My pet cockatiel wont come out of its cage?

Question by Adam: My pet cockatiel wont come out of its cage?
I recently purchased a baby cockatiel which is 11 weeks old. When it is inside the cage it loves me, it kisses from the inside eats from my hand talks to me and the whole lot, however when I put my finger in to let it ‘step up’ it starts to hiss and bite and gets very agitated and aggressive.
Also it doesnt seem to eat properly or drink water, could it have something to do with the fact that shes a baby cause she does struggle in climbing up and down the cage.
it does eat plenty of apples though but im not too sure shes eating to her full potential even though i have spotted her eating some seeds……
Do i just have to wait a little longer so that she gets used to me and the new environment until shell want to come out??

Hi Adam you may like to try this open the cage door with a sheet or such like cover yourself so you are in front of the cage and just stand there quietly with some apple in your hand it will probably take awhile then the next time let a little light in through the cover do this until you are not using the cover at all this will reassure your pet that is ok to leave the cage if it is hissing and biting you try putting your finger behind it and gently pressing against the body of the pet and it will most likely climb back on your finger…but please remember Adam patience is the key when training birds, Cheers Bree

i have a prego cockatiel. help?

Question by mlilgirl0911: i have a prego cockatiel. help?
from the time a cockatiel gets prgnant till the time she lays her eggs, is it okay to hold her? should i leave her alone the whole time? do i even handle her at all? what can i do for her to help her. food, talk. etc.???

Best answer:

Answer by Autumn.
You can pick her up until she lays them. She still needs interaction and everything. Just stick to the regular schedule until she lays. She should have a cuttlebone, or feed her a little bit of egg to help her lay. Remember to take the male out when the eggs hatch. They quickly become territorial and will kill anything, he doesn’t know which ones are his young and which are not.

Can a cockatiel be kept in an outdoor cage?

Question by Av.: Can a cockatiel be kept in an outdoor cage?
If a cockatiel can be kept outdoor, what kind of outdoor cage is best? Any idea where/how to get a climate controlled outdoor cage? Pls note that I am not asking about an aviary… We’re in the Northern California (to give an idea about the weather). TIA!
Thank you so much Sonnie for your suggestions. Thanks to others too for answering my question. I am planning to bring the bird inside at night unless the cage is well protected. Heated perch sounds like a good idea even for the day time. I have a 2.5×1.5.x3′ indoor cage. Do you know where we can get a good outdoor cage?

Removing pin feathers without making bird hate you?

Question by Anna: Removing pin feathers without making bird hate you?
My cockatiel has some feathers covered in a skin, I guess they are pin feathers. It makes him look like he got grass growing out of his head. I tried restraining him so I could roll it off but he cries and stresses out. Any tips or info? And no my bird is not food motivated so treats don’t work.

Answer by Suzi Q
Leave it alone. This is a normal part of the molting process. Molting is stressful, and you are making it worse. The sheaths will break away by themselves. Your bird does not want or need any help.

My cockatiel makes absolutely no noise?

Question by PrincessJinx: My cockatiel makes absolutely no noise?
Hi, I have two pet cockatiels and one is a white cockatiel, unsure of the sex, makes lots of shrill high pitched calls, especially when I leave the room or spend 5 seconds not paying attention to her (we call it a her, again not sure of sex). She also has a playful and pushy personality.
My second one is much more calm and easy going. Not sure of sex but we call it a he, he has an all yellow crest, whitish yellow chest, grayish back and bright orange cheeks. He makes no noise whatsoever. His personality is much more content than the white one, he doesn’t mind staying wherever I put him. At first I thought it was just the personality that made him more quiet, but I would have thought he would make some kind of noise. Is this normal?
I thought it might be a dominance thing also, but there is no indication for that. Neither of them will give the other control over the food bowl/toys/etc its always whoever gets there first keeps control.
Thanks for the answer, but I do not think he is depressed, he gets a balanced diet and loves being pet and playing with me and my glasses, he is just very content to wait unlike the other one. I have quickly learned his signs when he wants something.
When I first brought him home he made a squeak sound. If I poke him, he just bites me and hisses.

Feeding my cockatiel

Here I am feeding my cockatiel Jack. I had to get a video of him since he flew onto my shoulder.

My cockatiel isn’t weaning!?

Question by kirkeye: My cockatiel isn’t weaning!?
I have a 8-9 week old cockatiel and he isn’t weaning! he picks up seeds and and opens them but then just chews the shell and doesn’t eat the actual seed also with other foods i have offered but he doesnt eat them he just chews them into crumbs and leaves them, he does the same thing with newspaper, and he still squarks for between 3-4 meals a day, how can i make him eat the food he keeps destroying without starving him, Help!
No he has no siblings, im a first time owner and he was abandoned by my friends cockatiels in her avary, she doesnt know much about weaning eather because her birds usually do all the work, i’ve wrokd out he is roughly about 11 weeks now and has 3 feeds a day at around 8-9am, 12-2pm and around 5-6pm, doesn’t have night feeds and doesn’t seem interested in much else, he has seeds but like i said before he opens them fine but just chews on the shell, i hope i’m not doing anything wrong because i don’t want him to keep needing to be handfed all the time, very confused!!! help

Some baby birds take longer then others to wean, some 12 weeks, not 8 or 9. Keep feeding and enjoy the baby. It will soon be an adult and won’t want you to baby it. Enjoy the moment.
