whats wrong with my cockateil? or is he normal?
Question by queencutie4evr: whats wrong with my cockateil? or is he normal?
I just got a cockateil and i’m assuming he’s not an adult yet because the feathers on his head are pretty short and his wings are really small too. I’m worried about him because on each of his wings there’s a little spot that’s not covered with feathers and it’s the same spot on both. Is it because he’s still a baby and they havent grown yet or do you think he was attacked by a another bird or human. he was also terrified of us when we first got him and wouldn’t eat but now that he’s gotten used to his cage he seems a lot better but he does tend to start shivering at times and i don’t think it’s because he’s cold. Also what would be the best thing to feed him? I give him seed mix and grapes at times.
Thanks please help =)
also is it a male or a female? its wings are grey and white and its head is a yellow greenish color with orange on its cheeks. there are stripes under its wings and under its tail. is it also normal for him to put his beak in between his wings when he sleeps

plzz call the vet to check i don’t know much about bird but i am going to tell you what i know.the spots might just be birth marks or he just has been atacked by something. if he seems fine then don’t worry about it

I need real feedback on whether or not i should get a small pet?
Question by xshadow: I need real feedback on whether or not i should get a small pet?
i am 18. i’ve been wanting to get a small pet for over a year now, preferably 2 rats or maybe a cockatiel(haven’t decided yet). i’ve done tons of research on both these animals, yesterday my mom said that i can get a pet, but i am suddenly hesitant because im worried they will get tumors or some other health problem and die. plus, the animals cage can’t be in my bedroom(except for when i take them out to play) because my room is always freezing cold, it sometimes gets below 60(i do have a heater in my room but it can’t be turned on 24/7). there is room for the cage in the dining room, but i have a cat who is a killer. my cat would probably be sitting next to the cage all day. i don’t want my rats, or cockatiel, or what ever animal i get(if i get any) to be scared & become stressed because of my cat. ive owned pets before. parakeets, a hamster, and guinea pigs. that was before i had a cat though. anyway, if i do get a pet, and if the animal(s) becomes sick, then my mom would have to pay for the vet bill, and though she MIGHT be able to afford it, it will be such a strain on her to spend hundreds of dollars…my mom currently has 2 dogs. her 11 year old cocker spaniel has health problems, so she already pays for his vet bills. my mom currently doesn’t have a job, neither do i…
so, should i get a small pet or should i just wait…? thanks

Cockatiel possibly sick?
Question by mc: Cockatiel possibly sick?
My cockatiel is about 1 year old and recently he has been biting me. He never bites me unless i scare him. He is the friendliest bird usually he is never really in his cage and is usually walking around with me throughout the house. He is potty trained. Lately he is still acting normal except the constant biting, his poop is green but the urine around it is cloudy, and he is not pooping on his newspapers anymore. My doctor had prescribed Ditrim Liquid for him a while ago when he hurt his wing from night terrors and i am contemplating giving this to him or not because i have no clue what it is. My guess is some kind of antibiotic. The thing is is that there is no aviary vets anywhere near me the closest one is 2 hours away and i cant make it there because i am in school and have finals all week. If i have to i def will because my bird is like a little human but if this will work i would like to just use this. Any advice?

Any advice? Yes call your vet and ask your question there. That should be the first place to ask a question like that.I have no idea what that med is. My birds never had it prescribed.

I ran out of the bird feed I give him and I won’t be able to get him any until the end of the day, and I don’t want him to starve until then. Should I feed him bread or something until then?

please help me!!! blood all over my cockateil?
Question by !: please help me!!! blood all over my cockateil?
i came home to bring my 2 cockateils inside from the backyard and when i set them down in the light i saw my male cockateil’s left wing missing some feathers and blood running from his wing to the belly.
looking around the cage i saw blood all over. i noticed two feathers on the floor of the cage.
fortunetly both birds were perching around as normal.
i figured that some animal may of attacked them while i was away or he plucked one of those blood feathers ive been hearing about.
either way, im nervous and not sure what to do.
please! if you’re any type of bird expert i need help/advice!! i love my bird and hate to see him like this. (please note i live in Florida and when i came to get my birds it was night time around 9:00)

Distracting my pet cockatiel?
Question by PrincessJinx: Distracting my pet cockatiel?
My pet cockatiel is a biter, So I was trying something different and I just wanted opinions on if this is a good idea. He is usually stubborn when I ask him to step up to take him out of the cage and bites me, but I started holding something else out for him to bite and he does and steps up much easier. I also just randomly hold it out for him and most of the time he spends with me he is happily biting at his toy. If I put the toy down he goes and gets it. I figure its not a solution but its better than him biting me. Opinions?

