Where can I find a cage for a cockatiel?
Question by Maddie <3nett: Where can I find a cage for a cockatiel?
i need a really good cage for a cockatiel around the price of 100 dollars to 130 dollars. i already have one but i think she gets bored from being in there because its so small. It also makes a really annoying echoing sound when she climbs around and i need one that doesn’t make that annoying sound. I would need on that has the plastic coating around the bars and a lot of things to do in the cage for her.
obviously ive tried a petstore, pete. theyre to expensive andi dont feel like driving around untill i have the right store. thats why i asked.

Why did she die?
Question by ~ILoveGlambert~: Why did she die?
I used to have female cockatiel. I also have a male that is still alive at the age of 19 years old Well, our female kept laying so many eggs. She had 3 clutches of eggs. The first one, she laid a total of about 30-40 eggs (I’m not making this up) She laid around the same for the other clutches. We had to throw the ones which were not fertilized(which were basicly all of them) out since she could sit on them all. Out of all the eggs not one baby (im not a breeder) Well luckly she stopped laying for about a year. One day i saw her and she was all puffed up and sick looking. Usually, she would bite anyone who tried to take her out, but this time she didnt care. it was unfortuanly a sunday where no vets were open. i got online and read that if they acted that way they could have egg bound. I took her out and i talked to her and rubbed her belly softly to try and help her, She soon died in my lap. What did i do wrong? i gave her enough nutrients. Why did she die at the age old 6 years old?

I am so sorry you had to go through that. When females lay the eggs, a clutch is only maybe 4-8 eggs. If you take them away too soon, they try to replace them by laying more, which depletes their calcium level. If yours had 30-40 eggs per clutch, obviously, you took them away too soon. By letting them sit on the original eggs, they will lay the appropriate amount and be satisfied. Then after 2-3 weeks, they get tired of sitting on the eggs and it is at that point you should start removing the eggs, one at a time daily. Hope this helps.

My cockatiel stares at me all day long?
Question by Ben Daniels: My cockatiel stares at me all day long?
I have two cockatiels, I got them last Friday from a previous owner. They’re 3-4 years old and are not hand tamed. One of them is very nice and I believe once I start training him that he’ll get it very fast and I can already tell he is more loving than the other one. This one sits contentedly on his perch and plays with toys, and likes to talk to me.
Now this other cockatiel he tends to just sit and stare at me. Not always but it seems the majority of the time he has his crest raised up in an alert position and sits with this odd hunched forward posture. It strikes me as quite aggressive, he’s fine when I approach the cage and the few times he’s flown to other parts of the apartment he’s been more than willing to hop up on my finger and get a free ride back to the cage (I believe both the birds to be cage bound, they hate leaving the cage, though they like to climb on top of it).
I’ve heard that cockatiels by nature are very caring and enjoy attention both vocal and physical, so I can’t believe that I’ve just got a ‘mean’ cockatiel, and I’m sure with enough time and patience (I’ve got a great deal of both) that I can bring him around.
But I’m still curious if this strikes anybody as abnormal behavior? The constantly alert crest, hunched posture, and always staring at me.

Hi. Cockatiels are very social by nature, forming lifelong pair bonds and living in huge flocks. They bond best with people when kept alone, but it is far better for the bird to have the company of another cockatiel. The behavior you report is normal – they differ in personality, the quieter one likely sees you as a threat to its mate (this can happen even in same-sex pairs). Continue to work with the more responsive one but do not try to force affection on the other – it may come around in time. Please see my article on the Natural History of Cockatiels at http://blogs.thatpetplace.com/thatbirdblog/2008/10/10/the-cockatiel-nymphicus-hollandicus-in-nature-%E2%80%93-facts-about-the-world%E2%80%99s-smallest-cockatoo/ for more info on how their natural behavior affects their actions in captivity, and feel free to post further questions there.
Enjoy, Frank

Euthanizing birds…?
Question by Clumsical of the !MC! Squad: Euthanizing birds…?
How do they do it?
I know when my dog was euthanized, they gave her a shot. But I have heard that smaller animals are usually “gassed” (that sounds awful but I really can’t think of a better word for it…)
Next question: Is it important that an avian vet does it or can any vet?
We are going on a day that the avian vet will be there, but I don’t know if they plan on him being the actual person to do it.
I have a cockatiel that is getting progressively more sick and his feet are severely deformed because he’s too weak to stand on the cages anymore so he just lays on the grate and lets his feet dangle down. He also used to pluck his feathers, so he’s bald in some areas and can’t retain heat. We’ve decided that euthanasia is the best thing for him after talking to our avian vet yesterday.

When an animal is “gassed” they are put to sleep using like an anesthetic gas. They wont feel a thing and they will die in their sleep. I am not sure about the whole vet thing though.

Answer by Dave Womach
Kaytee Exact formula is a great formula, I use it for my baby birds as well. Even though your cockatiel is a baby, it needs to live in a cage. If it still has its parents and they aren’t abusive, it can live with them or you can separate it into its own cage. Your baby bird shouldn’t get too cold if you keep the house at a warm tempature for your bird and provide a towel of some sort for him to cuddle into. Baby birds don’t have all their feathers in and are likely to be colder than the average bird.
Cockatiels are sexually mature around a year and a half and will lay as soon as you let them together to breed. Most likely if you put lutino cockatiels together as mates, you will get another lutino baby. Sometimes genetics will surprise you, though.
I have pure white parakeets that I like to breed to get the solid color;

a question related to my question from earlier?
Question by aznsaiyan1029: a question related to my question from earlier?
quote “This is my first time in my life ever having a pet. I got a 8 week old cockatiel, and it is doing fine when i got it. hoever, when i woke up the next morning from the day i got it, it was still sleeping at 9 am. then i went out and come back at 3, it is still sleeping. although its sleeping location changes, I wonder if he is okay. does the young cockatiel like mine sleeps a lot? or is he sick?”
so yea, my cockatiel did not eat at all today, all he did today is sleep. i tried to wake him up and feed him a bit earlier today at 7:00 pm (CST), but he did not eat and go back to sleep. Is my cockatiel really gonna be okay? I am very worried.

Maybe he is bored.
Is he finger trained?
If her is take him out of the cage and let him stretch his wings.
