The cockatiel will stay tame, whereas the lovebird is going to lose that within the next couple years.

My parakeet sits on bottom of cage?

Question by lykes2win: My parakeet sits on bottom of cage?
Is my parakeet sick? He is sitting on bottom of cage. When I put my hand in he squawks real loud. He never did this before. Also, if he is sick and his cage is next to my cockatiel…will my cockatiel get sick? Do I take my parakeet to the vet? What would they do? Should I wait and see if he gets better on his own? Many thanks.

my bird is afraid of her bird bath?

Question by Candy: my bird is afraid of her bird bath?
i have a cockateil and the other day i bought her a bird bath that mounts on the cage but when i tried to put her in it she freaked out also she got in it once on her own freaked out and flew or tried to fly (she cant fly to well) out what can i do birds need to bathe themselves to help keep them clean

Best answer:

Answer by Lexi
Birds do not need to be bathed. Keep the bird bath in her cage, she will probably get used to it. What I did to get my 2 parakeet’s used to their bowl, I lightly splashed in it with my hand and I got my hand wet and I let it drip over the bowl.

My Cockatiel is behaving very strangely!!?

Question by robbie64: My Cockatiel is behaving very strangely!!?
Yesterday my 14 year old femal cockatiel sat in the bottom corner of her cage (she of course is usually up on the perches, or out on me!) she slept for a while down there, then started chewing and tearing up the paper I put on the bottom of her cage. I am worried about her, is she sick? She acts fine other wise. This morning when I left for work she was doing the same thing down in the corner of the cage.
She has never laid eggs.
I am worried about her.
Any suggestions?

Best answer:

Answer by Danielle B
That is nesting behavior, which means she will probably lay eggs. It can start at any time, so age doesn’t matter all that much. The main thing to worry about is the fact your cockatiel is 14yrs- you do not want her to start depleting her own calcium at that age.
First take away all the paper on the bottom. Use a grate if you have to, but make sure that she can not make a nest out of anything. Next- rearraign the perchs in her enclosure. She will also need to be covered or put in a closet for at least 14 hrs a day for night time (until she gets over this episode)
If she starts laying eggs, leave them in there until she abandons them (usually about a month). She will lay one or two before she starts brooding. She will have mega poops when she gets off the eggs from not pooping for a couple hours (so watch the floor!)
Make sure you have cuttlebone (even scrape some over her food as well), and give her a lot of veggies to help replenish that calcium she is going to lose. Not enough calcium can lead to eggbinding, which leads to death in most cases, which is a lot more prevalent in older birds with already frail bones.

What gender is my cockatiel Krinkles?

Question by Koko: What gender is my cockatiel Krinkles?
When I bought her I thought it was a boy because she was brighter that the other bird [the colors are more faded than the usual gray cockatiel though] but then when I noticed the bars under her tail and dots under her wings i thought it was a female. BUT ever since me and my friends watched a funny movie she started making laughing sounds, she imitates my little kiss noises i do to get her to sing, and well, she sings every night, now she started doing it all day, also, today I noticed that she was very vocal and attacking her bell toy with fluffy ropes she usually rubs her head against. One more thing, she has this one distinct whistle she does, she whistles this two note tune and raises her wings into a heart shape at the same time, usually facing her toys. Wait, one other thing, she loves to do the danger shriek [ I recognized it when i first got her, she did it when she was scared or around something new] she does it every weekend at 6 or 7 until i wake up, sometimes even after her bowls were refreshed she’d keep screaming until 10, is it a boy girl or a girl with the rare singing/annoying talent?
she also knows the wolf whistle, its worked into her songs

Best answer:

Answer by tinlizzy
the only sure way to tell if krinkles is a boy or girl is to take him/her tot he avian vet and get a 0 blood test, or wait to see if she lays eggs. all i know is that the bars in the tails are a coloration of a Cinnamon- or a Cinnamon- crossed, or if they haven’t gone through their first real molt. i know that during spring females will defend one corner of the cage if they are interested in laying eggs (my female parakeet reasonably attacked her mate, me, my family members, and the male cockateil for going near the nest box) and males tend to be extremely vocal and scocal to the pointy that they dintt like to be caged at all, but to hitch a ride with youwhenm your going around the house, or watching TV, while females are more likely to want to stay by their cage.
both sexes make great pets, and with training you can teach any bird to accept any new thingwhetherr it be new food, toys or just something new by slowly exposing them to the new thing.
as for the screaming in the morning, krinkle may just be saying “good morning” to you. try opening the blinds and letting krinkle look out the window in the morning. it helps our cockateil calm down :)

I’m having some trouble getting my Cockatiel to eat fruits & veggies ?

Question by The Intrepid Elite: I’m having some trouble getting my Cockatiel to eat fruits & veggies ?
So, I’ve had my Cockatiel, Piper, for about two to three weeks now.. She’s friendly, cuddly, and as personable as it gets. She’s out of her cage ninety percent of the day, and is only put away when we need to go somewhere or when it’s time to go to bed. She’s always supervised, by the way. I’m no dummy. :]

My question is.. she eats Cockatiel formula food that has seeds, etc, whatnot in it, has cuttlefish (the flaky, oval-shaped block of.. hard-to-describe stuff that you hang in their cage?), and LOOOVES millet.. she’ll eat apples occasionally, loves potatoes, loves pasta, loves bread.. but I can’t get her to eat any fruits or vegetables ! I just offered her a grape, but she refused it. She doesn’t even try it ! She’s two years old, by the way, so I don’t know if her young age plays a part in it or not. How do I go about getting her to eat, or at least try, new fruits and veggies ?
By the way, I’ve tried to feed her broccoli, tangerines, clementines, peas, and most recently, grapes. I forgot to mention that she’s okay with peas, but it’s like apples: she’ll only eat them occasionally. All of my other attempts to feed her the aforementioned foods have failed miserably.

As she doesn’t seem to like them, try introducing them another time. My Cockatiel loves Cabbage, Cucumber, Lettuce, Banana, Apple, I also give my Cockatiel dried mixed fruit which you can get in a pack from ‘Pets at Home’. I pour some into a seperate bowl, or you can add some to its food.
