Why did my cockatiel die all of a sudden?
Question by j3sS!Ca: Why did my cockatiel die all of a sudden?
My cockatiel, Sunny, was fine earlier that day, then at night, I saw him lying on the bottom of his cage, wheezing. Me and my dad drove to the vet, but he died on the way and the vet was also closed.

How do I get my cockatiel to trust me?
Question by UNSC_Corporal: How do I get my cockatiel to trust me?
I’ve had this cockatiel for a little over a week, he’s six months old and wasn’t hand fed by his previous owner. Ok, so the first day I had him I tried to grab him because I hadn’t properly researched at the time to learn that its a really bad idea to do that. I also hadn’t known not to get him a mirror, so I got him one of those… Ok so I stopped doing that, then one weekend I had to leave town and didn’t have the means to take him with me. So I left him at the apartment with plenty of food and water and left the tv on so that he didn’t feel so lonely. I left Friday morning and returned late Saturday during which time, ther must have been a power surge, because the tv was off and he looked freaked out. Then yesterday I left his cage open because he seemed more at ease like this, and when I got back from class, he was perched on a cord, eventually he started unskillfully flying around the room in circles, like he wasn’t a skilled flyer, so I assumed that he was trying to get to his cage so I thought I’d help him get there. This turned out to be a bad idea, because he was flying frantically to get away from me, running into walls and falling to the floor and stuff. I chased him all over the house and eventually throw a shirt and put him back into his cage. (It should be noted thaT during all of this, I was very gentle.) While the bird was out of his cage, I cleaned the cage and removed the mirror and I replace his food often.
I’m asking what I should do, as you can tell it was an eventful week and he’s pretty young. I want to build his trust and stuff, so what should I do to get him to trust me? Thanks

Why does my male cockatiel pluck out his baby’s feathers?
Question by Nora: Why does my male cockatiel pluck out his baby’s feathers?
My male cockatiel has been plucking out his baby’s feathers and the babies are now afraid of him and begin crying when he comes close. They are about 2 or 3 weeks old. This is not the first hatch of babies my cockatiels have had, but we believe it is the first time he does this. For now, we have removed him from the cage to see if the mother will feed them. Why is he doing this and how do we make him stop?
Best answer:
Answer by skydanzer400
You can’t make him stop. I wish you would have said how old he is. Just because this is not the first clutch doesn’t mean he is not too young to be a parent bird. Or maybe the clutches came to close together and he is not interested in being a parent again this soon. What ever the reason, you will have to keep them separated. However, that puts a huge strain on the hen to try to feed and tend them by herself. You need to get some baby bird weaning formula from the pet store. Kaytee Exact is a good one. Don’t try to feed the little ones yourself. Fix a small amount at a time by mixing it with warm water. Mix it to about the consistency of oatmeal. Give it to Mom. Hopefully she will eat it and in turn, feed the chicks. Also make sure her diet includes plenty of veggies, leafy greens, cooked pastas, cooked brown rice, scrambled eggs and so on. She needs all the help she can get to keep those chicks fed and not do harm to her own health. In the future, I’d suggest you now allow this particular pair to ever hatch any more eggs. If he has gotten abusive to this clutch, he is likely to do it again. Sometimes it just happens and there is no obvious excuse.

I recently found an adult male cockatiel, he is still agressive how can we tame him?
Question by skooby2: I recently found an adult male cockatiel, he is still agressive how can we tame him?
He was clearly an escaped pet,he is comfortable in his new cage, he eats and drinks and has started whistling occasionally. I would like to pet him and enjoy him more but he bites. Is it to soon after his experience in the wild? I dont know how long he was free but he was exhausted and hungry, clearly freaked out. Any suggestions on taming an adult bird would be appreciated.

Answer by BMTHESPIAN
Just time and patients. Be around him without trying to touch him to let him get use to you. Then slowly after a week or so begin trying to hand tame him.
I hope took steps to try to find his previous owner before you decided to keep him as a pet. The reason I’m saying this is unfortunately far to many people find lost pet bird and just keep them with out making any effort of find the owner.

I’m not sure if my cockatiel is ill or not, help?
Question by shay: I’m not sure if my cockatiel is ill or not, help?
I bought a 3 month old cockatiel a few days aga, I did not hear the person say that all he was eating was millet and a egg mix product. For a day the bird only had parrot mix food that was low in sunflower seeds then noticed that he was constantly at the food bowl eating.
After a few hours he started to get quite agressive with the food in the bowl so I placed a millet spray in the cage and he went mad over it! I’m not sure if his beak is still too soft to break open the parrot seeds but he ate about half the spray and the rest today. He has not been very chirpy this evening and is puffed up, could he be ill from too much millet? I made sure he was feeling ok with me by stroking his breast for the second time since having him and he was happy for me to do so, but I’m not sure if he is definately ok with me as I lack experience here. I am worried that he is unwell and I won’t have enough time to get him to the vet, please help?

Yes, when birds constantly fluff up their feathers, they are sick. Take it to a vet immediately!

Answer by Ashley
When my cockatiel layed an egg we bought a nesting box from the pet shop. You shouldn’t have to do anything for the baby. The mom and dad should take care of it. You could try and stick in a little box with a whole in the side. You might wanna make sure that their is a way to open and look into the box so you can check on the baby from time to time. Also you could go to the library and find a book or look on google or something for some more info.

How to get a cockatiel used to a new home?
Question by Kylie Curtis: How to get a cockatiel used to a new home?
I’m getting a cinnamon pied cockatiel from a breeder next week. He’s been hand fed and has a great personality. I have a nice big cage ready for him and I can’t wait to bring him home. My question is how can I get him used to a new home as easily and stress free as possible. I have three dogs already(don’t worry, the birdy will be in my room and the dogs are NEVER allowed in there) and they get noisy sometimes, so would that be a factor? Also, what are some toys they really enjoy and treats that are healthy? I’ve had birds before(lovebird, sparrow, parakeets) but Im new to cockatiels, so I wanna be as prepared as possible.
Also I named him Cinna after an old Final Fantasy character :3

Answer by LS
It should be pretty easy, you’re taking care of the important parts like keeping him safe from the dogs.
Make sure the cage is in a corner so he feels secure, and that it has a cover that blocks out a lot of light (a piece of fabric like a doubleknit or a denim or twill is fine, leave it partially draped (half) until he feels comfortable. Make sure he is not in a draft or full sunlight with no protection.
They need perches, enough room to stretch their wings, and some chew toys or millet sprays, etc. A high quality seed mix is important.
Do not get a mirror or your bird will not bond with you, and if you have a mirror in your room, seriously, drape it until he does bond to you.
If you are training him to speak, you can make a recording and play it when you leave. He’ll learn a lot faster.

Is my cockatiel plotting to kill me or hurt me?
Question by Fsd Jhjk: Is my cockatiel plotting to kill me or hurt me?
I know this might sound kind of silly but I think my cockatiel might be plotting revenge on me.
I always treat her well, she flies daily with other birds, snacks, clean food and water, toys and head scratches that she loves.
But every morning she flies over to me and sits by my bed (sometimes the cage is open).
She just sits and stares at me and walks around on my chest.
I wake up and find her staring at me wide eyed and she comes really close to my face and rubs her forehead against me.
do you think she may be plotting revenge against me for keeping her in a cage sometimes?
