Can I give my cockatiels raw corn cob? Should the nesting box be on the floor or top inside cage?
Question by TangTang: Can I give my cockatiels raw corn cob? Should the nesting box be on the floor or top inside cage?
Should I boild the corn cob before I serve it to my cockatiels or give it raw? Do I boil potato to soft to serve or must I mash it? My cage is +- 30″wide, 18″deep and 17″high. Now the nesting box is mounted inside in the top corner, but should it be on the floor of the cage? How about when the babies need to move around the cage and leave the box?

Cockatiels LOVE corn on the cob – wash and give it raw. Not too often, once a week is fine. Raw vegetables should be given always. Mine like peas from the pod, it’s their favourite treat! I successfully bred a family indoors, place the cage up as high as you can, position a perch close to the entrance so they can hop in and out. If they produce eggs – leave them alone, or risk being pecked by Mum! They are wonderful parents. Once eggs start to appear, don’t panic if they don’t sit on them immediately, they can lay up to 10 eggs over a few days (my max was
and once they are all layed – then they will sit on them. Dad will sit in the daytime and Mum at night – usually. Get some Egg Food from the pet store (EMP is a good one) I usually mix it will a drop of warm water and put a little bit of smooth peanut butter with it – they love this dry crumbly mash! Also, when chicks have hatched they use it to feed them – so you will need to keep a supply handy. Not too much greenstuff, specially lettuce (which is not good for them, gives them the runs!) . The chicks will eventually venture out and hop onto the perch outside their nest – the rest is up to them. Clear swings and stuff out of their way as they are very clumsy – I used to let mine fly around the room to start with, closing the curtains first to stop them crashing into windows – they can easily be recaptured once they have attached themselves to your curtains! My birds are now outside in an aviary – they live with three canaries and about 30 zebra finches and all get along very well! Best of luck!

What do I have to buy for my cockatiel?
Question by Amber The Ferret: What do I have to buy for my cockatiel?
I’m getting a cockatiel in 3 weeks, I’m getting him at a shelter, then going to an almost non-animal selling pet store.(All they have is fish, but they are kept in big tanks that are clean, and they have good food and are not overcrowding, I read reviews about and saw them myself) But anyway, what should I buy? I don’t wan’t the budget too high, but I’m also not cheap. I need to know what size cage to buy, how many toys, and what kind are safe to buyand they love, also what kind of treats, food, bedding, and anything else I need. Please help!
Also, if there is any good cockatiel care websites that you know of, please tell me.

Purchase the largest cage you can afford. When I first got my cockatiel I bought her a variety of toys like ladders, stuff, to shred mirrors just make sure ever thing is safe before you put it in her cage Like if she can get her head stuck or a toenail snagged on something. I also bought mine different size perches. I put black and white newspaper on the bottom of her cage but she has a grate over it so her dropping never come in contact of her. Poop off is good for cleaning of the cage. Ask who your buying your bird from what they feed her and purchase that pellets are best. I also have a mineral block in her cage as well as feeding her greens like spinach and stuff. I could go on and on. You should check out the website www.cockatielcottage.net It has a lot of good info.
Hope I helped

Does anyone have the hagen vision large and tall cage for birds?
Question by Matthew Barlow: Does anyone have the hagen vision large and tall cage for birds?
I’m going to be getting a cockatiel soon and I wondered whether it was a good cage for a bird that size.
Also, does it keep in the mess as it claims on the website?

I think thats the one I have. The one with tall clear plastic all around the bottom? I have that cage for my tiel. He really likes it and so do I. It does keep a lot of the mess in. Of course it can’t keep every piece of seed and dander in the cage, but it helps a ton. I would definately get it if I were you. I haven’t been dissapointed.

