Cockatiels Feeding

This feeding was on 08/15/2009 for my cockatiel that was hatched on 06/24/2009. The lighting source was wrong so I thought I would re-record sometime. But it turned out he weaned on 08/16/09! All day he never begged for food but was eating millet diligently. After checking and making sure that his crop was filled with millet, I was glad to learn that he has officially weaned!

It’s not a problem, the grit aids digestion.

If I put a budgie and cockatiel together should i first buy 2 cages?

Question by cowzrkul05: If I put a budgie and cockatiel together should i first buy 2 cages?
I was asking about putting my cockatiel with a budgie. My cockatiel is young just a couple months old. i was told if i wanted my tiel with a budgie I should first introduce them before letting them share a cage. Does this mean I should buy a second cage for the budgie or just let my tiel meet the keet right when it bring it home? I am kind of confused. So my main question is – should i buy a second cage before letting them share one?

Best answer:

Answer by Jordan S
DONT PUT THEM IN THE SAME CAGE. They may attck each other. Also, they both eat differnet food. You can keep a lovebird or a parrotlet with a cockatiel since the all eat cockatiel food. Budgies should always be kept with their own since no bird has similar care rules.

2Questions in one (Cockatiel Help)?

Question by mark: 2Questions in one (Cockatiel Help)?
I’ve had my cockatiel since April 16th this year. It’s obviously not that long ago, but we’ve grown rather fond of one another. He likes my company and I love his whistling and screeching. I got him from a pet store and he isn’t hand fed. He’s from a breeder tho bc he has a bird band around his leg. I do have two questions about him that concerns me though.
1) His feces is REALLY concerning me. I have two parakeets right now and their feces looks A LOT different than his. I know obviously the size of it would matter as he’s bigger than my parakeets, but it looks very different. My parakeet’s feces looks black and white and occasionally all white, but my cockatiel’s feces looks VERY LARGE AND GREEN!!! One of his droppings I saw today looked like a soggy bean and another looked like hard guacamole or something… I feed him strictly pellets and millet when I’m training him. At the pet store, I can’t remember specifically what he ate, but I saw some sunflower seeds in it, and I’m sure if that’s in it, then it’d be a seed diet. He’s been on pellet since I’ve had him. This is the food I feed him: http://www.petco.com/product/12567/ZuPreem-AvianMaintenance-FruitBlend-Premium-Bird-Diet-for-Medium-Birds.aspx

He LOVES the green pellets which I’m more than positive is the reason for the coloring and occasionally eats the red and orange ones if there’s no more green ones. The thing that concerns me is that it looks like it just all splats out (couldn’t think of another way for it not to sound disgusting :/). I haven’t tried feeding him fruits or veggies. All he’s eaten with me is the food and millet for training.

2) Since he’s from a pet store and not hand fed, he’s not really use to people. My little Ash love me as he screeches when I leave and gets all excited when I do our signal whistle (A whistle I do that lets him know I’m there with him). He loves my company and whistles with me in the morning before I get ready for school. He eats millet from me, I hold the base of it with me index and thumb while he holds it. I also hand feed him some of his food( the green pellets he loves so much), but only occasionally takes it from me). I’ve tried almost everything. I try pushing against his feet, but instead he falls off the perch or he slides to the end of the perch, I try holding the millet in a position where he HAS to get on my finger to get it, but he’d rather find another way to get it, or just ignore it in general. Then I thought he finally was gonna get it…. I had the millet in the position again and he was nibbling on my finger, which I thought he was sensing to see if it was a nice decent perch, so I didn’t react to the bite(I don’t react to any other negative behavior like random biting or hissing which he ONLY does at night bc he’s sleepy while I’m trying to train him) and then I got all excited and stood perfectly still, but then I noticed the bites were growing with more and more force until it hurt too much so I told him “NO” in a big firm voice, took my hand out with the millet, and left him. This happened right before I started typing this.

Caging Info: Not housed with keets, it’s like a 36x20x40 cage(LxWxH), has two toys and a ladder to play with while I’m at school, has cuttle bone and grate to separate him from his droppings, and while I’m at school I have my two parakeets outside to keep him some company. He’s for sure a boy as he’s a normal grey cockatiel and it’s obvious to sex them. He hasn’t been outside his cage at all, but he’ll get the chance when he’s at least tame enough to stay on my finger.
*****ME AND ASH APPRECIATE ALL OF THE HELP YOU’D BE WILLING TO OFFER, but will not punish bad behavior with flicking his beak or blowing at him or any of that sort. THANKS AGAIN!!!*****
When he bit me, he bit the tip of my finger nail and if my finger were a toy, he’d rip the whole finger nail off :/

OKay get the bird on a schdule take it very very slow. pick a time of day that you will always be around the easiest would be when you first wake up or maybe right after diner. Wash your hands and make sure they never smell like food. At the same time every day pet the bird or even just talk to it and work up to pettin if the bird is that aggresive eventually you will start to realize that at that time of day the bird will actually start waiting for you maybe coming close to the bars bc he knows your coming. It’s considered to be on eof the best bonding techniques. just take it slow and maybe about every week try to step up the interaction :)

why do my lovebirds regurgitate into my cockatiel’s mouth?

Question by Mawstuhhs: why do my lovebirds regurgitate into my cockatiel’s mouth?
I raised two baby lovebirds and then added a cockatiel. we separated them with a plexi-glass divider to get used to each other, but they ended up getting past it over and over again. so we just let them sit together, since it seemed like they got along.
then I started hearing this weird little chirping noise.. short, quiet chirps in succession. when I looked to see what was going on, either one of the lovebirds would be throwing up into the cockatiels mouth. during this, the cockatiel would lower itself and hold its wings up and kind of open, while bobbing up and down and moving its wings the same way as it received the already-been-eaten food.

why do they do that? they only do it to the cockatiel, never to each other. and they compete for his attention.
the cockatiel is a little bit older than the lovebirds. I would say by half a year or so.

Sounds like the the Lovebirds are treating the Cockatiel like their baby and feeding him. That’s how birds feed their babies right! Sounds adorable!
