my cockatiel has laid eggs!!!!!?

Question by Krystal: my cockatiel has laid eggs!!!!!?
Okay, So i have a female and a male cockatiel, well about 3 days ago, She now has 2 eggs and 1 was broken, I guess she laid it in the food bowl and when they were eating i believe cracked it open, I went to change her food bowl and the egg was there, so i opened the rest of it up and i saw a little sperm in the middle of the yolk. SO I do know these are fertilized… WELL she now has 2 on the bottom of her cage.. I read up on the internet if you dont have a nest then get a bowl with paper towels!! well thats what i did, and her first egg is in that bowl, and she the 2nd one today and its on the cage floor, and she will NOT move from that egg!!!!! she hisses at me if i go around her cage.. which is fine, but im scared she wont even try to incubate the other egg, since shes only incubating the one on the cage floor?? What should I do??

Answer by little angel
Just because you saw what looks like sperm in the egg does not mean they are fertile. If you have not seen your male courting your female and singing songs to her, and have not seen them breeding, these may not be fertile eggs. If they are fertile and she has not been sitting on the other egg, most likely it is no good now. Birds lay eggs every other day when they are breeding, if she is laying everyday chances are they are not fertile eggs. I had a female who refused to breed with any mate we paired her up with yet she laid unfertile eggs. Your birds may, or may not be a breeding pair. Not every pair will breed. Good luck to you and hope you can get some fertile eggs, if you are wanting to breed them. Birds are so much fun.

female cockatiel just laid an egg on bottom of cage but is not paying any attention to it?

Question by Just Jenna: female cockatiel just laid an egg on bottom of cage but is not paying any attention to it?
just over a year ago I adopted a breeding pair of cockatiels from a bird rescue. for the past 2 weeks or so, their behaviour has changed, they had become more vocal, singing and chirping at all hours. I change their food and water dishes daily and tonight i noticed an egg in the bottom of the cage. ut neither the mother or father tiel is not paying any attention to it? what should i do? this is the first egg she has laid so maybe she just isnt sure yet what to do… should i put any nesting materials in the cage or is it too late? is it too late for the baby to survive since neither the parents are sitting on it?
i just went to check on them, and still nobody sitting on the egg, but it has been moved from one side of the cage to the other

I have a female cockatiel that lays a clutch of 12 eggs anually and is healthy. Is the bird young? Immature young female cockatiels and parents often negelect their eggs after they are hatched simply because they don’t know what to do with them. Try encourage them to nest, such as placing a nesting box in the cage and nesting material.

Getting my first Cockatiel.?

Question by mark: Getting my first Cockatiel.?
I’m getting my first cockatiel this Saturday(IT BETTER NOT RAIN). It’ll be mostly an outside bird, but will come in when it’s cold and raining(or either or). I also have more questions.

1)How can I introduce my new cockatiel to my two not so tame parakeets. One’s female and the other’s male. I have a table and the two cages will be put next to each other on the table, but this will be after the quarantine. So how can I introduce them properly? How long should the quarantine be?(one month?)
2)Is “Ash” a nice ironic name for a cockatiel? As they release some dander so that’s where the irony comes in :P .
3)Do you think it’d be able to learn this song?-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzNQ4m2qn3I -I don’t expect to learn the whole song, but do you think it can learn to whistle the beginning of it? It’s pokemon (another source of irony :P )
4)What’s the best food brand for them? I read people feed theirs zupreem for parakeets, is that healthy?
5)I plan on getting a hand-fed tiel, but if I don’t, how can I tame it? How long should I wait to bond with my new bird?
6)How to discourage screeching, and how to get them not to fly away.
*****Thanks!!!*******
If I do get a hand-tamed cockatiel, would him/her being around my two not tamed parakeets make the cockatiel untamed?

If you get a tame bird, don’t put it in the same cage as the other birds. They are raised completely differently and the parrots will reject the cockatiel.

Call your bird whatever you want.

It could learn some of it yes.

Get a food brand that looks good. In Australia we have Trill. Zupreem looks healthy. It also depends on what the bird is currently eating. If you go from seed to pellets it wont work. You need a gradual transition.

If you don’t get a hand fed, tame bird your chances to taming it are near impossible. If its tame you can bond immediately. Birds are such social animals. I would advise getting 2 cockatiels for that reason. Theres only one up front cost.. the seed and care costs next to nothing anyways.

If you want a bird that can learn that song, get a male. It’s kind of a catch 22.. if you get a bird that will learn the song (male), it will be loud.. if you get a female.. it will be quiet and more than likely wont learn the song.

If you don’t want it to fly away then you need the wings clipped by a professional. DO NOT DO IT YOURSELF.

Unless you are handling the bird outside.. i wouldn’t advise it. It puts a lot of stress and discomfort on the bird.

P.s. after a while without bonding with you the bird will become un-tame.

Can a Cockatiel and Budgie live together?