What Should I Do With This Bird?
Question by Mirth Fortune: What Should I Do With This Bird?
A Week ago My vet was trying to re-home a pigieon (Archangel) and gave him to me. I took him for a week to see how well he tames. He has tamed well and fits in very nicely here, HOWEVER!!!!! Here is where it gets sticky, I have a 7 month cockteil that I got while he was still weaning off. I have school and other life stuff for me to attend to. I don’t feel as if I can/am spending my time equally bettween them and that I am not able(with 2 birds) to give them both the time they dezerve. They are both wonderfull creature and I hate to let one go, but I wanted to know what other thought.
One major problem I have with this is that the vet that I would have to return him to, is NOT an avain vet! He knows close to nothing about him, as how to hold him so he is comfterble with people and what to feed him. When I picked him up they had been feeding him wild turkey feed. He said he had a friend that would take him, but it sounds as if this friend might just have a coup outside. He is pretty socail and I don’t know if he can ajust to being in my room to being outside.
Cons:
I do dearly love him and would love to keep him
The Vet knows close to diddly-squat about birds
Don’t know if he can adjust to being outside in a coup
Pros:
My cockateil with get the attention he needs
The Pigeion will beable to fly more (Possibly)
I really don’t have enough time for them both.
I am probobly going to bring him back, even if I love him, It’s unfair to keep a bird that I don’t have the proper time for. It’s also unfair for my cockateil, he was my first real pet of my own and he love me dearly. I hope someone can tell me what they think. PLEASE HELP

I know you said you don’t have time but could you possibly find someone else to take the bird who knows a little bit more than say your vet and who might keep the bird in a similar situation (inside) like you do? Ask friends and other bird lovers that you know if they’d like to take the bird in. This way your cockateil will get more attention, the pigeon will too, and hopefully the pigeon will be taken care of better by the person rather than the vet. Good luck!

Cockatiel Owners Need Ur Help?
Question by Jewels: Cockatiel Owners Need Ur Help?
Hi everyone…I have a simple question and hope you can help!..I have a 6 month old Cockatiel that was hand raised as a baby… He’s going through his first molt and has started to make sounds just like a baby would when they see the food coming…I was wondering what the heck is going on?..He’s very friendly but this is something new…
I wanted to add he’s very healthy and eats good..Gets pellets and fresh foods..Is very active and never caged up all the time..He’s always out playing during the day..He just had a check-up and everything is fine with him..Just wondering why he would make baby noises again 6 months later…
One more detail (sorry!) Trying to give as much info as I can..He only does this when I’m talking to him and showing him love basically…
Thanks guys..He’s not being aggressive at all..He’s very sweet even though he’s molting..I think maybe because he was handfed he’s just showing me affection by making those noises..I dunno! LOL
Dana…Yes, I’m sure it’s a boy..Had his vent checked and all..

Well, maybe that’s how it is when cockatiels molt. I have two cockatiels, but they are already a year old. So, I don’t really know.

Can a female cockatiel and a male parakeet actually make a fertile egg?
Question by Lexi: Can a female cockatiel and a male parakeet actually make a fertile egg?
I have a female cockatiel (daisy), male parakeet (danny), and two other female paraketts but I actually caught daisy and danny mating. This was about a couple of weeks ago and today i found a broken egg in the cage. Im not sure if it was fertile or not. So naturally we weren’t prepared so there was no mating box. I really don’t know what to do.

Cockatiel won’t sing/play?
Question by shiamsleeping: Cockatiel won’t sing/play?
I have a female cockatiel that I got a week ago. She’s pretty young, but I’m not sure about the age. I’ve heard her chirp a grand total of five times, and while I know that females aren’t very social, I’m slightly worried. Also, she doesn’t play. She just sits in front of her food or on her rope as high as she can. I saw her bite a plastic toy today, but she pretty much ignores the bird kabob/pedi-perch. Also, how long will it take for her to learn how to speak if she does? I try to repeat word/songs as often as I can and associate them with actions.
Best answer:
Answer by Bla Bla Bla
It sounds to me like your teil doesn’t know how to play with toys.
Its sad because it means she was deprived of necessary stimulation.
On the other hand, she’s only been in her new home a week so she’s still stressed and uncomfortable, maybe she has more important things to worry about than toys right now.
Teils rarely talk or sing, they are not parrots.
Teils especially like to whistle, so find a CD of whistling songs and play that for her instead.
