are not mammals, they lay eggs. Also, when a bird has an egg in her, she will not get fat. They are not like humans, instead, on the lower cloacal their will be an egg-sized buldge.

If your bird is not mated with anyone, than there is nothing to worry about. She will either drop the egg or attempt to create a clutch. If she drops them, you can simply remove the eggs. However, if she lays an egg and sits on them, she is trying to establish a full clutch. Do not remove any of the eggs, if you do, she will believe that a predator has eaten them and try to replace the missing eggs by producing more and more until she is egg bound. Because they are infertile, simply let her sit ont hem until she abandons the eggs. At that point, you are no safe to remove the eggs.

During this process, it takes alot of strength and protein to establish the egg. Make sure to feed her high-protein foods such as hardboiled egg including the shell.

I hope that helped, and good luck

I just bought a cockatiel, can someone answer a few questions?

Question by hihihihihihi: I just bought a cockatiel, can someone answer a few questions?
I just bought a cockatiel, male by the looks of it (was constantly whistling and jumping in the cage at the store).

I brought him home about 2 hours ago, and ever since he has stayed in one spot in his cage, and it looks as if he’s shaking.

He hasn’t touched his food and water, so I’m a little worried about that.
If someone could give me advice and overall tips about what I should do and not do, it would be great!

Also, how long should I let him go undisturbed? All I have done so far is put a stationary hand inside his cage.

All help appreciated!
Forgot to mention he’s 8 weeks old, and hand-fed.

He’s probably just scared. Coming to a new home is an awfully big step in a young bird’s life! Do you know how old he is?

Assuming he’s a young bird, his only “job” for the next few days is to eat, drink and poop. Some very young birds, when they go to new homes, “forget” they have been weaned and should be eating on their own. Watch him carefully and monitor his food and droppings. If you’re at all worried about whether or not he’s eating, call the store immediately. If his droppings look very dark and on the dry side, that’s a sign he’s not eating enough. You might also want to be sure he has plenty of millet in his cage. Millet is one of the first foods a weaning baby learns to eat and it’s often “comfort food” for them. Don’t be too surprised if he eats mainly millet for the next few days.

Other than that, just spend time near him, reading or watching television and talking to the little guy. Give him time to settle in and start feeling comfortable in his new surroundings. Once he’s used to you a little you’ll have plenty of time to start working with him.

Since he’s only been home two hours, I’d say he’s acting pretty normally. Try not to worry. But do watch his intake and output and give him plenty of millet. And enjoy your new companion! Cockatiels are a wonderful choice :-)

How big should a cage be to hold a cockatiels?

Question by Felecia Burgett: How big should a cage be to hold a cockatiels?
And, how big (length and width) should one be to hold two?

Best answer:

Answer by muddpuppie
the rule of thumb for a cage for any bird is the bigger the better, get the biggest one you can afford for the space you have…. a 24x24x34 will be good for 1 cockatiel that gets out of the cage every day, but not for one that doesnt get to come out.. i have 4 cockatiels in a 2x4x6ft.. and they have room to fly and get to come out of the cage every day, also have a single cockatiel in a 24x34x34 and he comes out every day