Question by Xena: Can a Cockatiel and Budgie live together?
Can they? Does it matter which sex they are? Like, could I put a boy Budgie and a boy Cockatiel together? I have a GIANT cage. I mean, I could put an Amazon in there and it still have enough room. The main question is, could I put them together?
Would they get a long? The food and everything is mainly the same ( right?) they both come from the dessert, so one doesn’t need more baths than the other.

Please answer!

I can not see, there being a problem, with this idea, but putting two male birds together, you may find them to be aggressive, towards each other.

what do I do for a broken cockatiel wing?

Question by Nicole: what do I do for a broken cockatiel wing?
My 3 year old got into my bird cage and snuck off with my white cockatiel. I found him with all his tail feathers ripped out along with some of his wing feathers ripped out too. His right wing is also broken. I have no money and theyre are no bird vets anywhere near me. What do I do?

Answer by Syncasta
Call one ASAP! It’s better than asking us, because none of us really know what to do.
Even if it’s in another region, call one immediatly.
Keep the bird in a safe spot, with blankets and such, and lots of warmth.
Do NOT disturb him, it will further stress him out!

Cockatiel is pulling out little down feathers off his back.?

Question by Scott: Cockatiel is pulling out little down feathers off his back.?
I’ve had my cockatiel for over a year now, he’s been through his first molt about 3 months ago and made it through like a champ. In the last couple days when he preens he has been pulling multiple down feathers off his back. I know he’s pulling them out because the little shafts at the end have a spot of blood on them and there filled with a watery fluid. when he pulls them out he rapidly stomps his foot and almost loses balance. He has a regular diet of fruits, veggies, sprouts and seed and is out of the cage more than hes in, he has lots of toys that are regularly rotated. I have made an appointment with the vet. I was wondering if anyone else has come across this as i’m a little concerned.

Best answer:

Answer by Harley Drive
feather plucking is supposed to be a sign of boredom but i have come across birds that pluck their own and everyone else’s feathers for no apparent reason it may be a vitamin or mineral deficiency or the feathers just itch too much. It seems they are designed to itch or irritate to encourage the bird to constantly preen

New cockatiel acting strange, some help?

Question by Thumbs Down: New cockatiel acting strange, some help?
I got a cockatiel the friday before this last one. He seems to be already warming up to me and gets a little extra chirpy and seemingly happy when I’m around. He confuses me though (and I’m almost positive it’s a he) because whenever I approach him with my hand, he gets scared and starts moving towards the back of the cage as fast as possible. He doesn’t seem to mind my hand when I have food in it, he’s eaten a lot right out of my hand. Even when there if food there though, sometimes he will still act unsure or scared. Is this something I should just expect to go away with time or is there something I can do? I do not have his wings clipped just yet so I couldn’t take him out of the cage even if he would let me. I never approach with my hands from the side, always from the front and he often will bite me and hiss at times to warn me.
Oh also, when I stick my hand in the cage to put toys in or change food or water, he usually has no problem with it, he’ll just watch me but sometimes he does get a little unsure and starts moving away quickly.

Answer by Phoebe H
Well if the he is a adult or a baby it will take some time for him to get used to you. I got mine when he was a baby so it is easier to train almost all birds tend to get scared when someone tried to get the bird only because it does not the person very well yet but I am sure once your bird gets used to you it will go away you have to pay a lot of attention to birds it will become nice this is to happen more if it a male they are nicer and more talkative then the females they are moody and quiet. Also if you can get the bird out of the cage rub his ears and his neck I do it to mine and he loves it but before you get it you might want to get his wings clipped you can go to a pet store or vet that way if he gets scared he won’t fly off some where and get hurt also trying giving him treats for doing good things like stepping up on your finger or doing a command.

After how many weeks can I take the nesting box out of the cage?

Question by TangTang: After how many weeks can I take the nesting box out of the cage?
My oldest cockatiel baby is 6 weeks old now. The other 2 are 2 and 4 days younger. The mother is laying an egg every 2 days which I have to remove. It’s very sad to do this, but I don’t want to separate the babies from their parents. I tried it and they went crazy. The parents called them and they tried their best to return. I let the babies out to fly around the room every other day. The parents have never been out on their own. I adopted them when they were a few months old. The babies also try eating of the different things I put in the cage. The cage is 90x65x70 is it big enough for 5 cockatiels?

Best answer:

Answer by Conure FeatherDragon
Hey there!

The nest box can come down when the chicks are nine weeks old. At six weeks the chicks aren’t finished weaning and still rely on their parents for food. It’s also normal for the parents to lay while the fist clutch is still in the nest. Its best to keep the eggs with the parents as if you keep removing them, it triggers more egg laying in the hen. The birds see it as a predator has gotten to them, so in an attempt to keep their genes alive, the just lay more eggs. If you don’t want more babies, either poke a hole on one end of the unwanted eggs or shake them really good. Then replace them with mom and dad.

The cage should be okay for five tiels as long as their get their out-of-cage play time.