Answer by Hannah
I think that’s a good idea. My friend always wears a necklace so that her birds can bite it. Maybe you can try to ween him off it after a while

How did my 2-year-old parakeet die?
Question by Lyd (:: How did my 2-year-old parakeet die?
On New Year’s Morning (a great morning to discover this) I found my parakeet Henry dead at the bottom of his cage. My family and I have had him for about two years since he was a few-month-older, and it was hard to see him like this, (he always looked like a little baby to us.)
But, now we also have a 6-9-month-old cockatiel. She’s on the other side of the room from where he used to be as I type this, and I’m really worried about her health after Henry’s sudden death. I’m planning on going to an avian vet to get her checked out as soon as we all possibly can, (which, unfortunately, won’t be for at least a few more days; we aren’t exactly centrally located to an actual avian clinic; everything we’ve been to handles solely cats and dogs), especially because she’s so young and her immune system can be susceptible to anything, especially compared to a 2-year-old.
About a week and a half to two weeks before Henry died, my mom and I decided to relocate him to a nicer part of our living room, which was a little bit higher than where he used to be. What we didn’t realize is that my dad had recently been tinkering with the heating vent nearby; the vent was exposed for a short time and was blowing hot air at him for the four days he stayed up there. I have to admit that sometimes we can forget to keep a keen eye on him, (at the time we were remodeling the house as well), and he didn’t get a good food-and-water change for at least a day and a half. When we found time to check on him, his water was completely bone dry, and the husks from his food dish were strewn all over his equally distressed cage. Shocked, we took him down immediately and put him back in his original lower place and replenished his water and food supply, but I guess health-wise, we may have been too late. Henry acted really weird after that, almost neurotic; a simple, everyday sound like someone coughing or a light turning on or off seemed to get him extremely agitated. His eyes were a little freaky, too; they constantly seemed to be dilating. Even though he was acting so weird, I figured that he was eating and drinking normally and was responding to contact, (in a flustered way, but I didn’t think much of it at the time), and that he would get over this funk in a week’s time or so, to which my mom agreed, (although as hesitantly as I did.) In the meantime, he was very lethargic, and we attributed it to the exhaustion from not receiving enough food and water for that amount of time.
Bindi – my younger cockatiel – shows a few symptoms like Henry did, although she shows them much, much more mildly. Turning on lights and making sounds does agitate her, but it’s more like a “grumpy cat” reaction, (ruffles up feathers, gives you a “what the heck did you do that for?” look, and goes back to her business.) She eats everything in sight (including the healthy stuff, something that I have to note that Henry never did; Henry was a fruit and treat junkie) and drinks water normally and at a regular basis, (in the meantime, since she’s in the vent area, but just at a lower height, I’ve been dropping small ice cubes in her water to make sure it stays cool enough to keep from drying out.) She gets lethargic as well, but my mom said that she heard from a bird-breeding friend of hers that birds as young as she is often require a lot of naps, so we haven’t paid much concern to that.
Anyway, I just want to know what happened to Henry both as closure to the mystery behind his death and as a reassurance that Bindi won’t have the same fate. Thanks so much if you can help. Like I said, the next opportunity we’ll have to find a clinic to take her to won’t be until at least a few more days, so we would really appreciate some at-home advice as to watching and caring for her until then. Also, as I said before, she is in the area that Henry was when he was near the vent, but she’s at a much lower position, and direct thermal contact between her and the vent is completely blocked by the Christmas tree we still have up, (and the vent is currently covered with the new grate.)

Answer by j m
age can contribute however id would be mu guess that she died from sudden temp changes. from hot to cold and heat blows really hot if youre under the vent,.keep a close eye on the other if it is in the same spot make sure to protect him

Does anyone know how to re-tame my pet cockatiel?
Question by Hazel: Does anyone know how to re-tame my pet cockatiel?
He’s nearly 3 years old and hates fingers, otherwise he is completely tame. He usually hates fingers more when him and our other cockatiel is nesting.
Does any one know how to get him to like f ingers again?
Best answer:
Answer by Christie D
I would first seperate the pair into two different cages, they are more bonded to each other than you. Keep the cages in the same room and allow them play time together, but not living together or nesting.
Start with step one. Get him used to you, offer treats with your hands/fingers. Be patient and don’t give up, it will be like training him in the beginning.
